First Impressions: Project Ember

This is my first ever topic and I’d leave a comment on the original topic, but wanted to share my 2 cents about the Fe6 (remake? Reimagining?) called Project Ember.

My background (aka why my whining has relevance) : I’ve beat Fe6 many times - normal, hard mode, reverse recruitment, in Japanese, and other strange ways. I was excited to try out PE for something new. Unfortunately I didn’t end up liking… most of it. Granted I have only got to chapter 8, but that’s about where I wanted to stop and give my first impressions.

Things I like:

• I do like some of the new animations. The armor knight animations have a good amount of heft to ‘em, Paladins and cavaliers look pretty cool. I do think some of the animations are a little lengthy compared to the original, but they’re certainly a lot smoother.

• A few of the redrawn portraits look very nice. Personally I like the Dorothy and Barthe portraits. Very kino.

What I didn’t like: I want to preface all of my criticism by saying that I don’t actually think PE is bad. It’s very clear that a lot of effort went into this, and most of these complaints I have are personal taste. There are however a few things that really put me off the game besides my own feelings.

  • Bows…. good God the bows…. At first, 2-3 bows was very novel and cool. Quickly though it becomes extremely clear that fe6 was NOT designed around every archer having a longbow. A lot of strategies that usually would be safe are now no longer tenable due to the extra range a single archer can cover. Bows in fe6 didn’t really need the buff anyway; this is the only GBA game where they’re good, the big issue is that the archers are crap. I cannot imagine the total nightmare that Chapter 12 will be with these 3 range bows.
  • On top of the Bow being one of the best weapon types now, 1-2 range weapons somehow feel even worse than they did in vanilla! I can tell that the creator was heavily inspired by Fe12 since they have zero might to them…
  • My biggest complaint… the game is insultingly easy. I had Bors killdozer his way through the first 3 maps with little issue on hard mode. Many of the shitter units got massively buffed, which is very fun but also makes everything feel samey. My personal gripe is that Ogier now has 10 con, despite the fact that all of his supports are about the fact that he was too small to join the Ostian Knights, even though he now has the same constitution as Alen. Ambush spawns are removed, which while being very kind to the player, definitely makes a lot of maps a lot easier to pick off reinforcements with much less risk.

I have some other qualms but I think I’ve word vomited enough. Overall the whole thing feels like fe12 inside of fe6, mixed in with some frankly obscene changes to the core game. That’s all I got lol
