I’ve been a Fire Emblem fan for decades. I recently stumbled onto this place while Googling for more info about ActualLizard’s SRPG contest from back in May, and boy am I glad I did. I recently released a game, Together in Battle, inspired by some of the deeply cool shit I saw this community (and others like it) doing with GBA FE randomizers. Anyway, that’s me. I hope to get to know some of you better!
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance! Sadly, I think it still represents a high-water mark for the series in terms of consistently managing good mechanics, good map design, and good writing all at once.
*coughs in “Who’s fucking idea was it to make the character who the first thing you’re told about them as they show on screen is ‘Watch Out For Lady Rhea’ NOT an unsubtle church-is-evil twist villain” Fire Emblem Three Houses*
I mean…isn’t she, though? She kidnaps you as a baby, cuts out your heart, and replaces it with her mom’s in an attempt to resurrect her. In the meantime, she’s gaslit the entire continent into a cult of worshipping Seiros without ever revealing that she is Seiros; she maintains a nationwide system of quasi-racism based on immutable, inherited traits; and she summarily executes members of a splinter denomination from her own religion for nothing more than theft of property. (It’s not exactly presented as a twist that the church is evil, though–the game just kind of shows you what they do and expects you to draw the corresponding conclusion yourself.)
Exactly, and the writers just act like she isn’t and Edelgard’s the real villain, except when they act like “oh no actually it’s The Mole People” except when THEY AREN’T EVEN FUCKING IMPORTANT god 3h is such a mess.
Nice to see you here! Still rocking the image as pfp from your games some 10-15 years later.
For anyone who hasn’t tried yet I suggest looking up Telepath RPG 2. There’s some jank by this point but its a free SRPG (browser, maybe need flashpoint now?) that of note has no hit chances.
Various of his other games have demos too.
…unless it’s Crimson Flower, and then they’re like “j/k actually she is the villain–but only because she personally hates you now.” Yeah, I get it. 3H would definitely be better if TWSitD weren’t part of the game and we had to contend with different factions fighting purely based on their clashing ideals and interests. It’s been sad to see IS’s writing team get more and more enamored with hackneyed, cheap devices to absolve characters of responsibility for their choices
Even In Crimson Flower when you try to go “yeah no she’s right and I have Literally Zero Reason To Trust Rhea Ever”- even when you’re SIDING WITH HER- they try to make Edelgard the villain instead until literally the last chapter it Sucks.
Personally, I think Rhea should’ve just been straightforwardly a “the church is evil” twist villain, or the whole thing should’ve been looking at the nabateans and agarthans and going “IT’S BEEN 1000 YEARS GET THE FUCK OVER IT ALREADY” with some kind of moving on from the past theming.
