[FE8] Fire Emblem: Drums of War <v. 2 - COMPLETE! 22 chapter campaign!>

Here’s my rough tier list of bosses.

That seems about right. I passed on the necromancer, so of course she’s really good. I did have Helje and the nomad woman but didn’t use them long term. Jaro was in my team from day 1, and as handsome as Evander is, his low speed REALLY hurts when you start taking so much damage twice.

Etienne was also pretty useful for me, but again, being slow didn’t help him at all. I tried to use him with Hesterine (A support, was cute) and they both ended up being bad so just kinda weighed me down in the end by not allowing me to train someone else.

do i have to fight estrelle in chapter5?.

As per the briefing at the beginning of the chapter, it isn’t expected. The Mission action from the menu will generally clarify objectives.

Ah , I just don’t want to miss out on her since she gives me she will join vibes.

giving out someone with her stats as early as chapter 5 would be a little too broken

there isn’t anything so esoteric as having to interact with a unit outside of their join chapter for join kind of deal in dow

in that case i leave her be.
on her own i could take on her but she has her comrades around her so id rather not deal with it lol

Hello, it’s been a while.

I’ve been working on a Japanese translation of your game because I wanted to fully immerse myself in the story. I’ve reached a playable state and am currently fine-tuning the details. The translation has been quite a challenge due to the heavy use of metaphors and homages to various literature. To be honest, I would have been lost without Google Gemini!

During the process, I discovered several typos, glitches, and areas for improvement. Please find my feedback below:

  1. Typo: Chronological Inconsistency in Chapter 3
In TextID 0xA64 (C3 Diary), the date is listed as “22nd Summer.”

TextID: 0xA64 [ToggleRed]22nd Summer, 471 PF[.] Nuniesa, northern Aulestra[ToggleRed][A]

However, the previous stage (C2, TextID 0xA23) is 28th Summer. This makes the timeline go backward. Since C4 (TextID 0xA24) is the 51st, the date for C3 should be between 28 and 51. I have temporarily set it to 42nd in my translation to maintain consistency.

C2 Diary TextID: 0xA23 [ToggleRed]28th Summer, 471 PF[.] The Channel[ToggleRed][A]

C3 Diary TextID 0xA64: [ToggleRed]22nd Summer, 471 PF[.] Nuniesa, northern Aulestra[ToggleRed][A]

C4 Diary TextID: 0xA24 [ToggleRed]51st Summer, 471 PF[.] Aukud Keep[ToggleRed][A]

  1. Possible Typo: Direction to Aulestra
TextID 0x9BA says Aulestra is to the “east.”

TextID: 0x9BA: I’ve heard around that you’re looking to head east to Aulestra?

Based on the map, Aulestra is located to the south. While it might be “southeast” from Barossia, simply stating “south” would be much clearer for first-time players.

  1. Suggestion: Clarifying Leijia as a Port Town
In TextID 0x0AB4, it would be helpful to explicitly mention that Leijia is a port town. New players often don’t realize C1 takes place in the docks of Leijia.

TextID: 0x0AB4 … Rest of you, get ready to head out.[…] We’re leaving for Leijia.[A]

  1. Glitch: Chapter 10 Flag Issue
In C10, if a player stalls for 20 turns, all civilians become “Player” units, but Flag 0x25 remains ON. This makes it impossible to escape even if you open the gates. I recommend turning off Flag 0x25 during the event where civilians turn into player units on turn 20.

  1. Suggestion: Identifying Bittencourt
In TextID 0x98C, Radu mentions “Bittencourt.” Since first-time players may not know this is the enemy capital unless they’ve read the guide thoroughly, it would be clearer to specify it as such in the dialogue.

TextID: 0x98C [OpenFarRight]Yeah, we’ll be in Bittencourt by first bloody snow, heard that line before…[A]

  1. Suggestion: Rijesca’s Lore
In the later half of the game, it is suddenly revealed that Rijesca is a fertile land that exports food to the Confederation. Currently, in the council scene (TextID: 0x9A8), it is only explained that Rijesca is a front-line base and its fall would lead to war reaching Barossia. I think it would be more effective to add a line like: “If we lose that land, we lose our vital food supplies and soldiers, and the flames of war will surely reach Barossia.”

  2. Suggestion: Prosit vs. Prost
In TextID 0xA38, since the characters are conservative royals and nobles, would “Prosit!” (the more archaic/formal version) be more fitting than “Prost!”? (Admittedly, I’m a fan of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, where they use Prosit!)

  3. Suggestion: Identifying Rowland and the Council Members
In TextID 0x9F3 (after C8), the dialogue should explicitly name the characters and their goals.
Players might forget who they are. It should be clear that:
They are marching from the capital, Covenant, toward Rijesca.
Petrarch and Ashwood are council members.
    The general’s name is Rowland.

In “character business,” it is vital for players to remember names and faces. Just as young idols are taught to refer to themselves by their own names so fans remember them, I think it’s important here to link Rowland’s portrait to his name as early as possible. Currently, his portrait appears in this event, but his name isn’t clearly linked to his face for the player until much later (E-1).

  1. Suggestion: Identifying Tryphon
In TextID 0xA8E, when Tryphon’s portrait and dialogue appear for the first time, he should be addressed as “Rijesca’s governor, Tryphon.” Since his name was only mentioned briefly in the prologue, players may not recognize him. Using his name in dialogue helps ground the scene.

  2. Glitch: Act 3 Ending BGM
In the scene where Paoletta is hired for 5000G, the BGM does not return to the map theme. You might need to add the “ASMC ReturnToMapBGM” command at the end of the event.

  3. Suggestion: Machva Location Mention
In the prologue conversation with Baros (TextID: 0x907 ), it would be helpful to mention “Machva” in the dialogue (e.g., “The roads here in Machva have become dangerous”). Some players miss the location pop-up at the start.

Personal Impressions:
I truly enjoyed the story; I love military chronicles, so this was a treat. I previously asked about the final boss’s motives, and after translating, I think I understand now. It’s a tragic result of everyone trying their best to survive. It’s a rare, mature “dark fantasy” take on the FE formula.

My favorite line is the soldier with the scorpion in TextID 0xAB8. His descent into madness is portrayed brilliantly! (@_@)

Questions regarding the Lore

Q1: How did Kallaste survive?
Why did the main character, Kallaste, not die in the End Event of C5 or the Start Event of C12?
It’s strange that she doesn’t die even after having her stomach cut open or drinking poison.
Personally, I suspect that Calista, who was nursing her alone in C5, gave her some of her “dragon’s blood” to drink.
It seems like she is under some mysterious dragon protection.

Is there a hidden setting, or is it left to the reader’s imagination?

Q2: Why is Rowland’s lance named “Komnene”?
In Japanese, I first read it as “Kon-nene” (like a Hololive YouTuber’s greeting! こんねね),
nene

but I realized it refers to Anna Komnene of the Byzantine Empire. Google Gemini suggested it might be historical irony: Rowland (brute force) wielding Komnene (a symbol of intellect and legitimacy). Is this the intended meaning?

Q3: What does “audition” mean regarding Tryphon?

In TextID 0x9F3, a council member says:
[OpenFarRight]Well, he’s making a hash of the audition.[A]

Does “audition” here mean he was making a formal appeal to the council for Rijesca to gain full citizenship/rights within the Confederation, and he is failing to impress them?

In this case, I assume “he” refers to Rijesca’s governor, Tryphon. Am I correct in understanding that he gave a speech at the Confederation parliament demanding citizenship?
And is it correct to understand that he failed and has not yet received citizenship?
I don’t think there are any elections in Rijesca at the moment, so I’m having trouble understanding what “audition” means.
I understand that Tryphon’s family serves as Rijesca’s governor by hereditary order.

Q4: Is the old lady villager in the house on the far right of C6 lesbian? She lives in the house where you can obtain the item “Bodkin Bow.” TextID: 0x99C

She says “My wife,” so at first, based on the text resource, I thought she was a man, so I created a translation resource. After that, I was surprised when I looked at the game screen and saw that her portrait was a woman.

google gemini and I were discussing this a lot, and we thought that if we considered her to be lesbian, it would add depth to this stage.

In this conservative rural area with many veterans, she would probably be discriminated against,
so she probably found hope in the anti-establishment rebel army.
However, the rebel army is apparently ultra-conservative, wishing to restore the monarchy and the nobility…
I think she made the ultimate choice: “which extremist side is better?”

If this is just a mistake in the portrait, then I’m probably reading too much into it.

JP tanslate patch.

Thank you so much for your efforts here. I can only imagine how much work this project must have been, and I’m so grateful you saw fit to create this.

Per the questions
  1. Estrelle didn’t go for the coup de grace on Roxelana, and she didn’t drink most of the poison. She wasn’t used to drinking wine, and didn’t get much down her before the events started to kick in.

  2. Yes, the Komnenian dynasty was what Rowland’s spear pulled from. Mostly the intent was to give a sense of an imperial legitimacy wielded by someone who was nominally just one of many within a republic.

  3. Citizenship was out of Rijescan hands, but the hope was that with sufficient service they would earn it for themselves, as the Confederation likes to claim that merit will invariably lead to reward.

  4. Yes, the woman’s mention of a wife is intentional. For all the Confederation’s faults, they have no particular institutionalised discrimination against same-sex relationships.

Starting my third run of DoW, still thoroughly enjoying it. However, this post isn’t about explaining why it’s my favourite (though I shall write that)…

Upon reading hypothesis 7743 for the first question, it brought a scene to my mind.

The scene, partly inspired by Undset’s Kristin Lavransdatter: somewhere, Calista stood in the shadows, the dagger in her hand faintly reflecting light—from the setting sun beyond the window or an oil lamp or something.

I don’t think this scene actually happened, as there’s no hint of it in the plot. But it tempts me to write something… Therefore, I would like to enquire whether I might write a mini fanfiction from Calista’s perspective, set after the end of Chapter Five (probably without this scene).

I hope this does not trouble you, and once again, thank you for creating such a splendid game.

Go ahead! I love to see any and all creations inspired by my own work, whether fanfic or fanart or whatever, so I’d be delighted.

Two weeks have passed, and I’m here with the promised post… I’ve completed DoW, for the 2.5th time.

Why 2.5th? Full of nagging

This isn’t really a question, because anyone who’s played DoW knows the reason…

I first played DoW last August, right after I started playing FE—about four months? For me at the time, it was a bit challenging from the start, but I still managed to complete the first six chapters smoothly.

Then, in Chapter 7, all generic units were lost, and in Chapter 9 the fog and the large map really made me feel extremely tense. In fact, I completed them without losing any unique characters. But it really wore me out, so I decided to wait until my skills improve before playing again. I even watched gameplay videos just to satisfy my curiosity about what happens next.

A month has passed, and I find myself still thinking about it. It’s… the plot. Even knowing how it plays out, I still want to experience it for myself.

So I thought, whatever, and then restarted it, spent four days completing it (sold off all the bosses, I guess this is the easiest mode in the game).

Now, after a quarter, playing DoW again naturally brings a new experience. I finally figured out the entire plot. And since I was playing on my laptop, I finally listened to its music. The one that impressed me the most was No. 3. The jarring opening fits those scenes perfectly.

And gameplay.

I think my skills have improved, after playing HC. I progressed through most chapters more aggressively, and obtained the Angelic Robe in Ch 5, the Zorya Shield in Ch 9, and Easter Eggs.

You are a good teacher, Parrhesia.

However, I was more cautious on some maps. Ch 14, to be precise. This map is huge, and there are so many enemies, so it easily makes me want to go on a rampage. Last time, I had Roxelana kill Volgar and then stay in his fort, so the next few enemy turns turned into her slaughterfest. Honestly, it’s a bit bad for my mental health.

The story in this chapter, along with the description of the Easter egg… If there were a poll for “the chapter that makes you feel war is truly terrible,” I’d cast my vote for it without hesitation.

Why is it my favorite? More nagging

Love Needs No Reason.

Errrr I don’t even believe that myself.

My favorite part is the dream sequence at the end of Act I. In terms of gameplay, this serves as a relief after two intense levels. In terms of narrative, I enjoy how you use dreams to explore her inner worlds.

Another thing I really like is… the vibe of Russian literature? I’m not talking about those names or the food. It wasn’t until this play that I noticed them. It’s mainly the texts in the Codex, especially Berenice’s. Perhaps it’s because most of the Russian literature I’ve read is about war…

As for the plot, I love it. In fact, because it’s so good, it actually makes me a bit hesitant to play other NQR games. I worry whether my English is good enough to fully appreciate them.

Well, you know, I ended up playing HC after all. As for Do5… I still have faith in the translation team…

(I’m sorry this part is short. But I tend to talk less about things I love…)

And the mini fanfiction, yeah I finished it. If you notice any mistakes, please tell me. After all, my reading and writing are both terrible…

Anyway, Happy Spring Festival! :firecracker:

Hey – really like the first four chapters.

But the game freezes between chapters 4 and 5 for me. Tried replaying chapter 4 once but still hit a black screen. Anyone familiar with what causes this and how to proceed?

More color: I think it’s anything that brings me to the save menu that crashes it. Suspending or losing from within chapter 4 also hits the black screen.

Edit: After about a hundred permutations of loading saves / copying saves / praying to Yune I got it to work. Couldn’t tell you why but here we goooooooo.

Made an account on here just to say I loved this hack so much. I’m new to the romhack scene for FE specifically and really only knew FE6 to FE14 beforehand. This one did kick my butt a lot, but that damned story kept me crawling back for more punishment until the lategame made me feel more secure in my units. Here’s waiting for the next game as I move to finish Do5 and Homecoming!!
