Whenever I head home for the holidays I like to download a couple different romhacks to knock out before I head back to work in the new year, and this year I decided to replay VQ on hard, since my last run was on normal, and was also on a pretty old patch (a cursory glance at my old folders tell me it was 1.18).
In addition, I’d noticed that you were starting up a sequel (which I’ve only now seen has been cancelled unfortunately) which also made me want to replay VQ so I could properly appreciate all the references when I did eventually get around to playing Lengths of Time. (which I still do intend to play despite the fact it’s been cancelled!).
I’m a bit of a sucker for sequels because I tend to get very attached to characters, (which I think is a big reason I enjoyed Sun God’s Wrath so much despite blademaster’s constant disdain for his own original hack!) and I remembered from my original VQ run that I deliberately tried very hard to not lose anybody despite knowing it was a hack intended to be ironmanned simply because I liked so much of the cast, so I was excited for my replay, and it did not disappoint.
While I do remember the big plot points and certain gameplay hooks, a lot of the general design of the maps, smaller scale dialogue quips, and later joining characters were quite fuzzy in my mind. (I also didn’t read the official V2 patch notes, so I was pleasantly surprised upon seeing the new 2-5X as well as being offered a side quest after 3-3!)
Despite hard mode seeming to be a pretty notable step-up in difficulty from my original playthrough, I honestly had a ton of fun replaying the game. It gave me vibes of when I was a kid and playing through FE7/8 on my SP for the umpteenth time after having put the game down for a couple months. Rediscovering old characters and maps I previously enjoyed as well as discovering new quirks that I missed my first time around while also getting to try a new set of characters kept the experience very fresh.
I think one of the biggest things I appreciate about VQ compared to other hacks (and honestly even some mainline games) is the wide berth of experiences I’m offered in both gameplay and story. While some maps do push you to play fast out of necessity, I feel like there are enough chapters that you’re allowed to go at your own pace so that it doesn’t really feel overwhelming, (with maybe the exception of part 3) and the wide array of both solid growth units and powerful pre-promotes really helps to keep things fresh. It’s nice to play a game where I have too many good units to choose from, rather than the opposite.
As far as the story goes, it was honestly better than I remembered as well, though my memory of the story was definitely foggier than my memory of the gameplay. I made a serious effort to read a lot more of the supports and story dialogue much more deliberately, and even sought out specific paired endings to really immerse myself, (largely in preparation for playing Lengths of Time) and was really glad I did. 4-EX was a super cool cherry on top that I really appreciated as well.
The use of side quests to flesh out members of the cast that would otherwise be forgotten remains one of the coolest implementations of gaidens I’ve seen in any game, official or not. The use of these in both VQ and Deity Device really make the cast of characters memorable, and I hope to see more romhacks utilize gaidens in this manner in the future.
Part 3 was definitely the part that I was the most interested in replaying when I first set out. On my initial playthrough, I remember being frustrated at the unavailability of the armory, the shaky hitrates that you were often forced into, and the fact that you don’t really get much of a chance to catch your breath throughout all of part 3, but upon replaying it, (especially after having played a decent amount of hacks in the time between my VQ runs) I find that I really enjoy the experience overall (with the exception of the times that I miss 70-85% attacks I’m forced into taking and have to reset!)
I think my enjoyment with part 3 much more this time around largely has to do with where it’s placed. By the end of part 2 in m replay, I found I was starting to feel overly comfortable with the Storch/TItus army, and part 3 is a huge slap in the face both in terms of gameplay pacing and story narrative that I think is super well done. (the addition of 3-3x really hits hard too for driving home some of the story points).
I’ve got some smaller points that I could go on and on about, (my part 4 army is so cool why must we be together for such a short time!) but I think I’ve exhausted the big talking points I wanted to cover. I do selfishly hope that one day you’ll find the time and motivation to come back and finish Lengths of Time since I’ve grown quite attached to the world you’ve created, but I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to make sacrifices to hobbies and personal interests, and I know how tough it can be, so above all else, I hope you’re able to sort out everything going on in your personal life. While I’ve never been super active about posting in the FEU community, I’ve been a pretty big lurker, and I’ve seen all of the effort you’ve put not into just VQ and LoT, but the community as a whole, so thank you Pandan!
