[FE8] Thunder’s Sermon by KingOfThracia (UNIT FORM OPEN!)

Hello!

Decided it’s about time I make an “original” hack instead of a demake. And by original, I mean it’s a hack where everyone on FEU can make unit submissions via Google Form.

This is not a PME, and it will have an entirely original story.

Be sure to read the rules before submitting, and remember to have fun!

I hope this encourages people to try making custom portraits for the project. While repo portraits are allowed, I’d like to see more custom ones than repo ones.

(Submissions are limited to 3 per person. 3 is allowed, but please try and limit to 2, so others may submit characters as well. If this project goes on for a year or so and no one has submitted anything, then go ahead and submit more characters.)

The Rules
Abilities

All characters are allowed to have 1 ability from the Skill System by CirclesEverywhere.

I’m allowing custom abilities if it’s a terrible custom ability, and if it’s pretty easy to make. If you already have it with you, just choose a random ability and submit the custom ability somewhere random, too.

However, this ability MUST be a rather balanced ability, such as Death Blow, Discipline, or Armored Blow.

Also, be sure to check class abilities just to be sure there’s no overlap. Also, most classes will only have abilities such as Canto+ and Crit Boost, with only the occasional class ability.

Ability renaming will ONLY be allowed if no other submitter has chosen the same ability as you.

Unit will survive a lethal attack at 1Hp when above 50% Hp.

Male units within 2 tiles take -2 damage.

-Gentilhomme
Female units within 2 tiles take -2 damage.

-Malefic Aura
Enemy units within 2 tiles take +2 magic damage.

-Voice of Peace
Enemy units within 2 tiles deal -2 damage.

-Drive Stat
+3 to any stat (except mov or con) to all units within 2 tiles.

-Live to Serve
Hp healed with a staff is healed to the healer.

-Lunge
Unit can use “Lunge” command to swap places with the opponent after battle.

-Intimidate
-10 avoid to all enemies within 2 tiles.

-Opportunist
+3 damage when foe cannot counter.

-Trample
+2 damage if foe is infantry.

-Camaraderie
Recover 10% of max Hp if there is a unit within 2 tiles.

-Relief
Recover 10% of max Hp if there are no units within 2 tiles.

+10 hit and avoid if there are no units within 2 tiles.

-Focus
+10 crit if there are no units within 2 tiles.

-Bond
Units within 2 tiles recover 10% of max Hp at the start of every turn.

Adjacent allies take -2 damage and deal +2 damage.

-Expertise
Crit damage is reduced by 50%.

-Fiery Blood
+3 damage if not at full Hp.

-Elbow Room
+10 hit and avoid when on open terrain.

-Natural Cover
-2 damage taken when on terrain with effects.

-Gamble
Use “Gamble” commander to halve hit rate and double crit rate.

-Wind Disciple
+10 hit and avoid when not at max Hp.

-Strong Riposte
+4 damage if foe is attacking.

-Patience
+10 hit and avoid if foe is attacking.

-Quick Riposte
+3 attack speed if foe is attacking.

-Light Weight

Use “Shove” command to Path of Radiance shove an ally.

Skill% chance to decrease enemy weapon durability.

+10 hit and avoid on odd turns.

-Quick Burn
+15 hit and avoid, decreases by 1 every turn.

-Triangle Adept
Triangle bonus is doubled.

-Killing Blow
+15 crit rate when initiating battle.

Unit can steal items.

-Full Metal Body
Unit cannot be affected by stat decreases.

-Liquid Ooze
Unit cannot be drained Hp from.

-Devil’s Curse
Unit has a 31 - luck% chance to have their weapon backfire, but the enemy does too.

-Hex
-15 avoid to adjacent enemies.

-Perfectionist
+15 hit and avoid at max Hp.

-Puissance
+3 damage if strength is higher than opponent’s.

-Battle Veteran
+10 hit and avoid for every 10 levels higher than opponent.

-Loyalty
+2 damage, -2 damage taken when within 2 tiles of Yuuki.

-Infiltrator
+2 damage if there are two or more enemies within 2 tiles.

-Mage Slayer
+10 hit and avoid when fighting a mage.

-Watchful
Unit cannot be stolen from.

ONE Prf weapon is allowed for every character you submit. Whether you want a Prf weapon is entirely optional, as well.

Also, the premise of how this character will obtain the Prf weapon is also up to your discretion, as you’ll see in the Google Form. If you want to go more into this idea, you can wait until the game’s release to get more details on the story of the game.

However, the only downside of submitting a Prf weapon is that it must be balanced, and I will be sole judge as to whether or not your weapon will be balanced. If it isn’t, don’t worry, I’ll just ask that you resubmit your weapon with added balancing.

A Prf weapon costs 200G, as said in the Google Form. If you don’t want it in your starting inventory, It’s 50G.

Your characters will be allowed 3 or fewer items, with a budget of 500G. More will be explained in the Google Form.

(And, yes, there is a very large amount of deflation in currency.)

Growths and Bases

As I’m okay with joke characters, there will be no point buy like PMEs. Instead, just give me an idea of how you want your growths and bases to be, and I’ll do it. Don’t be upset if I don’t get them exactly how you want them.

The Story

A young noble from House Runo named Yuuki, who was given the rank of Commander despite his young age and non-expert skills in battle, solely due to the fact that his father was one of the greatest generals of his time. Yuuki’s first mission is to route a group of bandits in an ancient forest in the Kingdom of Garatu, but things don’t turn out as Yuuki would have liked, and ends up getting trapped in the forest.

Most of the game will take place in the Forest of Death, as the nearby locals call it, with Yuuki trying to route the bandits while trying to find some way to escape the Forest.

If you’d like to make an early game character, it can either be a dweller of the Forest of Death, a bandit from the Ruby Gang, or someone who mistakenly wandered into the forest.

If you’d like to make a late game character, it’s most likely going to be someone from the Kingdom.

By submitting a character and choosing their class line, I’ll decide which class out of the line they’ll have, depending on where they join in the story.

And, just to make clear, once you go into the Forest, there is no going out.

The Forest of Death

People who live in the Forest have adapted to its rapidly changing conditions, with harsh winters and blazing summers. Mostly, it’s made up of people who have accidentally wandered into the Forest, and have realized that they’ll never come out of the Forest. However, some of the people are indigenous to the Forest, and use the mystic art of wild light magic to fend off intruders. The same light magic is practiced by members of the Church, however, the people of the Forest use a different, but similar, kind of it.

The Forest is also home to a group of people who make fun off of killing intruders, called “The Chosen Ones,” for some unknown reason, and lead by a man said to be as powerful as god himself, named Zethadius.

The Kingdom of Garatu

The Kingdom of Garatu is an extremely old and decorated kingdom, with a history of winning many wars, especially under the banner of General Ragan, Lord of House Runo.

The Nobles Houses of Garatu include many, with the more powerful ones being House Runo, which is most powerful of the three ruling houses, House Marato, which is second most powerful, and House Riajin, which lies at least powerful among the three ruling houses. All houses are equally corrupt in some way or the other.

The King, King Clifford, oversees all affairs throughout the Kingdom of Garatu, and reigns as most powerful throughout the large country. Currently, the Kingdom lies at tense relations with the nearby Kingdom of Daronti, but war is very far from the current status of both Kingdoms.

I’m currently in the process of making my first unit, but I have a quick question about the form where it says “File upload here:” What are you looking for? I imagine portrait(s) are needed, but what else would you like to see from submitters?

A) Are there any hard lore restrictions for the backgrounds of characters? For example, could a native of the Forest of Death be from an obscure race? Are certain types of magic only available to certain people?

B) I saw the list of available skills, is there a place that also describes the skill effects?

C) First time making a custom unit for GBA, what are some good resources for making portraits?

For the first one, no, not any hard restrictions. If something doesn’t add up with the story, I’ll try and fix it, with not changing most details, so basically keeping the same character idea.

No, I was debating doing that, it’s normal FE8 Skill System abilities. While I try and make a list, just see if any of the names are something you’d like to have.

I have no idea. I mostly use Piskel (think that’s the name of it) to make handmade splices, allowing for fine details on the face, but I know there’s some splicing tools you can look up on FEU.

Are the Drive skills like Rallies, where they buff a certain stat for nearby allies for one turn?

This can be good for a first timer, but you’ll still have to handle mouth and blinking frames manually, and be careful with the hackbox so nothing gets cut off. Keep track of who’s face you use- you’ll need their original sprite for those. Once you have that and a layer-capable image editor, you can overlay the mid-blink and closed eyes over their original position in a new layer, and some cutting and copying into another new layer should get you frames for your new portrait, but they have to be lined up with the hackbox. For the mouth, I tend to take the hackbox area that contains it, copy the new portrait’s area, overlay it over every mouth frame on a new layer, and then copy the mouth of every original frame onto the new frame, using the nose to anchor it if possible.

Also keep in mind FEGBA has a limit of 16 colors to a portrait.

Oh also, since I’m considering making a Bard
How would this hack handle the double dancer situation, if multiple are submitted? Would only one be implemented as a refresher? Would their availability have to be staggered? Or is that not a problem you’re concerned about?

Bards will be handled like Cerulean Crescent style, with refresh being an option, but not being able to refresh each other.

The starting inventory options were updated to include heavy weapons (FE10 style), daggers (FE10 style), and Reavers (FE6 style). Please go back into the Google Form and change your response if you’d like to edit your staring inventory to include these new weapons.

Are you using a custom skillsys build, or just the default one?

Only 254 skills can be used at a time. To configure which skills are in use, use EngineHacks/SkillSystem/skill_definitions.event. This also doubles as a list of all skills and their effects.

In other words, are you using just that default list of 254, or some of the skills that come with skillsys but aren’t in that list of 254 skills by default?
