[FE8] [Complete] The Dark Amulet v1.6 (08/08/2024)

I really appreciate the response! To be completely honest, I get really nervous discussing these things on public forums. I try to do this as respectfully and as focused on my feelings as I can, but I’ve been absolutely flamed for my feedback on gay rep. So it’s heartwarming to see you so receptive.

I only ever read the best of intentions from you in your writing, and I’m really excited to see what you come up with in the sequel! People are indeed people, connection is indeed connection, and you can indeed write totally captivating and believable queer characters!

Best of luck to you!!

Chapter 15. It’s usually considered poor form to have stealables on reinforcements when there are no chests or stealables visible on the map from the start. It’s not a huge deal, but do take note.

Edit. Also on 15. I’m sure you’ve been told it before, but you’re very good at writing FE dialogue. This boss convo felt straight out of an official game, and that takes skill.

thanks to this hack I found a great song to add to my collection:

I like how sparingly this song was use in the Hack and was only present during the most emotional parts of the Hack. Thanks @Vorgus

Two hours a night, every night. I find development to be a very calming way to wrap up the day :stuck_out_tongue:

The real question is how long the supports will take me. I only have three more chapters to make, but the supports usually take months to write…

Damn, my favorite part… Well, you did a good job with The Dark Amulet’s supports (bugs with Elyse and Sophia aside), you’ll make it right.

Damn this engrossing hack, making me forget to be critical.
The first time I played this hack, I didn’t use Shorn. Chapter…18, I think, the second prison escape chapter, was really hard.
This time I did use Shorn, and it was really easy. Though I still regret using Shorn, because man, he’s not very good.
I’m envisioning a playthrough where I didn’t use any of them. Shorn and Miley with some early-game levels, Shelia, Harlan, and Galen barely touched. It sounds god-damned impossible, and I worry about that possibility every time I rec this hack. And I rec this hack a lot.

Chapter 18 is cool in theory, a bit messy in execution. I’ve never heard anyone getting soft locked by it, though. Miley will always have Kiss of Death (unless it already broke, in which case she’s likely leveled up and pretty strong). Same with Shorn and Kelikaga, Galen and Chivalry. Harlan gets Shadowbane. Base level Harlan with Shadowbane does serious damage. Plus there is a Dark Contract early in the level and Harlan starts at level 10 so base Harlan can promote.

It’s always solvable… but sometimes it’s clunky. There isn’t any chapter quite like it in the sequel.

I took Chivalry lance from Galen before that chapter … he spawn in the wedding naked… and crap … I have to replay Shadow Clones paladins chapter again … :joy: … I’have promoted Shorn and Miley … not Galen …

I really appreciate being able to rescue staff Ormer. It feels like something other games or hacks would just not let you do for whatever reason.

That’s a shame. If something’s cool in theory but messy in execution, then that’s a sign to work on that execution, not drop it entirely.
And I didn’t mean literally god-damned impossible. Softlock? Nah.

There is a prison break level! But it’s not as rigid as Chapter 18

This scene remains fucked. Visually, I mean.
Also wow, spoilers here leave much to be desired.

I gotta be honest, in my first playthrough I just straight up never found any secret shops. Not one. And I checked every suspicious-looked tile I could find; only ones I didn’t try is those side towers in the Tower of Magic revisit after this. Bit of a shame.
Come to think of it, I don’t think I ever found any boots either.

Managed to beat Fenix in Chapter 9 by promoting Shorn, I was a bit disappointed there wasn’t any dialogue acknowledging it though

Besides that, I’m really enjoying this hack!

I always wondered if that was possible. Great job, very cool.

Yo, I’m playing through the hack right now and I love it, got a lot of thoughts, planning to leave a full review after I’ve beaten the game. I just need to make a quick post about Chapter 22, because it was PEAK. So many cool moments, one after another (some of them thanks to the timing of support unlocks). The tileset gives this level the feeling of an oppressive tomb. Julia gets to visit her father’s grave and also get laid with the guy who tells her where to find her father’s grave (sidenote, it’s amazing that that was just a B support, and now I’m reconsidering my plan to pair her with someone else). Tancred drops some bombshell lore. The boss soliloquizes from his throne like a goddamn Shakespeare villain. Our hero finds himself caught in the jaws of a moral dilemma. Wait, why is that black textbox there? That’s not good.

And of course,

This hack is amazing. You put so much effort into it and it shows. I love unique story line, new classes animations and more. But I especially love the battle music. For some reason that shit got me bumping

@Vorgus Found a bug. I’m playing v1.5 and in chapter 22, Elyse is bugged. As you know, at the end of turn 1, she should appear with the cyclops slowly walking to her position in this place, but… As you see, nothing. The camera doesn’t even move to their position. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I warped Edric to this position in turn one? Because I did so in every previous version and it never happened this way.

I just finished this amazing hack and all I have to say is holy shit. This is honestly the best hack I have played out of all of them (which is extremely high praise because I’ve played both Vision Quest and Eligor’s Spear). I am going to talk about what I loved below, so be aware for some spoilers

SPOILERS

Wow Vorgus. I’m going to start with the characters. I loved the beginning 3 of Edric, Shorn, and Miley. Edric is such an extremely well protagonist, he’s truly a good hearted person seeking justice and good will for the world, which his ending makes a lot of sense (or is it his ending?). Shorn is my favorite character hands down. His mysterious aura and motives are insane and he was an absolutely busted unit. When I hit lvl 10 with Shorn on his promo and he got the ability to have 2 turns it was wraps, I would send him off by himself to take on 6 units at a time and he would dodge every attack and crit back. Miley is a caring character with a lot of love to give and she was an A+ unit. She was getting critical hits with just an iron bow and when I got the Kiss of Death, it was uphill from there.

Characters I would like to note:

Galen: OP ass unit, top 3 in the game imo. He has insane strength and defense and when I promoted him to a shadow knight it was even better. I was so mad that he originally sided with the traitor blades but his arc went crazy. His relationship with Miley was def a core part to this story

Tancred: such a mysterious fella, but he is exactly what I wound image somebody w his life story to be. He was always willing to put himself first. He was extremely OP, especially when I got that Cataclysm tome, he one shot everything in the final chapter

Donnal: I love how he went from somebody who was only drawn to money to becoming a person that helps people. He was so OP, I swore that guy could move anywhere on the map. When I paired him with a longbow and killer bow, he was one shotting left and right, amazing unit.

Gareth: his support convos went so hard. I kept him in my team just because I wanted him to get revenge on Zeddard so badly. Amazing backstory with this character.

Dwalt: Dwalt was a goofy character, and I was rooting for him to end up with Rivkah. But he was great unit wise, great for crits and when I promoted him I gave him the killer bow and it was wraps. Also he was unstoppable with Woundmaker.

Rowan: probably the funniest written character in the game. He is always late to everything but he hits like a freight train. I used him everywhere and gave him the holy axe for the last 3 chapters and he was a machine. He also was extremely tanky.

Alexias: he would have been a much better unit if introduced earlier in the game (you recruit him with like 13 chapters left lol) but when he’s a sage he’s crazy. I also love his interest for poetry and wine and how that’s included in his endgame bio.

Griss: although I didn’t use him much, who doesn’t love a good ol unc. His love for the battle was my favorite part about him.

Harlan: his character development from a rag tag thief to a knight was awesome. I loved how his love for Julia was what caused him to switch to the right side and fight against Fenix. He was also insane with Shadowbane

Julia: the most selfless character ever. Great person with great motives and her ending is quite sad but her selflessness is what moved her to do that.

Hadrian: I really liked this guy, although he joins very late his S rank in light magic came in clutch, and I was sad to see how his story ended.

Elyse: She was OP. She could use any type of magic and shred through anyone after her promo.

Fenix: I didn’t like Fenix character wise, but he was a damn great unit. I ended up giving him Kingslayer for a chapter and he was sick with it. (I ended up giving it to shorn for the last Chapter lmao)

And I gotta say that Chapter 9 and Chapter 18 (I might have those wrong but I’m referring to the escape chapters) are the best in the game. I loved how you split the teams to make it more difficult and it was easier to train various characters. My favorite part tho was how you chose megolovania as the music. That shit had me bumping.

That one chapter where you go to Sophia’s flashback and you play as Zeddard, Forness, Royce, Braggo, Young Tancred, Young Sophia, Tordred, etc. was fire as well. It was a unique spin to traditional fire emblem and I loved being able to play as more characters.

One more thing I would like to highlight is the new classes. Galen’s Shadow Knight and Hadrian’s Light Knight was a crazy good concept and made those two extremely overpowered. I loved seeing another spin to the cavalier promotion instead of just promo to Paladin or Great Knight. I also loved how Edric could use swords and bows, made him dangerous from range. I forgot the name of Rowan’s promoted class, but he was OP. Defense, and a crazy crit rate made him unstoppable. Also, Nayda’s class as a Pegasus mage is a concept that should be used in vanilla FE. Such a good idea for a class. Elyse as a witch is a better twist than a sage, Elyse was an essential character so it makes sense as to why she got a unique class, but I would love to see more of that. I also love how you expanded on the dancer class and gave Elenora the ability to heal and fight, it really expanded on the use of her class. And I love how you nerfed the great knight class just a little, and took away their ability to use swords. Their weapon triangle usage was too OP in vanilla FE8 so I love how you balanced the game out.

Overall, an A+ fire emblem game. Better than Nintendo can do in my opinion. And the plot twist at the very end was absolutely insane, I really hope we can see a sequel some day. Thank you Vorgus for this amazing experience.
