It would be cool if you did Ophelia next
Ophelia will eventually be done, but it is not this day. I’m thinking I’ll do first gen Fates first, so you get the other female dark mage from Nohr first.
Not going to lie the task that lies ahead looks daunting still. However I believe with projects such as these, you just need to take it step by step and suddenly things don’t look so hard. Although I’m definitely not recreating my pace from last year where I managed to sprite 100 portraits in a year. This year I’ve only done about 80 (not all of them are public).
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Nyx)
FE 14 Fates - Nyx
Another challenging portrait for the fact of having a transparent veil. I originally made her taller which looked odd which is why she has bits of hair sticking out from below (as they used to be connected to the main sprite, from when she was taller). However with some palette pre planning it ended up working out. She’s probably not easily re-colourable because her hair’s mid tone is the darkest skin tone. Ironically I think the hardest thing to draw for this ended up being her headdress/circlet thing. I did the veil second, so that is why there is a veil-less alt as well.
Another Fates character with some crazy hair volume, although this one is from Hoshido, instead of Nohr. However the next character will be a Nohrian male. You know there are a total of 71 playable characters (including both sexes of Corrin and Kana, but not the Smash amiibos (Lucina, Marth, Ike, Robin)). Then if you include the capturable bosses thats another 13 for 84 playables. As of this post I’ve only done 13, so thats 71 playable characters left to go.
Maybe I should make it a guessing game for the forum of who is getting done next, or have some teaser silhouettes like how FEH does hero teasers.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Azama)
FE 14 Fates - Azama
Alright here is the next Hoshidan. You know when I think about the Hoshidan retainers, Hinoka really got shafted here. Like she chose Azama and Setsuna… Anyway, about this Azama sprite, on one hand, eyes shut means no blink frames. On the other hand, that hairstyle, something is in Hoshido waters that give some of them some crazy volume in their hair (Ryoma, Azama, Sumeragi, Takumi (no ponytail), Shura). I’m actually really happy with how the hair and face turned out though, even though they were aspects I was most worried about. His shirt and over apron thing on the other hand are probably the things I would rework if I were to revisit this one.
If we guessing, I’m going for Niles
Unfortunately, that was an incorrect guess. It would be probably hard to make more hints onto who is next, but I’ll throw some out there anyway. I thought about the silhouette thing but if I got up to that point where I’ve completed my line art to give a silhouette, I might as well keep going on working on the sprite instead.
You know when I first saw Keaton and Kaden, their designs didn’t imply to me that they were the leaders of their respective groups. They don’t really exude the same aura that the Laguz Royals (both the kings/queens and their princes) do. I thought they were going to be kinda like your rank and file in the hierarchy (like Lethe and Mordecai).
As far as fur and furry characteristics go, Keaton wasn’t too hard to draw. I usually struggle with fur and feather. Anyway the next character I’m going to sprite is a female first gen Nohrian.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Keaton)
FE 14 Fates - Keaton
The leader of the wolfskins, Keaton. I think not including Final form Anankos and the other forms of Garon (Goo and Dragon). I think Keaton is probably the hardest of the transforming characters to draw, mainly because of his pose and again insane hair. Kaden and Selkie have easier haircuts to manage (maybe its a kitsune thing) and Velouria wears a hood. However I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out. I got a bit lazy and didnt add the buckle thing he has on his sleeves, but when I was looking at some references, it looked inconsistent between them on whether or not his sleeves had buckles. I ended up with 3 spare tones on him, so I guess if you’re willing to keep the pose, he is probably easy to splice/recolour with.
hhhhaaaaiiir
Nice, another portrait right after the others! Keep it up!
Hella nice!
(Blonde Gold Digger next?)
More Nohrian hair volume. Thankfully this character is not a gold digger, but instead a bit of a klutz and lethal chef. You know looking over Kozaki’s Fates designs, there is actually a lot of characters with a lot of hair volume, (they’ve also done a lot of bald characters… (but that is besides the point)), and working out how to fit them all into the hackboxes is one of the challenges of Kozaki’s character designs, that and the wacky or intense armour designs.
With this one, thats 15 playable characters done, 69 to go (nice). The next character I’m going to sprite is a muscular gen 1 Hoshidan.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Felicia)
FE 14 Fates - Felicia
At first I thought her design was going to be simple, but I think I got used to seeing her in FEH more so than in Fates. Her ponytail has a huge amount of volume in Fates, whereas in FEH its a bit thinner. The sheer size of her hair makes her head look big, but its actually pretty standard size. I think I could of gotten away with using one less black tone and either using it for white or another blue tone, but I’m not fussed with how it turned out. If I were to revisit this one, I’d maybe play around with hair colours more again, because I spent the longest there trying to come up with a colour I was happy with.
I’m guessing Fuga.
Not quite Fuga yet. Although going by the description, you other candidates were Hinata and Rinkah out of Gen 1, so you were close. Trying to fit all these Kozaki designs into the hackbox is part of the fun, but it does make some of the characters look bigger or taller than I feel they are sometimes.
Next character is going to be a Gen 1 Ranged Nohrian.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Rinkah)
FE 14 Fates - Rinkah
So Rinkah was one of my favourite characters to use from Birthright, just because her class tree was unique to her unless you friendship/partner sealed someone with her. Her looks make her look like she should be the Hoshidan equivalent to a berserker, but I think from memory in the end her class is better suited as a Hoshidan Knight equivalent (physical tank). She has an interesting design to me and gives off a brigand berserker vibe. Unfortunately her orb necklace covers up a lot of the toning I did on her to make her look more muscular in around her neck and collar. I wish I had maybe one more tone to use rather than the dark brown for the orbs to make them look a bit more black, but she had a surprisingly high colour requirement with the Oni Mask and Oni red hair attachment.
Remember that you can take advantage of the Hackbox expansion patch to make portraits a little bigger, wether it be horizontally or vertically. Like I suggested you do with Walhart a while back.
Yeah I did do an alternative version of Walhart with the extensions, however I do prefer to keep almost all mugs I do within the confines of the base hackbox limitations. It makes them more compatible this way, so its easier to configure for hackers or splicers. It also means I’m not relying on extensions to add height variance amongst the cast or can save it for when it really matters.
Another thing I find is that the limitations of the hackbox help force creativity out and also makes the challenge a bit of fun too.
Next up, a gen 1 Hoshidan Retainer.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Flora)
FE 14 Fates - Flora
So I decided to do Flora after doing Felicia recently and was looking over their portraits. I feel like they very much are more twin like in the face than some other twins in Fire Emblem, at least more than some other twins surprisingly. So this made this one easy as I used Felicia as a basis, changed their colours (they have opposing colours for their hair and gems) and with some very slight adjustments to the face and a different haircut. To be honest, the fact that it was going to be an easy sprite was the main reason I decided to do this one while Felicia was somewhat hot off the press.
Woooooo yeah best Maid yeah wooooooooo
It gotta be Saizo, right?
Funny how I also recently did two portraits that are basically lookalikes since I used the portrait of one of them to make the other. The difference is that instead of being twin siblings they’re grandfather and grandson.
You’ll see who they are… Tomorrow…
Good guess on the Saizo, he was kinda fun to do. Is Fates the first Fire Emblem to not do the regular Christmas colour cavaliers? I know they replace them with Kaze and Saizo your Christmas colour ninjas instead. The only games pre Fates that I’m not familiar with their cast are the Jugdral saga games (Geneology and Thracia), but I know of Alec and Noish so FE 4 has Christmas cavaliers. Post Fates, Three Houses doesn’t really have Christmas cavaliers and I don’t think the Black Eagles even have 2 designated cavaliers in their class (BL, get Ingrid and Sylvain, YD get Leonie and Lorenz, BL have Ferdinand and ??) and Engage sorta has Framme and Clanne.
Next up is a gen 1 Nohrian male.
I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE 14 - Saizo)
FE 14 Fates - Saizo
So Saizo is like Owain in that their pose is a fair bit different from standard Fire Emblem poses. This means their face angle and shading is usually the opposite of most portraits, although for standard Saizo, its not usually noticeable because of his mask. However I did do his face underneath first, so you get a maskless alt. I feel like my Saizo’s head size ended up much nicer however compared to my other more front facing sprites (usually I use Glenn as a reference, but Glenn’s head is actually quite large like Calleach’s compared to other sprites). I think its because I used Uther’s head as a reference this time and it worked out much nicer. Its funny that he looks kind of young without the mask, but you got to remember him and Kaze are another set of twins in Fates and Kaze pretty young looking. if I were to revisit this one, I’d probably recolour and reshade his clothing a bit.
You mentioned Owain, so I gotta assume it’s time for ODIN DARK
Niles maybe? Or Silas?
Gaiden/SoV’s Mario Bros are mages (Mae and Boey, whose hair was green in one Gaiden illustration) but Gaiden is the weird early experimental entry
