Howdy! I'm making an LT game with a new magic triangle!

Hey everybody, I suppose I’ve got to introduce myself in order to post screenshots and downloads for my WIP game FE Quintessence. So! For some background on the influences for my game,

  • FE9 was my first, and I still remember feeling so hyped when Ike stood up for Elincia to Sanaki, and then FINALLY getting his promotion after the slog of Ch7. So freaking cool! :triumph: FE9/10 are probably my favorites overall (loved switching armies in 10!), but 3H is a great contender. Fates has gotten my most replays in recent years simply due to the variety with routes and kid units (if only the story wasn’t :poop:)
  • Branching classes and reclassing are top tier game design elements for me, and those will be a major part of my game. Plus, I hope folks will like my new classes and tweaks to existing ones (be on the lookout for templars, miners, and shapeshifters!)
  • And now in 2025 there’s so much community building and sharing assets, it makes being creative much less daunting. For some of my more…out there classes and spells, I might be working on animations for quite some time.
  • You can view my game thread (still can’t post links…) for more on the new magic triangle and story elements that are interwoven with it. But TLDR is Mind (Erudite) > Body (Primal) > Soul (Spirit).

Now here’s a question–what are YOU looking for in a hack/fan game? Curious to hear about the zeitgeist these days!

Be welcome here. What I’m looking for in a hack/fan game hmmm
I guess that the game is fun be it more regular in gameplay to gba fe or having skills or other unique features. I’m not big on over complicated systems and skills . Imo for me important is a good selection of music and different things of a character should match as best as possible. Portraits and battle sprites colours. Always a + is unique assets be it portraits, music, animation yadda yadda which I woulld say portraits are probably the most important thing. Hard to grow attached to a main character who is eirika with green hair as example hah.
Another thing important for me is consistency , if one makes new magic animation they should fit with how other animations look (i know making good magic animation is difficult)

I’m gonna rember that next time i’m making a unit for a PME(and don’t have a fresh splice ready)

Ha! What is a PME? I know it’s wrong, but I can only think of Paper Mario Emblem (which, let’s be real, would be dope!)

I’m also a big fan of music that works well. Right now I’m pulling from the Tales of series, Hollow Knight, and Triangle Strategy, but I may very well pull from Octopath Traveler, Divinity, BG3, etc in the future.

Since this is a hobby project I’m not giving myself a hard deadline, so basically I’ll keep working on the art until I’m satisfied (which, having heard from other creators, you’re never really “done”, you just have to choose to drop it). I haven’t even locked in my main character’s looks, so we’ll see where that takes me.

As for the magic animations, it’s going to be interesting differentiating my holy/spirit spells from the erudite/arcane/light spells. There are some laser-type anims already in the repo so that vibe can work for erudite (plus, as mentioned in the game thread, inspo from the magic schools of Dark Souls/Elden Ring). I’ll probably keep the current light spell anims for spirit.

Also, I just love that there’s a place with tons of other people who nerd out and theory-craft stories and game mechanics. My people! hah

PME stands for Pick My Edits
Basically, someone replaces the units in a game with submissions from people. They determine the character, stats, etc. Basically like creating an OC. Sometimes, the story changes as well based on the characters.

tales of series? well now you got my interest
hope you are allowed to put links soon.

Oh gotcha, they’ve been doing that with Embrace of the Fog, another LT game.

ToS is my favorite game of all time, despite newer ones having better combat/graphics etc. Dat nostalgia!

Howdy! What I’m looking for… Well, there should be at least one gameplay thing your hack does so well, it’s notable for that alone, whether it’s a completely new idea or an iteration on something that came before.

Personally I loved how Fire Emblem Fates Conquest Lunatic made Unit-building an interesting long-term question weighed against the cost of investing your limited resources into that unit.

Who do you invest EXP and boosters into and why? How do you pair units to share Classes and Skills? What do you do with someone like Jacob who can reclass and access promoted skills so early in the game and pass them down to his kid, and to yours if he’s marrying Corrin? What do you do with someone like Laslow who’s surrounded by superior sword options but can give anyone Sol and give Ninja skills to his kid? This unit’s great if you give him this skill, but that requires pairing him with him, but he’d rather be with her to get her skill, and she’s great in her base class but she’d rather be reclassed so she can be promoted and give a better skill to her kid. Everything’s connected.

A boring answer like “pair the two Berserkers together so their kid has more Strength” would be fine in Awakening, but here it comes with a cost. Opportunity cost. Do that and you’re not giving the parents or children the best Skills outside their usual class options like Life And Death, Quick Draw, Sol, Replicate, or the Breaker skills. Make them better at what they were meant to do or reclass them into something completely different. It’s got more going on than Awakening where you make overpowered kids who pair up and beat the game for you. Sure, Fates still has overpowered options like Maid Camilla and Sol Maid Camilla and Vantage Vengeance Life And Death Ophelia, but people are still making videos analyzing the units because there’s a lot here worth thinking about.

Also, you have something tangible to measure a unit’s greatness and the opportunity cost of training them: The ease of capturing and recruiting an enemy to do that. Laslow’s personal skill screams “Rally user” but you can capture a better Rallyman. You can even capture impossible things like Ninjas with the Beastman skill for wounding enemies post-combat AND the Ninja skill that does the same. Guess those particular ninjas are secretly furries.

EXP and Gold is limited, so you need to think about what to spend it on and where to get more. Personally I like pairing Elise and Arthur ASAP for the Gold from their kid’s mission.

I think Engage and 3 Houses completely missed the mark in that area. There’s no real opportunity cost when it comes to making everyone the best possible version of what they can be. Yeah, your Dark Mage can spend time as a Mage to learn Fiendish Blow. Bernadetta doesn’t even have a hard time picking up Vengeance and Stealth to become untargetable by enemies as long as another ally is nearby and capable of killing anything ever in one shot. You don’t need to weaken your combat unit by giving him a crappy low-rank weapon to gain weapon EXP, just train with it outside of combat during menus. Half the damn game is menus. No, 75% of the game is menus. Menus and the accursed Monastery. Breaking the game is so easy, it makes you wonder why the plot makes a bigger deal out of Crests than Engage makes out of the Emblem rings. Don’t get me started on Engage where you can just save up and spend your Primogems to get OP. “Hey man how do I make this unit good?” “Buy Tiki and inherit the skill that buffs growths”.

Jason has posted long ass AI response before so is this AI response too because no one giving you attention? Hmm . Jokes aside ya i read all of it find your comments good and agree this time.

I love reading Terms of Service lol

Dang, shots fired!

Yeah I think my new magic triangle will be what differentiates it from other games, even if I’m reusing concepts/assets from the anima-light-dark triangle. But this is a fan game, not a completely new release and I don’t have time to make 100% new animations lol.

I get your comparison of Conquest vs 3H/Engage on choosing units, though I don’t think I would ever do Lunatic lmao. Also, as much as I love 3H, there is so much time spent prepping in menus. If only I didn’t have to be so meticulous XD

Funny, I was thinking of using AI to shorten this text once I realized how long it was getting.

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest (Lunatic) makes unit-building a long-term strategic puzzle with real opportunity costs. Who gets EXP and boosters? Which pairings maximize skills and class options? Units like Jakob can reclass early and pass down powerful skills, while Laslow, despite being outclassed, offers Sol and Ninja skills.

Unlike Awakening, where you stack strength, Fates forces trade-offs—stronger parents or better skills like Life and Death, Replicate, or Breakers. Limited EXP and Gold mean every decision matters, even recruiting capturable enemies who can outperform your own units.

By contrast, Engage and Three Houses lack these trade-offs. Menus dominate, making optimization trivial. In Engage, just buy Tiki and inherit growth buffs—breaking the game is effortless.

If you think something’s AI, there are apps for checking.
