[FE8] The Princess's Lament - A Sacred Stones rebalance, rewrite, overhaul, expansion extravaganza!

Forgot to mention this in my previous post, but do any characters have an “intended” Tier 2 class for them? I am just curious.

Wow, this thread really exploded while I was gone. Guess it speaks to the quality of your work!
To answer this, honestly, having come back to the game, my slight qualms with the portraits are more directed at only a handful - the vast majority of the portraits are relatively seamless, and I’m finding most of my previous concerns to be a result of “wait, who is this in my Sacred Stones game?”. The only portraits that still stick out are Eirika’s (which is thankfully acknowledged over and over again throughout the game) and Margaret. That being said, I’m not sure how much Eirika’s portrait standing out is a product of the portrait itself, or simply my being used to her original portrait. My response to Margaret’s face, on the other hand, is more a result of the angle, since she’s the only character in the game (other than Dara) who looks directly to the side. Or the fact that she just looks kinda funny… The more I use her, the more okay I am with it. Maybe I’m just recovering from Margaret-prejudice? Those growths have been fun too.

Not really. I didn’t have specific classes in mind for anybody.

Hah, thank you! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, myself. I am quite pleased with this reception.

Yeah, I figured there’d be some whiplash with all the new characters. When one reads “game rebalance etc.”, one expects something more like Project Ember or Wildflower, something that adds like, a playable boss or two as a joke, maybe a couple new characters here and there. Certainly not 27!

As for Margaret… yeah, she’s one of those funny side-facing characters. I will just make a slight correction: Dara’s not the only other one. You’re forgetting Garcia and Ismaire. Either way, I find that people tend not to like these, but… honestly, I’m of the unpopular opinion here. I enjoy the side facing portraits. In fact, I find Ismaire to be straight up gorgeous. One of my favorite designs and portraits in the game, so expressive and full of personality. Always made me sad that it was used on such a minor character.

Nice to hear you’ve been enjoying Marg’s performance as a unit. She’s inspired by Wolf and Sedgar from Shadow Dragon. In fact, she’s… pretty much just them lol. Minus the reclassing. Big growth prepromotes are just plain fun.

I guess you’re right. Technically Dorcas might fall under that bracket as well though.

The save state saves the state which might mean residual flags are written which therefore do not allow normal completion. If loading a .sav produces the same behavior, you can change flags via FEBuilder’s memory debugger.

I’ve been playing the game in 1.6 and ch22 went smoothly, didn’t have problems at all

Yeah, I decided to play through it on hard mode first and it kept 1-shotting my characters. My resetting habits are that I only reset if I lose 3+ characters in a single chapter or a character dies in the chapter you get them. Artur being a magic user (and therefore, presumably, having high resistance) meant he got placed to take the brunt of the magic damage, but these mogalls are ridiculous on hard, to the point that even the normal ones were 1-shotting half my characters. Maybe I just got RNG screwed (or I’m just bad but I don’t see what that would do to the 1-shot situation), but that was a rather frustrating level and the only run I didn’t reset (either due to Erika’s death or one of the two conditions stated above), Ross didn’t make it.

Side note (implied spoilers, but nothing stated):

I’m not using Seth (I don’t use OP Jagens in general just as a playstyle preference, found out later that was beneficial), and his lack of tanking ability really screws the rest of the cast over. I feel like the early game was rebalanced around the idea that he’d be around, and it makes playing without him frustratingly punishing.

Other than that, though, gameplay’s been good and the story’s been interesting.

Bugs!!

Bug 1 - Chapter 27 gets autoskipped mid gameplay when u kill the 1st half of the map before u unlock the doors!!
Edit: i tried usin unlock staff and that fixed it BUT when i killed 1 (female boss) it autoskipped again before i could kill the other boss, Moulder got closer to the boss to heal and it went to cutscene!!

Bug 2 - Chapter 28 freezes when u get the load up of monsters and (a certain dark magician) cutscene after the Hound cutscenes.
Edit: i bypassed it by autokipping with start…

Bug 3 - Chapter 29 Draco zombies use magic but their stat reads STR instead of Mag!!

Bug 4 - Chapter 29 when Gorgon monsters use Shadowshot long range magic and u have animations on the game freeze.

Bug 5 - Chapter 29 part 2 when u just killed Lyon doesnt transition into the beginning of battling the final boss but it gives u cutscenes of it ending and then Bug 6 happens, i think u messed up the order of events.

Bug 6 - Chapter 29 part 2 cutscenes background are all messed up and not showing the final boss, char sprites or map but it does shows the dialogue with faces though and it fixes itself back when u get the cutscenes where Lyon shows how he made the Hound!

Bug 7 - Chapter 29 part 2 just before we can kill the final bosses it autoskip to Epilogue!! damn

1.7 patch (Hard mode) on mGBA

Just finished this Amazing hack, this was one of the best hacks i have ever played and i really hope u give Fe7 and Fe6 the same treatment as this 1 as in Rewrite “what if story”, Rebalance (difficulty was hard but fair), and Overhaul in general with added custom chars, weapons, items etc!!

Its almost too perfect for some1 making hes 1st hack, u just need to fix some bugs here and there.

Thanks for this !

Ps: ill do a 2nd run when all bugs are fixed and this time ill try to get all gaiden chapters and recruitments since i played blind this time!!

Haha, oh dear. I did feel like I might’ve overdone it a bit with that mission. Maybe I’ll give it a look and see if I can lower that mogall’s power somewhat.

Spoilery

I suppose I might’ve made the earlygame more reliant on Seth. I hate OP Jagens myself, in fact I always benched Seth in vanilla, but with the overall higher power of the enemy and his lower speed - plus, y’know… The thing - I’d say he no longer is OP.

Thank you very much!

Oh Christ. That’s a LOT of bugs. How did I get through the endgame without experiencing all of that?

…well, at least some of these might just be “Ruben released a pacth and forgot to remove chapter skips when he was testing” n° 27474626. So that’s fun! I can’t say for certain, though. Will have to check it out after work.

Do you have a save at chapter 27 at least? I believe I have one myself, but it never hurts to have more. The more saves I have, the less chapter skips I have to do for testing and the less chance there is that I forget to remove them!

Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your kind words.

As for whether I’ll tackle 6 or 7… I’m not sure. I kinda would like to do something more original next time. I don’t know when it will be or if it’ll even be a hack at all. We’ll see.

Pretty stupid cuz i forgot i could have given u my file for troubleshoot.

1.8 released

All bugs in JrpgAddict’s previous post are fixed. I think.

  • I’m not sure about bug 1 (chapter 27 ending before it’s supposed to). I changed one thing that I’m pretty sure was wrong, but I haven’t been able to confirm if it works as intended now.
  • Bug 2 (chapter 28 intro freezing) is just plain fixed.
  • Bug 3 (draco zombies’ power stat being labeled as str) is not a bug, vanilla also lists all dragons as having str actually. The label changes when the character has a weapon rank in a magic type.
  • I was not able to replicate bug 4 (chapter 29 crashing when gorgons use shadowshot).
  • Bugs 5 and 6 (final battle being skipped) were the result of me forgetting to remove a testing auto skip. In the final battle. Yeah. The fact that this exact thing has happened like four times now is so incredibly frustrating, I want to punch myself in the nose-- Professional change logs!

Also updated the OP with the following note:

  • I have received multiple reports that, sometimes, waiting with certain units causes the player’s turn to end automatically, regardless of how many units are left to move. I haven’t the faintest clue what could be causing this, it is wildly inconsistent in terms of chapters and units that cause it, and I never experienced it myself. I always play with autoend turns off, which could be the reason this never happened to me. Please try turning autoend turns off if you experience this glitch.

I finished the game now.

What an experience. Easily the best time I’ve had with FE8. So many improvements I wish were in the original game! Really great stuff.

I mentioned it before that I always love seeing them, and they definitely were one of my favorite parts of the game. The new characters’ convos with several of the bosses were definitely my favorites. My favorite has to be Novala’s with Riev. It felt like a reward for training him up. (He deserved better!!!)

Any chance you could send me a full list of new battle conversations you added, or even better just the text from them? If not that’s fine of course! All in all I had an excellent time, thank you for making this hack.

1.9 released

  • A certain battle convo was assigned to the wrong chapter and could not be seen. Fixed now.
  • PLEASE tell me I’ve not created more chapter skips with this patch. Please.

Wow, thanks! That’s some high praise. Much appreciated.

(I like the pfp by the way, Sirius best boy)

Hahaha, well… Let’s not forget, he may’ve been a funny war criminal, but he was still a war criminal.

A part of me was thinking I maybe should pick a less irredeemable bossman for the meme playable boss pick, but the devil on my shoulder wouldn’t stop talking about how entertaining it’d be. And an early unit of my favorite class was just an added bonus.

You know what? Sure! Took me a while, there were more than I remembered, but here they are, compiled in a nice, neat list for you and anybody else who might be interested. And some personal comments here and there for good measure, because it’s always fun to discuss the thought process behind things.

All new or modified battle convos

Obviously MASSIVE spoilers ahead

Harold vs Bandit
Bandit: I knew you’d betray us one day. You never had it in you. Ah, well. Too bad. I’ll shed tears for you over a mug of ale.
Harold: I don’t care what happens. My days of crime are over. I’ll fight for justice, until either the war or my life ends!
Bandit: Oh, you don’t care what happens, do you? Let me tell you what anyway: You will die today, by my hand!
Harold: We’ll see about that. It’s not over till it’s over!

Harriett vs Zonta
Zonta: Traitor! Traitor!!
Harriett: Yeah, yeah. Evil mean girl, that’s me. Ooo. Gimme your best shot, will ya? Try not to die a bore.

Elaine vs Zonta
Zonta: Traitor! Traitor!!
Elaine: I will not lie to you, Zonta. I’ll happily accept that title, if it means I can beat you up!

Einar vs Novala
Einar: I’m surprised you’ve come after me yourself, Novala. You always struck me as a hopeless coward. Then again, that’s probably why you betrayed us, isn’t it?
Novala: My designs are far too complex for a simpleton like you! You will die an ignorant fool! Understanding nothing! Hahahahaha!
Einar: You got that right, Novala. Even if I lived a million years, I doubt I’d be able to comprehend your stupidity!

Novala really was way too much fun to write.

Einar vs Melville
Einar: Y-Yikes!
Melville: SKRRRRREEEEEEEEE!!!
Einar: How in the world did that bumbling idiot tame you…

Eirika vs Tirado
Tirado: …You are here, princess. How positively vexing. You defeated all of my men on you own? No, surely not… They must’ve taken too long, and your allies arrived in time.
No matter. I shall break your dainty little neck myself.
Eirika: Orson. Where is he…?
Tirado: Mm? Please, girl. I will not hear your final words if you speak them in whispers.
Eirika: Orson! Where is Orson!? Where is that traitor hiding!?
Tirado: Oh, my… Such fury. I did not think you had it in you, girl. Alas, I cannot allow you to leave this place alive. You will never be able to avenge your knight. How sad.
But then, it was his mistake. He should have known better. The fool shouldn’t have chosen to serve a spineless doll.
Eirika: …
How dare you insult him… I… I… I’ll kill you with my own hands!

Ephraim vs Tirado
Tirado: What?! Prince Ephraim?! How did you…
Ephraim: You are the commander? Very well. Throw down your weapon. Surrender now and live.
Tirado: Bah… An insignificant blunder. I will fix it myself, here and now!

Amelia vs Soldier
Amelia: You were so nice to me… I don’t want to fight you!
Soldier: But you must. Such is the path you’ve chosen. Come! Show me your newfound power!

Ramón vs Gheb
Gheb: W-What?! The old timer? What in the world are you–
Ramón: Bwahahaha! You could never have hoped to contain me! I am a force of nature! You are a weakling!
Gheb: Idiotic old man… You should have stayed in your cell!

Mia vs Gheb
Gheb: Oh, my… You came back for me, did you? Come, let’s have some fun, you and I… Hehe…
Mia: Sounds positively wonderful. Alas, I think I’d sooner stuff Dad’s monocle down my ear. Now be a dear and cook up, would you? Roasted pork will be a better look for you than commander.
Gheb: Worthless wench! I’ll teach you manners!

Duessel vs Bartholomew
Bartholomew: Duessel! The traitor has returned!
Duessel: …
Bartholomew.
Bartholomew: How many years did we know each other, Duessel? Twenty? Thirty? Maybe more. Alas, it just goes to show you never truly know someone. The great Obsidian, a traitor. Hah! How amusing!
Duessel: …And I’ll wager this makes you so happy. You still hold a grudge, don’t you? You still think the title Obsidian belonged to you. That I stole it from you.
Bartholomew: That’s because you DID, you miserable snake! And now you are going to pay for it!
Duessel: I’m sorry, Bartholomew. I did not want things to end like this. But I cannot allow you to stop the prince.
Bartholomew: Draw your steel! I will prove why I should’ve been given that promotion!

This guy exists because I felt the urge to make a portrait and then I wanted to find a use for it. I suppose he did give Fado a chance to flex some more, so that’s neat. And I always thought no proper boss character made this chapter feel oddly filler-ish.

Eirika vs Aias
Aias: Ah… So here you are. The princess Eirika.
Eirika: Do your worst.
Aias: You’re not quite what I had expected… You’ve fury in your eyes, but…
I suppose it doesn’t matter. I would test the arm that bested Glen.

Salvador vs Pablo:
Pablo: Yahh…!? Salvador! You live still!?
Salvador: I do. I see Klimt has been working hard. Exposing your hideouts to Frelia, one by one… Tell me, before you were forced out of Carcino, did you have time to pack up all your ill-gotten riches? Or did you just lie to this lot of sellswords to buy some time?
Pablo: Come now, boy. There is no need for this hostility! You are a brilliant lad. I am sure you understand. There is no hope for survival if we stand against Grado. We employ different methods, but we both love our nation. We could usher in a new era of prosperity for Carcino!
Salvador: No. Not for Carcino. Only for your filthy pockets! The only one you care about is yourself, Pablo. This is justice for all the innocents you’ve murdered!
Pablo: Grrrr… Foolish whelp! Have it your way, then!

Klimt vs Pablo:
Pablo: Yahh…!? Klimt! You live still!?
Klimt: I’m sorry to be the bearer of such upsetting news. Salvador must’ve been quite the thorn in your side. Anywhere you ran, there he was, with Frelia backing him. And now you run for your life to Jehanna. Poor fool…
Pablo: Bah… There’s no point in trying to sway you. We both know how this ends, Klimt! Unlike you, I have talent with magic! I will burn you to a crisp… Unless you surrender. Yes… The support of the great Klimt would be handy. I am giving you one last chance! Join me or die!
Klimt: We both know the answer to that, as well. Whether I win or lose does not matter. Someone will pierce your black heart, Pablo. Justice will be served for all the lives you’ve stolen!
Pablo: Grrrr… Senile imbecile! Have it your way, then!

Rather than make them variants of each other, I tried to go for a bit of a contrast between these convos, where Pablo and Klimt’s longer history makes them reticent to negotiate, whereas Pablo still believes he can sway the younger, more ambitious Salvador. Perhaps he sees a bit of himself in his younger years in the guy. But Salvador is handsome, meaning he’s too good a guy to listen to Mr. Evil Man over there.

Fado vs Vigarde
Fado: Vigarde. The time has come at last.
Vigarde: …
Fado: Before we begin… I have a question for you. Why did you not kill me? You had no reason to spare my life. In fact, you had every reason to put me down! So why? Why did you not kill me when you could?
Vigarde: …
Fado: …Nothing, eh? You will remain silent, even now. Clearly there is nothing left of my good friend. My greatest friend!
Vigarde: …
…F… d…
…K…ll… m…
Fado: Wha-- Vigarde?! Vigarde!
Vigarde: …

I was a bit worried that this went against the lore, as Vigarde is supposed to be a completely empty husk. But I figured it’d make for a cooler moment if he got some words out, and it set up the explanation for Fado’s survival.

Dara vs Valter
Valter: The old fossil! Hah! How good to see you!
Dara: …Ooh… Who are you? Have we met?
Valter: Do not pretend you don’t remember me! You got lucky last time. You did well, I’ll admit. It was fun, even! But today, your carcass crumbles into dust!
Dara: My… You certainly seem a boisterous one. What’s your name, dear?
Valter: Are you daft, old woman? There is no way you don’t remember me! Stop this idiotic charade!
Dara: …
Ahh, if I’ve forgotten you… You must not have been worth remembering.
Valter: …Heh… Hehehe… Oh, I am going to enjoy this.

I won’t lie, this whole “feeble old woman turns out to be an ultra powerful sorceress OC that saves the once-NPC from his tragic plot death and later all the heroes with her army of magical soldiers” thing is a complete indulgence, but what can I say. It’s my fanfic, and I love me a badass grandma.

Glen vs Valter
Valter: Glen! I see the old hag took good care of you. Where is she? I think I’d rather fight her than you.
Glen: Is that so?
Valter: Hahaha… I know how a fight with you will go. You lost once. You will lose again. The hag, however… That one’s a bag of surprises.
Glen: I’m afraid your opponent shall be me. It’s about time you got what you deserve.
Valter: That’s fine. I’ll enjoy doing this again, Glen. And this time, I will make sure the deed is done. I will rip your chest open and crush your heart!
Glen: Try it, then.

Eirika vs Valter
Valter: …I’ve been waiting for you, Eirika!
Eirika: Who are you?
Valter: Have you forgotten? We met once at Castle Renais. No? Look closely, Eirika. Do you not remember the face of he who will master you?
Eirika: …I’ve no time to waste on the likes of you. I must get to Renais. I must kill the traitor…
Valter: Yes, resist. It’s much more fun for me that way. Come, Eirika. I should like to tame you.

Joshua vs Caellach
Joshua: Caellach.
Caellach: Hey! If it isn’t Joshua. It’s been a long time. Have you been well?
Joshua: I’ve been all right. Still working as a mercenary. When did you get all proper and join the Grado army?
Caellach: Didn’t I tell you? I wasn’t about to waste my life as a nameless soldier. Still, I think back on those days a lot lately… My axe and your sword… The two of us were a deadly pair, eh?
Joshua: …
Caellach: By the way… I know all about you, Joshua. Who you really are I mean. The prince of Jehanna, huh? When did you plan on sharing the wealth, you sneaky dog?
Joshua: Listen… You can’t reduce a nation to loot waiting to be divided. And more importantly, I made a vow to my mother. I’m going to succeed her as ruler of my homeland.
Hey, Caellach… You’re the one who killed my mother, aren’t you?
Caellach: Hey, I didn’t kill her! She ran away!
Joshua: But you intended to kill her, did you not?
Caellach: Yeah… Sorry 'bout that. Things happen, you know? C’mon, Joshua, don’t hate me. This is war. There’s nothing you can do about it. Besides, grudges get in the way of work, right?
Joshua: That’s true. It’s as you say. Listen, Caellach… I’ve got to kill you now. Don’t hold it against me.
Caellach: You arrogant… You haven’t changed a bit! I’ve always wanted to show you who’s better, Joshua. And I’m even stronger than I used to be. I’m gonna wipe that smug look off your face for good!

Ismaire vs Caellach
Caellach: Can it be? Do my eyes deceive me? Could that be the radiant queen Ismaire? No… Surely not. The queen is like a delicate flower. So beautiful, like a blinding ray of sunshine. You are a wretch covered in grime and blood. It hurts to look at you. But then… Has that not always been Jehanna?
Ismaire: The blood that covers me is that which you spilled. The grime is the ashes of the palace you burned.
Caellach: Woulda thought you’d have learned your lesson. But hey, I’m not about to say no to a rematch.
Hey, it hits me I never introduced myself! You want to know your conqueror’s name, queen?
Ismaire: No. I don’t care for it. I will remember you as you are. A vile fiend, less humane than any monster. …One who shall soon be covered in his own blood.
Caellach: Wench… You asked for it!

Speaking of indulgences, Ismaire. Ismaire is alive because I love Ismaire’s design and portrait. I did try to make her difficult to save, at least. Make it feel a bit more earned, somehow.

Lorell vs Pratau
Pratau: You are going to die, Lorell. Don’t worry. It’s not as scary as it sounds. I won’t make you suffer. I’m not a monster. If you’ve any final words, I’ll hear them.
Lorell: I-I’ve no words for you! Avery was a good person! She will be avenged!
Pratau: Good? Give me a break… She was every bit as rotten as the rest of us. Except at least I’m honest about it. She was a dirty hypocrite. How disgraceful…
Lorell: You’re insane… Insane! I-I don’t like violence… I don’t like to kill. But just this once… I know it to be the right thing!
Pratau: You can talk all the big talk you like, but in the end… You’re rotten too, y’know. Look at yourself. So eager to take my head from my shoulders. A wild animal, is what you are.
Not that you’ll be able to do it, mind. I will not fall to the likes of a filthy turncoat like you!

Fun fact: Pratau is a direct referect. Yep, that’s right, I did a Blazer! The only difference is that unlike Blazer’s references, which were to popular things that would be immediately recognizable, Pratau is a reference to a game four people remember, two of which didn’t even like it. But otherwise this is on the same level as the Zoro reference in TLP. I even pulled a line straight from the game!

Vandal Hearts 2 is one of my favorite strategy games, though, and I love the guy in his game, so I just had to do it. He was even going to be Avery’s counterpart at first, but I decided that was going too far, and thus Lorell came into existence. Eh, I think I’m happier this way. Pratau would stand out like a sore thumb, and Lorell is adorable.

Avery vs Pratau
Pratau: You are going to die, Avery. Don’t worry. It’s not as scary as it sounds. I won’t make you suffer. I’m not a monster. If you’ve any final words, I’ll hear them.
Avery: All I have is a blade that cries for your blood! You will pay for killing a pure soul like Lorell!
Pratau: Pure? Give me a break… He was every bit as rotten as the rest of us. Except at least I’m honest about it. He was a dirty hypocrite. How disgraceful…
Avery: …Yes. Keep talking, Pratau. Keep spitting on his memory. It’ll make watching you bleed even more satisfying.

Also, remember what I said about differenciating Pablo’s quotes with his fellow Carcino council members? Yeah… I got lazier here.

Ephraim vs Orson
Orson: Prince Ephraim… You never did know when to quit. Renais is already lost. It’s too late…
Ephraim: Orson… You will leave this place. This is my father’s castle. That is his throne… You’ve no right to be here.
Orson: You can have the throne and the castle. But you will not take the joy my wife and I share.
Ephraim: What? But your wife is…
…! Surely she hasn’t been–

Garcia vs Orson
Garcia: Orson… Do you remember me? We used to serve together, long ago. I remember how happy you were when you met your wife… She passed a year ago, did she not? My condolences
Orson: …
Garcia: Sigh… I cannot say I don’t sympathize with you. When I lost my wife… I, too, was devastated. I felt I’d wasted my time here at the castle… When I should’ve been with her, and with my son. I cursed my liege and my vows for keeping us apart. I would’ve done anything to get her back. If only so I could apologize and say goodbye…
Orson: …
There is a way, Garcia…
Garcia: W-What?! What did you say…?
Orson: …

I once saw someone in a discussion thread at Reddit (I wish I could remember any names at all lol) saying that Orson should’ve gotten a battle convo with Garcia. And, thinking about it… Yeah, it makes sense. Not only did they likely serve together, the parallels between the two are clear, both having once been loyal knights who lost their wives and their unwavering sense of loyalty with them. Only Garcia still had Ross to live for.

Franz vs Orson
Franz: Sir Orson… You killed General Seth… You will pay for your crimes today!
Orson: Who are you? …It doesn’t matter. All that matters is protecting my wife…

Eirika vs Orson
Eirika: Orson… At long last…
Orson: …Princess Eirika. If anyone could understand my feelings, it might be you.
Eirika: Un… Understand?! You ask me to understand!? After all you have done!?
Orson: For the one I love… I betrayed everything. My country, my lord and master… Everything… All for our happiness…
Eirika: And the people of Renais, who suffer under your reign? Do they not deserve happiness?
Did Seth not deserve happiness, Orson!?
Orson: Seth… He was an impressive knight. He sacrificed his life for king and country. Not even a moment’s pause. A pitiful, unrewarding life, through and through.
Eirika: You only care about yourself, do you? Selfish wretch… You repulse me.
Orson: Myself? Everything I have done, I did for Monica–
Eirika: And she would despise you, were she not dead.
Orson: …
…You are wrong. She lives. She is alive, and she is happy. We love each other dearly… We are so happy… Always…
Eirika: What in the world are you talking about, Orson?!
Orson! Answer me!

A personal favorite of mine, although it really only amounts to a combination of Eirika and Seth’s Orson convos from vanilla with a lot of extra angst injected into Eirika’s dialogue. Seth’s convo with Orson in vanilla is one of the best, if not THE best in the game, so I knew I couldn’t allow a single line to go to waste.
…It’s probably arrogant of me to say, but I am pretty proud of the idea of repurposing Seth’s most famous line from his Orson convo as his final words haha.

Myrrh vs Lyon
Lyon: A manakete? Pah… You don’t stand a chance against me.
Myrrh: …

I honestly have no idea why I made this one. I think I felt it was odd that the Demon King wouldn’t acknowledge one of the two surviving manaketes, but… well, as it’s plain to see, I didn’t really know where to take that idea. Maybe you could interpret it as Lyon pretending to be the Demon King but really having no idea how he’s supposed to react to a manakete lol

Novala vs Riev
Riev: Heh heh heh… Novala? All this time, you lived still? What a surprise. I assumed you perished at Adlas Plains…
Novala: I am no longer your or your master’s lowly follower. I serve the forces of light now! I’ll be known as the hero that vanquished the evil Riev!
Riev: How amusing. After so long, you have learned nothing. You may kneel to another now, but kneeling you remain. Doomed to die unloved, unknown. Poor fool. Heh heh heh…
Novala: You hideous sack of bones! I’ll put an end to your mockery! Take this! For fame and glory!

…REALLY way too much fun to write, this magnificent idiot.

Glen vs Selena (Chapter 26)
Glen: Selena… What have they done to you?
Sigh… All right. Let’s do this.

Duessel vs Valter (Chapter 26)
Duessel: …
I am sorry. It is all my fault…

Joshua vs Caellach (Chapter 26)
Joshua: Oh, hey. They brought you back too, did they?
…Ah, blast. Even you didn’t deserve this fate… I’ll help you go back to sleep. For old times’ sake, eh?

Franz vs Seth (Chapter 27)
Franz: I’m sorry, General Seth…

Yeah, I did just straight up reuse Franz’s death quote. I got SUPER lazy here lol

Fado vs Seth (Chapter 27)
Fado: Seth. All I can say is… Thank you. Thank you for fighting so loyally for Renais. Thank you for serving me so diligently all this time. And… thank you for keeping Eirika safe. Even at the cost of your own life…
I’m sorry that this is all I can do to repay you!

Eirika vs Seth (Chapter 27)
Eirika: Hello, Seth. Are you there? Is there anything left of you? Can you hear me?
…We’ve almost won, Seth. The war is almost over. We just have to take care of the last remnants of Grado. Of Lyon… And you.
Forgive me… I wish there was another way…

Rest well, Seth. You’ve earned it.

Innes vs Eirika?
Eirika?: Oh, Innes… I-I never had the courage to tell you, but… I… I love you!
Innes: That’s enough nonsense out of you!
Eirika?: Heh… Did I touch a nerve?
Innes: …Shut up and die.

On the subject of characters who were too much fun to write, exhibit two:

Forde vs Eirika?
Forde: A fake Princess Eirika, huh… Not a bad plan. If there’s one thing that might have fooled Prince Ephraim…
Eirika?: Who in the world are you?
Forde: Nobody… Nobody at all. Let’s just get this over with, shall we? We’ve places to be.

Fun fact: Eirika? only came to be because while I was making angry Eirika, I accidentally made her look WAY too angry. Legit furious instead of just depressed. Then I gave her a creepy grin and the result was so amazing that I just knew I had to find some way to use it.

L’Arachel vs Eirika?
L’Arachel: For you to steal Eirika’s appearance… Were you truly so envious? This was not necessary! After all, true beauty lies in the heart!
Then again… You don’t seem to have a heart at all. Maybe you DO need to steal Eirika’s beauty after all…
Eirika?: Cease your babbling, girlie. I’ve no need for the little jewel of Rausten’s buffoonery. All you have to do is die so I can show Mansel your body.

Fado vs Eirika?
Fado: Foul demon… What mockery is this?!
Eirika?: What’s wrong, Father? Do you not love your daughter anymore? Oh, that’s so sad… Sniff… You make me cry…
Fado: If you think my arm will waver because you look like Eirika, you are sorely mistaken. You are nothing like her. All you have accomplished is to make me furious!

Eirika vs Eirika?
Eirika?: Insufferable pest… Begone with you! There is only room enough for one princess here!
Eirika: I agree wholeheartedly.

Simple and to the point. Would’ve been out of character coming from vanilla Eirika, but I figured my Eirika had grown bold enough to afford an action hero quip or two.

Duessel vs Jude
Duessel: Dame Jude! What are you doing?
Jude: What does it look like, Obsidian? I’m killing you. And then, the rest.
Duessel: What has happened to you, Jude? I remember the day we were granted our titles. His Majesty Vigarde’s right and left hands. Others came after, but you and I were the first. You told me you wanted nothing more than to serve. To be of use to our emperor! To Grado!
Jude: Ah, yes, to be young and foolish again. I hadn’t seen anything yet, back then.
I’ve lost count of the attempts on his life I’ve stopped. And all for what? He died anyway. His country is in ruins. Nothing he ever did mattered. Nor anything I did. It was all pointless.
Duessel: That is not true. But even if it were! What do you stand to gain by supporting the Demon King? He will obliterate everything and everyone, including you!
Jude: Maybe I don’t mind that. Maybe humanity deserves to die. How about it, Duessel?
Duessel: Jude…!

More fun facts: After killing Seth, I knew I had to make his soulless body a boss for dramatic effect. It would’ve been a waste not to. Then I found myself with Madrika, and I decided to put both in one of the new chapters. Of course, this meant Riev could no longer be in Darkling Woods.

Jude came to be primarily because I wanted an excuse to write a straight up villain, after so many NPCs-turned-playable. I thought it’d be an interesting concept to have someone from Grado figure everything out and voluntarily join the Team Fomortiis. Then I realized I’d accidentally produced the perfect replacement for Riev in Darkling Woods. Funny how it all works out, huh?

Dara vs Morva
Dara: Ah… I can’t believe it… What a terrible tragedy…
…Don’t worry, old friend. We will beat him. And then I’ll go and tell you the good news…

I actually just discovered that this battle convo was assigned to the Ephraim version of Darkling Woods, which means it cannot be seen normally. How lucky! It likely would never have been discovered had it not been for your request, so thanks for that. I’ll release a patch to fix it.

Eirika vs Lyon
Eirika: …The Demon King falls today.
Lyon: I wasn’t putting on an act back there. I meant every word I said. I won’t be defeated. I will save Grado. Even if it means… I must fight you…
Eirika: Yes. And even if it haunts me to my grave… I must stop you. I owe it to everybody who has suffered and died in this war. I owe it to Seth…
Lyon: Eirika…
…If I am to lose… I have to admit, I’d like for it to be you
Eirika: …

Knoll vs Lyon
Knoll: Prince Lyon…
Lyon: Oh, it’s you… Knoll. That’s right, I was going to execute you… I guess they must’ve saved you.
Knoll: Indeed. I never expected to live this long. I was to follow McGregor and the emperor… It is what I deserved, to be sure. But I suppose fate had other ideas.
Lyon: You speak of fate now, Knoll? That’s the foe we set out to vanquish, was it not? To change fate… To control destiny… That’s what we wanted, wasn’t it, Knoll?
Knoll: We were fools, Prince. And now we pay the price. You will die today. And so will I, if there’s any justice in this world.
Lyon: What are you saying, Knoll? Grado’s people are fated to perish, to the last. Soon, I will have the power to prevent that. I’ll save countless lives… It’ll be a good thing, in the end. Knoll, if anybody would see it, I thought it’d be you! And yet, you’re trying to stop me too…
Knoll: Because that is not what will happen, Prince. The Demon King has given you leeway so far. But when the time comes, he will take over… And then, the end will begin. Would that we had not been blind to this, you and I…
Lyon: …Fine, then. Stop me, if you think you have the power.
Knoll: I do not. But it matters not. Today, justice will be served.

Top 10 battle convos that should have existed. Number one:

I always thought it was a disgrace that this convo wasn’t a thing. I can only hope I did this interaction the justice it always deserved.

Bastion vs Lyon
Lyon: You again… You’ve made it this far. I wasn’t expecting that. I’m impressed.
Bastion: …
Lyon: …Well? What are you waiting for? Do it. Fulfill your duty. Before time runs out…
Bastion: …

Eirika vs Fomortiis
Eirika: Lyon… Seth… Lend me strength!

Just created an account to say this because I’ve loved this hack so much over the last few days, but I am having issues with the end of chapter 21x. Whenever I skip the post chapter talking the screen just goes black, but when I let it play out the screen goes white after when the shaman goes to the throne. I am currently playing on 1.6 but I saw theres a new patch out. Can I use my save data on the new patch?

Best experience playing fe8 by far. A lot of the older characters that werent as good in vanilla really shine and I really like a few of the new units as well. Keep up the good work.

Looks really good!

Thanks so much for indulging me with my request! I’m sure that took a minute or two to format into your post. I really do appreciate it though, ahah.

The writing really was top-notch all over! Which I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised about considering your good taste, seeing as you recognize the best boy so easily :3

Anyway, don’t wanna clog up the topic so this will be my last post in it, but thanks again for writing this! I would be delighted if more people followed suit and touched up other existing FE games. This one might have deviated quite a bit from the original, but the added bits really touch up the story experience. If you continue working on hacks I’d look forward to playing the next one you write or contribute to writing on!

I can’t really describe how happy this hack makes me. I always knew that FE8 had great potential but somewhere it felt incomplete and short. There were several patches which improved the gameplay experience by implementing custom animations and skills but there was hardly any change in story.

Your hack simply fulfills that empty spot by not only increasing the chapters but also putting various twists. For instance, I totally loved what you did with Eirika. She’s now one of my favourite lords.

Fado being playable was a very good addition but the lack of King class kinda disappointed me. But ig you can’t have everything in a single patch…

Overall a solid work.

Yes this was fixed in a later patch. Update without fear! Just apply the patch to another copy of the vanilla game, then rename it to the same name as the old file. The save file should carry over without issues.

Thank you so much! If I may ask, did you have any favorites in particular? Vanilla or otherwise, who did you like most in the hack?

Big thanks! Do let me know how it goes if you decide to give it a shot!

It did take some time, but hey, I got something out of it too. The one convo may not be much, but I’m still happy it’s fixed.

Hehehe, right back atcha!

Excellent! I’m not quite sure when or what my next project will be, but we’ll see!

That’s so good to hear. You know, at first I was worried people wouldn’t take as well to my heavy editing of the story. I am (pleasantly) surprised that so many have enjoyed my little fanfic haha.

I really don’t have room left for more classes, sadly. Used up my last for Pratau’s not-hero. Oh well. Can’t be perfect, as you said.

Besides...

You could say since he doesn’t feel he’s worthy of being king throughout the game, the fact that his class is not king is actually a brilliant piece of storytelling through gameplay! Yeah, let’s go with that.

Holy crap i nailed it

Was the name jumbling an attempt to obfuscate it even more or what?

So you did! I’m surprised. I didn’t think there was much chance someone would have played both this old, forgotten game and my little hack.

The name jumbling was more me being cheeky with my reference than an attempt at hiding it. If I wanted to hide it I wouldn’t have picked the single most distinctive name of the game’s cast lol. Pratau is the name of some German town, but otherwise I’ve never seen it anywhere else. Someone who knows the game would immediately see the connection, as you did.
