[FE8] Fire Emblem - The Last Dragon

I wasn’t able to reproduce the glitch, so I would assume it’s a one time thing or maybe some emulator issue.

Okay I finally beat the game and here are my thoughts!

Summary

-Boss avo seems a little high feel and they have high hit and equally high avo. So it’s not a slug fest it’s they dodging and hitting us. Typically bosses don’t usually have higher luck unless it’s rare and they are meant to be dodge tanks without a ton a strength. But it seems like all them on forts and thrones with high avo and your hit chance is like 50 or less with weapon advantage. This is on easy so I can only imagine how much more tedious they are on higher difficulty

-The narrative wasn’t anything overly complicated. It’s short, sweet and to the point. I personally don’t mind that in some hacks, like not all have to be like this grandiose thing, it feels like a nice homage to sacred stones.

-Is the low Unit fielding for a reason? By chapter 16 the most you still can field is 12 which typically by now you usually are getting 14-16 people out per chapter on average with 12 being for certain chapters meant for less units. I personally think kr should be increased to 14 at least by chapter 14. Especially later chapters like 12 units for the final chapters is just very very different

-I really like the characters. They are the type of characters you actually wanna get to know. And the supports do a great job of letting you know more about them and answer burning questions you may have about them. Like I never would have gotten Rina is a little promiscuous from her chapter or recruit, I only learned that from her conversation w Lucas. Or that Aversa is like a sibling to Coulson. Which some people may not like but I enjoy the fact that, I get to learn about who their true selves are through supports. Though I’m biased cuz I love supports. I thought the one between Eloah & Trevor was lowkey hilarious once I realized what was going on. My favorites from this playthrough were Dom & Aversa (beautiful and sad) and Lucas & Rina.

-chapter 18 it feels like there may have been burnout. Though the hack as a whole offers a simplistic experience which I like, this one felt especially bare, that may have been the idea since it’s like the calm before the storm. But for such a late game map it was just lacking any oomph for me personally. It felt like it was just there in comparison to the rest of the chapters. The boss couldn’t even counter close combat. I do think it would be nice to have a boss quote with Aurora and even Nana. Like they have this established beef already with him trying to kill Aurora then he got away and now he running into both these girls again.

-On the subject of Chapter 18, I think the fact that we had the world map after every chapter and then suddenly don’t go back to the world map after this chapter which means you can’t go back and actually prepare for the final chapters. So I didn’t shop and was completely unprepared for the following 3 chapters without prep . If you’re going to do this, then it should be made abundantly clear this is last chance we get to shop. I mean I was in 19xxx with iron weapons and e rank tomes and no ranged weapons.

-19xxx I believe the knight guarding the door to the throne should have a door key if you’re going to have the door here. If you don’t bring your only thief, lockpicks or have someone with unlock staffs then you would kinda be outta luck and just stuck.

-20 to me was my fave map. It was just a good map, I think Nick again avo was waaay to high I mean I had overleveled people from the forest with like 20% hit chance, crazy. I think it’s a little weird he doesn’t have a boss conversation with Tas when they clearly had created a bond. Same with Than & Azra

-Lastly, touching on Nana as a lord. She seems completely overshadowed in comparison to her counterpart Dom. Even when they lead the attack on the tower, though I picked her route Dom still was the one who like gave the rousing final speech and then is the one who has a moment with King Zefyr (awesome animation btw) at the end. She doesn’t feel like an important figure of the army just kinda there to be a second lord. This was with me playing her route

Please don’t take anything I said personally just my honest thoughts. I still very much had fun and am literally starting my second playthrough! excited to see what the future holds for this

Don’t worry about me taking anything personal, I’m always happy about feedback, especially if it’s as positive as yours

Summary
  • Yes, balance might definitly not be perfect, as there was only so much playtesting I could do. However, bosses should not be stronger on higher difficulties, as there are no hard mode bonuses in fe8 as far as I know. And, in your screenshot, you don’t have weapon advantage because the runesword is treated as dark magic.

  • The unit fielding is mostly like in fe8, therefore it’s pretty low sadly. I’m also not completely happy with it, but changing it now would be difficult as I would have to rebalance the enemies too if I’d change it.

  • Yes, chapter 18 is supposed to feel pretty easy, as it’s at a point in the story where you’re pretty much at your strongest, and the enemy is in a position where they’ve practically already lost since they’re alone and can’t get any reinforcements. And it’s ment to be one last relaxing chapter before the finale. The boss not being able to retaliate at close range is part of his character, he ist ment to be arrogant but completely useless in reality. However, I agree that he should definitly have a conversation with Aurora. Only reason he doesn’t is that I created chapter 18 before chapter 9 Nana route. But that’s something I might add in the final version.

  • Not being able to shop after chapter 18 is kind of being hinted at in the dialog with Nissa, as it doesn’t make sense storywise. However, I could maybe make it a bit clearer in the dialog.

  • Yes, being able to softlock on the door in chapter 19xx is a big problem. Currently, the options are Leila as rogue/with a lockpick, a door key, an open staff or using long range magic on the boss. But I don’t want to give the guard a door key, as it would trivialize the door even being there. I thought about adding an event that automatically opens the door on turn 30 or something, but I haven’t gotten around to adding it yet.

  • A boss conversation for Tas and Nick could definitly be added. I thought about adding a boss conversation between Tas and Azra, but on the final map, Tas says that everything that is to be said has been said, so I didn’t. Than doesn’t talk, so he has no conversations.

  • In the last third of the game, Dom is more main character than Nana. That’s due to him having a personal relationship with King Zefyr, and he lost more in the story than Nana, so he’s just a bit more involved. Dom being way to overpowered also doesn’t help with this. I tried to make Nana also really powerful, for example by giving her her unbreakable sword, but in the end she is a bit overshadowed. One might not like this, but it’s just the way it is.

  • I didn’t reply to all the positive things you wrote, but thank you very much, it really means a lot to me

I would be interested in what characters you used and what you promoted them to, if you don’t mind telling.

Sorry for the late answer, I’m pretty buisy currently.

oh thank gosh, I was worried I upset you!

Summary

-Ahhh that makes more sense, Yeah I either had bosses that I was like downing in two shots or bosses that dodged for 10 turns lol. No inbetween.

-Yes I would love to see him piss his pants when Aurora shows up lol

-I must have glanced over this dialouge. I get the intent behind it, it just caught me so off guard and I was just soooooo unprepared.

-Dom is mad OP but honestly I found a way to make my NaNa just as strong if not stronger. (Don’t take this from me lol) But I Nana with a short bow…pretty much can solo anything. Helped me with a few bosses, high hit, high speed and negating defense…OP lol

-For sure here was my crew

He was for sure my worst unit but not bad

She was my best unit

She was my second best. Solo half the map

And we come to my third best

No don’t worry about that, sorry again for taking so long to respond!

Summary

Yes I wanted to make the short bow more interesting without the typical 1-2 range, so it’s now really op xD

Thanks, that’s really interesting to me!

so many blonde people

lol omg I didn’t notice that but you are right. Omg half my party lol

So if you had to say, hypothetically, put a number to the version this is, what would it be, hypothetically? (For the latest release)
So normally 1.0 means the game is in a state where you can play through it all the way from start to finish, is my understandng.
But before you said there were things left untouched when you were releasing this. Can I ask how many updates there have been to this since? Or how far away you think it is from being completely finished, aside from patches to fix bugs and glitch, and minor tweaks.
I found this today. Finished patching it a min ago. It just helps me when naming the roms & folders they’re in, especially patches. Having the date helps, so AT LEAST I have that for most of them unless they’re super obscure or old romhacks. So it’s moreso for cataloging and ̶O̶K̶A̶Y̶ ̶I̶’̶l̶l̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶h̶o̶n̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶i̶t̶’̶s̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶O̶C̶D̶

So uhhh, help a girl out? ^^’

It is true that for most games, the 1.0 means the game is in the state you just described. I don’t know if the developer wants to put something else in the game, but you can play it from start to finish just fine. So yeah, just write 1.0 and be done with it. Besides, the game was uploaded to this website when it was finished (well, I didn’t see it before that anyway), so only the developer knows how many versions of it there were. @dlang518 ?

The game was technically finished when I released it, and since then there where two updates fixing bugs. So maybe 1.0.2?
The things I still want to do are just some minor graphical improvements and checking the remaining support dialogs for animation bugs, which I haven’t had the time for yet. And after some feedback, I’d also like to add some bonus content.
However, those are all only minor tweaks, and the game is in a state where I would call it finished.

Well, according to my backup folders I’m currently on 5.2 xD
But those are mostly unfinished versions and as you said, I only released the finished one.

Hello, I just got the game running not too long ago, and I have a question. Where are the growth rates of the units? Most new FE hacks are able to show them nowadays, but it seems this one doesn’t.

Hey, sorry for the late answer. Yes, I didn’t install the patch that shows growth rates, as I didn’t deem it that necessary. I guess the easiest way would be to open the game in febuilder, as I don’t have any official document with the units growth rates.

Ah, I see… Unfortunately, I’m playing on mobile and don’t have access to FEBuilder.

If it’s important to you, I could make a list of the characters growth, I’d just need a little time for that.

Thanks. That would be great.

Finally finished, I added the growth rates to the description.

Thanks

Well, now I have another question. I’m about to promote Rina, and I was wondering if Bishop was gonna have anything over Valkyrie for her.

As there are no monsters in the game, Bishop hasn’t much going for it. The stat caps (except defense) are a little bit higher than the Valkyries, but Valkyrie is probably still the better choice.
