Finally finished the romhack. Played all the way though Difficult mode. That sure was a lot of Destined Travels. I’m gonna say a bunch of stuff now.
Stuff i liked
The same unit rescue-dropping; The enemies getting a red tint when a unit enters their range; The unit design, mostly at least; The progression of the avaiable weaponry
Stuff i disliked
the game seems to lose it’s identity alogn the way. It stops being simple, it stops being about money management and making important decisions. Instead, it becomes about using the big hitter units and only them to deal with enemies, since every enemy becomes so tanky on both sides of the spectrum.
Feelings about the Earlygame
It was a nice part of the game, with simple and tight gameplay, every decision being important. The importance given on gathering money, and readying levels while holding the scrolls for maximum gain. It was the most fun part of the game, in my opinion.
Summary
Feelings about the midgame
(I consider the Midgame to be after the start of the Neight Arc, and before the 5th intermission)
Map design gets a little more confusing here, especially in A New Start (Where the player doesn’t really get much information or reason to go anywhere beyond rushing to the red house), and the transition to promoted units and enemies is rough, but it’s still fine enough gameplay. I liked the map where we fight against Helios especially, though the objective was a bit silly in practice. There’s one horrible chapter in the midgame…
Chapter 5-5 “Mother”
This awful experience of a chapter starts a terrible trend for the Endgame which is huge Rout maps with tons of enemies. It’s just such a slog to get though! Thife says himself, the only reasonable choice is keeping everyone together, but that also means Routing everyone takes even longer!
And specially in the case of this chapter, why the fuck is it even a Rout? It would make much more sense for it to be a Kill boss. You wouldn’t even need to change the outro cutscene too much, since the heroes would get surprised about the mooks insistence without a leader anyway! It’s just, so, exhausting of a chapter, man. (And reinforcements up until turn 32?! 32?! Why?)
Endgame (oh boy)
Read my rant of chapter 5-5, and repeat it for every Rout map onwards. Some are slightly worse, some are slightly better, the awful core of the experience stays the same sigh. The maps that aren’t Rout are actually decent though. I was pleasantly surprised to learn I could finish the boat map quickly. The final stretch of the game isn’t that bad, but Curtis embodies my feelings entirely with his words when talking to Genie Ben.
Pre-promotes and growth units
Yeah, just wanted to note that there’s no way someone’s bringing pre- promos to Endgame. The base stats of later Pre-Promos don’t properly scale along the way, and even the initial ones, like Darius and Georgia, simply cannot compete with promo bonuses.
Final Team
Curtis, me boy. He starts out as a good, reliable lord, and finishes the game a reliable lord, with supply access. He did less damage than I wish, but he made up for it by just being good.
Weirdly enough, she kinda seemed to fall off after getting her promotion. She was a great user of the Excalibur and Fortune Shield, sure, but in practice she was often less tanky than necessary due to her lower speed and non capped HP.
Not much to say, she didn’t contribute too much besides being a high rank staff bot. Her promotion only granting her D rank light really hampers any combat use she could have. Shame. She’s better than Aleffin in basically everything.
Amazing Unit. Satisfying to watch grow, and beautifully reliable against multiple enemies. Her promotion was a very welcome addition.
I was expecting her to be a traditional Est, then expected her to have some insane promotion into an Uber halberdier, and then I was finally hit with a promotion into a Dancer lol. Would recruit her again.
Thief. his combat ability got worse and worse, relatively speaking. But his advices were invaluable (sorta). Also the only thief I’d trust to steal anything
His intimidate was great throughout the game, and his promotion into Warrior was insane. His absurd Con did more harm than good though, since he’s still a 6 mov infantry, and nobody could rescue him. And Pear was already split in her duties with Foh and Y.
Honestly, i shouldn’t have bothered trainig and promoting him. At least he made a Loss reference, and recruited Y, which is more than enough to justify paying for him.
The Goat. Absolute Est timing. She had to go though a really scuffed training Arc, but the results more than made up for it. Lots of the Endgame was just me throwing her all the way towards enemies, and watching her either one-shot them, or severely weaken then. Couldn’t have done it without her!
At the time, he seemed like the best royal to get, magic user and all. I’m not 100% sure of that. He was good at dealing with enemy mages, until they got too strong for him. And then he fell off.
Bob. Was a valuable flier thoughtout the game, especially since I didn’t get the first pegasus. Fell off by the end.
Potential woman, with her Luna. I thought after her promotion she’d be crazy, but nah. And say it with me: She fell off by the end. Was a good staffbot tho.
As soon as i got a Flamberge in Neight, i wished i had this guy to use it. He later become the dedicated user of the first Aura Brand I got, and he made good use of it. Fell off less than the others.
My Magnificent and Cherished King, Renard. Training him was a bit, until I did some boss abuse and promoted him. His near capped Magic allowed him to be a great staffbot, and his high Res made him a great weakened of magic enemies (for a time). I mainly brought him to the Endgame as a staffbot, but in the final chapter especifically, I wanted to just incinerate the boss
And incinerate he did lol.
Despite some of my harshness on the Endgame, I truly did enjoy my time with this hack. I won’t forget this romhack for a good while, and I wish you good luck on any future projects and endeavors. Thank you for this game, HunterAurzo.
