I finished the hack, it was incredible, the shift in story was neat, (i still hate you for ch8 and ch24) and overall the difficulty was somewhat challenging but not so painful
Spoilers bc we can never have too much of them
My dumb ass read the pdf wrong and thought that the mercenary you pay in 21x is the one you recruit, but that made the plot twist all the more surprising lmao
Anyway, glad you enjoyed the hack! Despite my many evils.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's a spoiler!
For a while I considered flat out lying in the guide. But I figured if you’re reading the guide in the first place, you’re probably trying not to get screwed like that in the first place.
Either way, as evil as it may sound, I’m glad your confusion made the betrayal catch you off-guard. Out of curiosity, which did you want to recruit? And, of course, which one did you end up with.
Nope. They’re just part of
Slight spoilers
the multi-layered troll that is Rennac in this hack.
Feel free to throw them away or sell them for peanuts.
So I’ve seen a few people being very vocal about the -checks hack description at top of the page- major story changes starting from chapter 8. I had no idea what they were talking about.
And then I did chapter 8 last night.
That… was an experience. The twist came out of nowhere but didn’t feel awkwardly shoehorned in, the music accompanying the scene was wonderfully chosen, and the whole chapter (and interlude) really helped hammer in the fact that you actually went through with that and didn’t (spoilers below)
Summary
pull a fast one on us and be like ‘JK, he didn’t actually die. They got the healers to him just in time at the end of the chapter.’ Welp, now I know why your rewrite is called ‘The Princess’s Lament.’
More than anything else, I am loving all the reactions to that moment. I always get the biggest evil grin in my face when I see one. Makes all those weeks I spent rewriting the entire game around this singular change all worth it. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, mind. As I said in the OP, I had a blast making this hack!
I can only hope you continue to enjoy the fanfic. Do let me know if any more events in the hack have a… similar effect.
And you’d be right to do so! I can’t claim to be an author, but I like to think that I’d get a similar kick from watching people reach (and react) pivotal moments like that.
I played through the first 3 or so maps of your hack. Here are my thoughts on them.
Misc thoughts
Kinda weird that male and female fighters use different anime. Also kinda aesthetically dissonant. Either switch males to using the Tellius style or females to match the males.
Minor nitpick, but in my opinion, the vision quest style Modular mini-mug box is better since it also shows res and defense.
Yet another minor nitpick, but if you’re going to make most of the UI green, maybe change the default menu color to green as well?
There should be a patch that can be applied if you would like to only have a unit’s currently acquired weapon ranks, instead of all of the physical or magical weapon ranks. [GOLD INSERT PATCH NAME LATER YOU LAZY FUCK]
Please add the action after support, talk, trade, etc. patches. It adds nothing but ease of play to players. I promise you it doesn’t make the game easier or much different at all.
Same thing with the fighters, why do Male Cavaliers use vanilla or vanilla styled anims, but female cavaliers use SALVAGED anims? Unify them.(in my opinion to both use SALVAGED)
Prologue
OH MY GOD NO DISTANT ROADS, BLESS YOU.
I see no point in not just making Seth’s prf unbreakable; if it’s just meant for chipping and weighs him down to 0 AS.
I do quite like what you did to the prologue. Turning a boring map into a slightly more interesting one by a change of some small things. Good job.
Chapter 1
Still no Distant Roads, yessss.
To further add on to the Crimson Javelin’s utility, I would suggest changing it to be incapable of missing and critting; just to make it some guaranteed chip damage.
Armor knights only have 4 move. Sorry but no, this is not something I like. What I do like however, is Gilliam having bows, it kind of makes up for the lack of 5 move by giving him 1 more range at all times. Pretty cool.
Franz is a sword cav? Cool. I’m guessing Forde and Kyle will be mono-weapon cavs as well? Are the mono-weapons player only classes, or will they be on enemies too?
Nothing to say other than the fact that Franz being incapable of damaging Breguet is a bit annoying, but basically doesn’t matter.
Chapter 2
Ooh. The first case of major rewrites. Fado possibly surviving is cool!(I won’t be making many more comments on story changes unless they really catch my interest)
The changes to slim weapons are neat.
Moulder joining with more base speed than most of my army is really funny. Nothing really to add, just an observation.
Giving Garcia a palette that more accurately represents his portraits colors? Neat.
Not having a boss convo between Ross and Bone or Garcia and Bone feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.
Thats all I have for now, I’ll probably share thoughts on the other maps as I play through them.
Hi, on Chapter 9 (Distant Blade), what is the recommended way to get to all villages on time? I’m having extreme difficulty with this. The surrounding enemies are too strong for me to fight through, and I’m guaranteed to lose at least one unit in a suicide rush to reach the villages unless I save scum, and there’s no fun in that.
Summary
Normally, I’d have Seth lead the charge to the villages, but somebody ensured that wasn’t an option
Question about the secret character’s recruitment;
Summary
Just to clarify, it’s a hard requirement that Amelia is promoted to General, right? Like if I make her a halberdier or something I won’t be able to get the secret character? My go to path for her is always Halberdier, but if general is needed to get the secret character, then that’s what I’ll do.
Kinda weird that male and female fighters use different anime. Also kinda aesthetically dissonant. Either switch males to using the Tellius style or females to match the males.
The inconsistent fighter animations are because the female fighter animation was picked based on the playable female fighter. Maybe I should get a more standard fem fighter anim and let her alone retain the Tellius fighter.
Cavaliers don’t use salvaged animations though, it’s only the map sprite.
Minor nitpick, but in my opinion, the vision quest style Modular mini-mug box is better since it also shows res and defense.
That’s the one that alternates between offensive and defensive stats every few secs, right? I found it to be a bit too busy and ugly for my liking, and I hated the whole “blinking between stats” solution. It’s just personal taste. All I wanted was a simpler box that would let me see enemy items at a glance. Anything else was unimportant for me.
I kinda don’t want to change the mini-mug box now, that specific patch gave me some trouble.
Yet another minor nitpick, but if you’re going to make most of the UI green, maybe change the default menu color to green as well?
I don’t know how to do that. Easily, at least. Inexperience at work, I suppose.
There should be a patch that can be applied if you would like to only have a unit’s currently acquired weapon ranks, instead of all of the physical or magical weapon ranks. [GOLD INSERT PATCH NAME LATER YOU LAZY FUCK]
Ehh I don’t think that’s necessary. I don’t have any hybrid classes in my hack.
Please add the action after support, talk, trade, etc. patches. It adds nothing but ease of play to players. I promise you it doesn’t make the game easier or much different at all.
That’s a good point though. I may have to add this one.
OH MY GOD NO DISTANT ROADS, BLESS YOU.
I generally enjoy Sacred Stones’s soundtrack, but this? Nails on a chalkboard. Expect to hear it nowhere.
I see no point in not just making Seth’s prf unbreakable; if it’s just meant for chipping and weighs him down to 0 AS.
That’s not a bad point. I may change it. We’ll see.
I do quite like what you did to the prologue. Turning a boring map into a slightly more interesting one by a change of some small things. Good job.
Thanks!
To further add on to the Crimson Javelin’s utility, I would suggest changing it to be incapable of missing and critting; just to make it some guaranteed chip damage.
Well, I’m kinda limited on what I can do. I want no SkillSys code messing with my hack at this stage, but without it I’m not sure I can do this. I tried to make it effectively do all these things, by giving it a high hitrate, no crit and super high weight.
Armor knights only have 4 move. Sorry but no, this is not something I like. What I do like however, is Gilliam having bows, it kind of makes up for the lack of 5 move by giving him 1 more range at all times. Pretty cool.
I find giving armors just plain five move to be a boring way to go about fixing them. Just personal preference. That was my exact thought process when giving them bows, and I did also take away most terrain impairment from them.
I won’t be making many more comments on story changes unless they really catch my interest
Well, we’ll see if that ever changes.
Moulder joining with more base speed than most of my army is really funny. Nothing really to add, just an observation.
I didn’t even realize I did that. Moulder, thy name is Wendell lol
Giving Garcia a palette that more accurately represents his portraits colors? Neat.
I always found it weird how he’s a second blue fighter even though he has like, eight pixels of blue on his portrait. Even in his official art the blue is drowned out by his black pants and brown ornaments. And personally, I think the brown suits him a lot better.
Not having a boss convo between Ross and Bone or Garcia and Bone feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.
Didn’t think of that. You’re right, maybe something could be done there. We’ll see.
I was able to save them all, myself. Send a flier (Tana is guaranteed here) to save the one nearest to Binks while the rest of the army hurries to the other one. You don’t need to reach the village, you just need to distract the pirates.
As a word of advice, the pirate with the master seal does NOT destroy the village. He runs next to it and escapes with his goodie. Perhaps I should add a bit of dialogue to make it clear.
Gahahahaha…
Spoilers
Have Moulder lead the charge lolololololol
I edited it myself to give him a little mustache. It’s not great, since I’m not an animator.
Indeed, if you’re going for the secret character, that’s an absolute requirement. Up to you if you want to do that, on top of sacrificing a character’s life, in order to get an easter egg character.
Since it seems to be a popular request, I changed the kings’ personal animations to be more… kingly. Class is still labelled general though, I really have no room for more proper classes.
Implemented the “action after talk” and “action after support” patches.
Generic female fighters are now GBA style. Elaine is still Tellius style, though.
The crimson eye mogall in chapter 4 no longer charges you. Now it only moves when you enter its range. Hopefully that should make it less infuriating to fight.
Touched up Ephraim’s portrait and Gerik’s ranger palette a little.
If you just set weapon hit to 255, the weapon will display as having – hit, and it will be incapable of missing. There should also be a patch that prevents a weapon from critting.
Drau’s neat. I will admit that he was created out of necessity. When I came up with the idea to make Syrene join earlier, because Syrene is way cool and got done super dirty by vanilla, I decided I needed a replacement for her at the river. At first I thought Hayden, but it’d be weird for the king of a non-destroyed nation to just waltz off to the other side of the continent. So Drau was my solution to the conundrum.
Still, he’s neat. He has an awesome stache. Awesome staches are always great to have.
Just finished this hack last night, and it was overall a good retelling of Sacred Stones to me. Here’s my thoughts down below:
Story (spoilers) '
The change in Chapter 8 - Seth dying - really took me for a loop. I was just waltzing on through the first part of the game, and then Chapter 8 drops, and then Seth dies, and Eirika has a sad face on, and then the prep screen comes up, and I'm like "Wait, did that just happen?", and then I realized that that's why the hack is called "The Princess's Lament".
And overall, it made Eirika’s side of the story more compelling. In the base story of Sacred Stones, I liked Ephraim’s side more (because he’s a badass), but the changes here made me actually like Eirika’s side more. Her arc, going from hopeful in finding her brother, to grieving but fighting on, to being overtaken with hatred and vengeance, to killing Orson, pitying him, and feeling empty - it all came through and was relatable, so kudos to you for that.
And the part where Riev took Eirika’s form was creepy and unsettling, but an excellent touch.
Another thing that stood out to me was the story between Aristobulus and Na’amah
Gameplay (spoilers)
I can't comment much on the difficulty due to playing on Normal mode and your changes being made for Hard mode, but the other parts were pretty good, especially it being your first hack. The new units - many of them felt satisfying to use in the time that I did use them. The portrait quality for many of them felt off for me, but it wasn't a deal breaker, and I adjusted to them in the end.
I have a bit of a gripe with Ephraim being unplayable in 3 chapters towards the end of the game and being promoted to a foot unit, but I do understand your reasoning - the stakes had to be raised somehow after the two armies joined up.
Thanks for a great experience, and I look forward to your next hack, should you decide to make one.
Oh gotcha! I think it looks slightly weird since the Stache is on an orange background but hood work on it regardless! I figured it was a stache though!
I actually like the mini box you’re using, it gives just enough details so I don’t have to keep going into status screens but not enough to never check their stats. I actually like looking at all the enemies stat screens for each map and it’s close enough to vanilla too.
