Fire Emblem Name Origins

Karel /ˈkɑːrəl/ is a given name in Dutch and Czech, equivalent to Charles, meaning Free Man.

This name is a variant of the Germanic name ‘Karl’, which is the root of names like Charles. The word ‘carl’ in Middle English meant ‘man’, often a low-class man or ‘churl’; it was used as an insult during the early Middle Ages in England.

This name might refer to Charlemagne (English: Charles the Great, German: Karl der Große), the famous king of the Franks and founder of the Holy Roman Empire, which makes him the founder of France and Germany.

Another possible person to refer to is Charles Martel (German: Karl Martell), who was the (in the end winning) leading commander of the Christian Forces at the battle of Tours, October 732. If the Armies of the united North African tribes would have defeated Martel’s army at Tours, it is quite possible that the main religion of France, Spain, Switzerland and the western parts of Germany und Italy would have been Islam until today.

Lloyd means ‘grey’ in Welsh. His brother Linus’s name also means ‘grey.’ Perhaps this alludes to the fact that the brothers are neither “good” nor “evil,” but add shades of gray to the game’s story. Reed is a variant of the English name ‘Reid’ meaning ‘red’.

Camus is a Basque surname. In folklore, Camus was a Scandinavian general who fought the Scots at the Battle of Barry. The name Camus derives from ‘Camuston’, the location of the Camus Cross.

Of the fan translated names for his Gaiden appearance, “Sieg” means victory and “Zeke” is the short form of the name Ezekiel (“God will strengthen”), a prophet from the Bible.

Sirius is the most prominent star of the greater dog constellation, Canis Major, and is the brightest star in the Earth’s sky (excluding the Sun). Its name comes from the Greek word Seirios (“scorcher”).

In Greek mythology Echidna was a female monster who spawned in a cave and mothered every major horrible monster in the myths. “Echidna” also refers to a species of monotreme native to Australia, noted for the thick wave of spines on its back.

Sigurd, also known as Siegfried, is a hero of Norse mythology.

Sigurd is also the name of the hero in the Norse Völsunga saga. The hero Sigurd was told by his foster father Regin to go and recover some gold guarded by the dragon Fafnir. After he killed the dragon, he drank some of its blood and gained the ability to speak with birds. This can be compared with how the crusaders made blood rites with the dragons at the Miracle of Darna.

The name Seliph may come from Seraph, a type of celestial or heavenly being in the Abrahamic religions.

The romanization of Seliph’s Japanese name, Celice, can also be read as ‘celes’, the first five letters in the word ‘celestial’. The literal translation of Seliph’s Japanese name, Celis, is the name of a small town in the Cantanbria province in Spain, formed after the fall of the Roman Empire, by the Celeres warriors and their families

Batta was a classic military term meaning a special allowance made to officers, soldiers, or other public servants during the British Raj. In Japanese, Batta means grasshopper or locust (of superfamily Acridoidea).

Seiros may be derived from Seirios (Σείριος), Greek for “scorching”, and an alternate name for the star Sirius. This connection to Sirius is shared with Sothis. It may derive from the demon Seir from the Ars Goetia, a Prince of Hell who commands 26 legions and can go to any place on Earth within seconds to bring abudance, help find hidden treasures, and more acts, but is not a demon of evil and is indifferent to maliciousness. Sitri and Byleth are also named after Goetian demons, which may symbolize their connection.

Uncertain etymology.

This may be a reach, but the name ‘Canas’ may be a transliteration of the Scottish name ‘Knox,’ which means ‘round hill.’ In medieval Scottish, the ‘k’ and the ‘n’ of the name Knox would both be pronounced as distinct phonemes [k] and [n]. Knoll’s name also means ‘small hill.’ Additionally, ‘canas’ in the Spanish language means ‘grey hairs’ or ‘white hairs’, and in Latin, ‘canas’ means ‘bright’, suggesting the ancient source of his power and a reference to his scholarliness.

“Pent” is Greek for “five”.

The Japanese name, Baatoru , means “hero” in Mongolian.

In Irish Gaeilge, the word “fir” is the word for “men”, the plural for “man”.

In Norse mythology, Regin is the younger brother of Fáfnir and Ótr and has the ability to work with iron, silver, and gold to make beautiful and useful things. He later becomes Sigurd’s foster father and instructs him to kill Fáfnir after he turns into a dragon. Afterwards, Regin instructed Sigurd to cook Fáfnir’s heart and eat it. Sigurd later gained the ability to understand birds but also learned of Regin’s plan to kill him as he was consumed by greed. Before he could react, Sigurd decapitated Regin with Gram, the same sword that killed his brother.

I can see two of them make sense but Fir is a bit far fetched now isn’t it?

I like how Roshea is the one character name that no one knows the origin of. I’m almost inclined to believe it’s just a made-up name.

Can we put fangame characters here too?

Oh I was afraid that you might be overwhelmed by the huge number of request but looks like you can handle it.
I request Ephraim.

@MakoQueenofAdrestia

@KTeknis
