How To Excel At FEBuilder Without Being Good At It – A Basic Guide To ROMhacking, by Parrhesia

Hi. Have you been looking for an almost 26,000-word long guide on how to work with FEBuilder, screen by screen, through pretty much every relevant step of the way to making your own chapter? One with images – some of them even relevant – and patient stage-by-stage scaffolding, written by someone without particular technical knowledge or the patience for jargon? I really hope so, because otherwise I committed two weekends to this for nothing.

How to Excel At FEBuilder Without Being Good At It – A Basic Guide to ROMhacking

Hey there!

This guide has been super useful so far! I’ve been reading it on and off the last day or so on the train and when I’ve not been busy.

I started mucking about with FE Builder just over a year ago. I’ve taught myself quite a bit, and utilised some videos and guides from here, Discord etc. This guide has been good for teaching the why behind the buttons and actions - like I understand better why stuff happens the way it does, or what the terms means. Terminology has been a big on, actually.

I’m still pouring through it, but I did have some early questions that I haven’t seen answered as of yet.

Early on, there’s a link to the Fire Emblem Fangames Essentials repository. I’d never seen this before. Is this intending to replace the GIThub repo? I note some assets that were on GITHub have seemingly vanished but are now on the essentials website. I’m wondering if they’re going to operate in tandem, or if I ought to borrow any new items (like animations etc) from this new website.

Secondly, your list of recommended patches has been very handy for finding stuff I’d been hoping to find (like displaying HP bars below characters, danger zones etc). If you commit to downloading a patch, is there a way to enable/disable them? For example, I downloaded the danger zone patch, so now I can see the ranges when I press Select; but at the expense of the map appearing. If I decided I wanted the map, is there a way to do that without resorting to just uninstalling the danger zone patch? This point will likely pertain to several other patches too (especially the skills stuff, which I’m still mulling over if I want to commit to).

Thank you for your time! I’m surprised this doesn’t have more comments. As someone comparatively novice at this stage, the document has been very helpful (and I’ve enjoyed most of the humour).

Best Wishes

Glad it’s been useful.

As far as I understand it, the Fangame Essentials website is just the public-facing version of the github, and sucks a lot less to navigate. If anything, I imagine the Github is more likely to contain something the page does not than vice versa. But they’re probably just linked, and I haven’t seen anything missing from the Essentials site that I can recall.

The minimap appears when you hit Start, and the danger zone patch shouldn’t affect this. I can bring it up just fine on any custom campaign I can think of. Usually, you have to uninstall patches, but avoid this where you can. It’s one of those things where it’s fine 99% of the time but something can get caught on something else.
