Fire Emblem Romhack Idea( Arcane & Ingots)

I’ve been dabbling in this stuff for some time but I think I want to eventually make something of my own. The problem is the ideas I’ve been having are probably way out of my league and contrived as hell.

The main idea I’ve had for the better part of a month is an FE game set in like a industrialization or late exploration age. Basically shit is advancing and you got early firearms and stuff alongside magic. Steampunkesque at times if you could say. A bulk of the enemies early on would be standard lance, axe & all but you get the occasional infantryman or the sharpshot. Right now the contrived plot is somebody from our world ends up in this land but it might change. The working title I thought up was something like “Arcane & Ingots”

I just started up with the lex talionis engine but if anybody would like to help me out if they found the idea interesting. I would appreciate some help with basically all aspects because I’m still basically a novice at this.

its a isekai eh… what if the person from our world dies of a infection 5 chapters in?

cool idea

You may as well just not have it be an isekai at that point. Make them fucking miserable they got separated from their friends. Or just don’t have it be an isekai.

hah but it’d be interesting if the isekai’d character feels bad about missing their friends and the other characters have to help them cope

I think the problem with this idea is that unless you are making your own animations and graphics (god bless you then) then you might face issues with conveying the early-modern/Napoleonic/industrialization vibe in the hack. You say you’d still use FE weapons but the animations attached to them still have much more of a medieval swords and sorcery vibe in my opinion. Same goes with character appearances - you essentially can’t use most of the existing assets or splice from them because of the medieval dresses or armors. You’d have to make your own. If you decide to make it steampunk then this problem is compounded even more, because steampunk is very specific in its vibe, and that vibe isn’t present in GBA Emblem. If I see a GBA cavalier running around, I can’t really buy the setting as steampunk. You’d need to draw everything yourself.

Worries like that is why that vague idea of a Star Wars hack (after I finish Life of Seiros) remains only a vague idea that I haven’t developed much. If you have a plan for this though, then of course, go ahead.

I was thinking of some stupid meta commentary shenanigans or something where like maybe somebody says. “Look at this magical lance which fires metal, I cant believe this technology exists” then like the main character says “oh shit its a gun” something like that.

Yeah ive been seriously pondering this. My idea was at first ill start the story off in like a less technologically advanced region with sparse appearings of new stuff but as the story progresses I will need to find out how to animate or find somebody who can animate. Untill then its probably placeholder stuff.
Thanks for the insight.

that feels a bit contrived

Yeah when you say it out loud it doesn’t sound as great.

Il probably run some pointers here that I’ve thought about and would appreciate commentary on since the stuff you guys have already said has help my thought process.

  1. Splitting guns into two separate profincies such as light gun for sidearms and heavy guns for serious shit like muskets. This allows for some intricacy in unit design and I know I can do this because I saw Lex has an option for weapon class editor. The main idea I saw going around is that they are longer range than bows but they cant fire diagonally which is a strange balancing idea but it could work. Guns also would exist as like an item and then the ammution is the stuff that loses durability. You can have like specific types of ammunition or if that’s too contrived then just a different type of gun like how you have killer axes, halberds, hammers, etc as different things for axe users.

2.Ive already thought up a few classes like an engineer, infantryman, sharpshooter or a criminal which can fit in somewhat with the setting but for an accurate like amalgamation of whatever the hell the setting is. I would say its like napoleonic era in the high tech areas because then you get those fancy uniformed enemies and then just lumping that concept in with FE magic. There’s a game trailer I saw on roblox(yeah roblox) which was called muskets or magic something like that which is somewhat similar to my idea. The general idea I was saying earlier is as you get further away from the capital or the tech hub or whatever you get more generalised FE stuff like the soldiers or the cavs.

  1. Less of a presence of stuff like pegasus and wyverns probably. The won’t be gone completely but its probably going to be some in world explanation about how with industrialization they have had their conditions to survive decreased. Probably need to explain it more.

I know Pirate Project has guns so you can check how they did it there.

An option is to simply… not have battle animations, actually. Which kinda sucks, but is at least viable, and then you only need to deal with map sprites, character portraits and maybe maps themselves, which is a lot more feasible.

I just checked the video they have on the FE universe channel and its no anims for the muskets. Since they are going to be an essential part ill probably sit down and learn how to do animation for GBA. But for an early stage ill probably make it basic.

guns would be relatively easy to animate as its point and aim… what if guns had high weight to simulate reload times?
