[FE8] Sreng 1182

Greetings everyone! I’m Rice, and I’m here to announce I am beginning development of my first ever rom hack.

Sreng 1182

It is a “what-if” scenario where Leif’s attempts to liberate the Sreng peninsula from Faerghan occupation in the year 1182 of the Three Hopes timeline didn’t fail. There will be many obvious parallels between this hack and FE5 as they are both stories about a young man named Leif, who is the grandson of a slain king/tribal chieftain, and is attempting to liberate a peninsula that was conquered by a hostile foreign power. I also am hoping to include gameplay elements from FE5 into this hack as well such as the capture mechanic and leadership stars, though this may prove to be too difficult for a first timer like myself.

This hack is in its infancy, I am still writing the script and creating characters and learning how to use FEBuilder. I have never been good at visual art, writing and performing arts have always been my personal passions and strengths, so I am hoping to perhaps get in contact with and partner up with an artist who can do portraits and such. If anyone fitting that description happens to be reading this and is interested in joining me, please send me a DM.

I will do my best to keep this thread updated on my progress, and hope to some day soon present a WIP build to you all. I have no idea how many chapters this thing will have. I hope that I can make it into a full 24+ chapter game but honestly it might end up closer to 16. Anyway, thanks for reading and stay tuned for updates.

Update 1:

  • I have downloaded FEBuilder and all the other programs necessary to creating Rom Hacks.
  • I have a rough draft of the first chapter’s script
  • I have a list of names and spark notes for some of the early game playable characters
  • Currently watching tutorials on how to use FEBuilder

Update 2:

  • I have completed the final scripts for chapters 1-4
  • I have begun creating the early game playable characters in FEBuilder
  • I’m contacting artists to hopefully get some portraits and sprite palettes made
  • I’ve decided to make the maps last, since that will definitely take the longest.

There are some portraits available in the repository, if those help.

You can also rip the portraits from Thracia itself (or the fe wiki entries on its characters) and convert them into GBA portraits if you can learn the portrait format.

Character creation is still an ongoing effort, just checking in to say I’ve elected to pick portraits out from the free use repository and perhaps use the nifty portrait maker rather than breaking the bank commissioning a crap ton of mugs for my first ever romhack. Anyway yeah this is basically a lil baby update.

Oh also I am deliberately avoiding using portraits that have been used in rom hacks I have personally played.

Update 3

  • I’ve gotten the hang of character creation and custom class creation in FEBuilder
  • Several early game playable characters are finished aside from battle animation palettes
  • Made some minor edits and fixes to the chapter scripts, have begun cooking up the next batch
  • Couldn’t find free use portraits that fit the vibe of some units and the GBA portrait builder doesn’t automatically create blinking and talking frames, you need to add those manually. Because of this, I am going to commission an artist to make a small handful of portraits for specific characters including Leif
  • This is overall harder but more fun than I expected, really enjoying the time I’ve spent working on this. My routine is I spend a few days exclusively writing the chapter scripts, take like a two day break, and then spend a few days making characters and custom classes, then take another break. Rinse and repeat.

Update 4

  • Finished the script for chapters 5-7 as well as the optional chapter 7x

Not the biggest or most exciting update, but that’s just how the cookie crumbles.

So like…l want to know, what is like the “unit design” for this hack because no pressure, l will play this eitherway, but how “wacky” will this cast be, l like funny stuff like. For example " 0 skill capped blind sniper but has bow range+1 as the prf skill". Because it’s fun ( and lore stuff but you know)

There’s a myrmidon chef who loves fruit and his personal skill restores HP if he starts his turn in the wilderness because he’s foraging for berries to add to his next parfait or other such dish. I think that’s the wackiest character I have.

Update 5

  • Majority of playable characters have been fully added aside from palettes
  • Majority of custom assets and classes have been made
  • Chapters 8 and 9 have been written

Update 6

  • Chapters 10-12 have been written
  • Have taken a break from writing new chapters to go back and improve the older ones with the help of a fellow author. I have a fair amount of experience with creative writing but I wanted to run things by someone else with experience as well, especially since I’ve never written the script for a video game/rom hack before.
  • Current number of fully created playable characters is 22, aiming to have at least 30 total playable characters by the end of the story if not more
