[FE8] [Complete] Fire Emblem: Vision Quest (v3 by Pushwall - 1-Oct-22)

Not sure if there is a bug report page, so I’ll type here. Sorry if I’m doing things wrong: I’m new to FE Universe.

On chapter 1-4, a pirate destroyed the eastern home. When I flew over there later, however, I was given the option to Visit as if nothing had happened. Presumably this is not working as intended?

Where are all the S rank weapons? I have a good amount of them, but I think I might have missed some and didn’t find any hint towards getting them, though I’m nearly sure I’ve done everything (visiting villages and houses, optional talks, etc). I have the sword, bow, light tome (bless Purge for making it possible), staff, dark tome, and anima tome, so I guess I missed out on the lance and axe- unless they’re obtainable later? I just beat the chapter with the S rank dark tome.

I was also curious about the secret shops. How many are there, and is there a location list? I didn’t find any outside the one on the desert chapter (and only thanks to the map provided here), and since the game really wants you to hoof it I didn’t (sometimes couldn’t) dawdle to search for them. I’m definitely biased since I’m firmly in the “play with serenesforest open” camp, but since a recruitment guide was provided (despite recruitment being pretty straightforward save for maybe Zuzana) I was wondering if it’d be possible to add this type of thing to the Resources tab.

I believe the axe you get by

So far most secrets are hinted in the game via houses, or not skipping the dialogue iirc.

I lost all my save info so I’m restarting from part 4 and it’s still a good mod I have a complaint about 1-10… a certain paladin will kill some green folks before I can reach them if I don’t send a flyer asap which was a bummer.

Thanks, definitely missed that then. No biggie though, I beat the game yesterday so I guess it’s something to keep in mind for another playthrough!

I thought I read everything, but if the lance and axe were hinted at I must have missed them :frowning: guess there was a house I didn’t spot or sth

Hi, just finished this hack and I made an account to say this is the best romhack of FE I’ve played to date. And I’ve played all the other popular ones (Requiem, Crimson Arm, etc.) and this one feels like the most fair and balanced. Nothing felt like it was forced difficulty to add pointless tedium for the sake of a “challenge”. My only small gripe is I feel like a lot of early game units are made near obsolete by the late game units, especially if you use a certain secret shop to buy stat boosts to get em up to max power. The writing was phenomenal and I had an easy time following the plot the whole time. Other hacks tend to get to convoluted and I just lose interest. My one question is the following:

Summary

Does the ending change any based on any supports I get? If I get Hilda + Titus to Rank A support, does she choose to stay at the end? I almost feel like I got the bad ending since Horvath comes back and blackmails Titus. Then Anwen gets brainwashed and things just feel unresolved. Is this all meant to imply a possible sequel? I ask because I want to replay the hack a second time and use different units and I wanna know if anything can be changed so I can work towards it.

I also just noticed checking the supports that a certain someone is missing based on the ending. If I max out his support with a certain mage, does that change anything?

Summary

Helga and Titus’s whole A support ending is Helga leaving and Titus regretting everything, so it doesn’t change anything, not to my knowledge anyway.

Summary

So literally the exact same end. Kind of a letdown but oh well. I really want to know if they intend to make a sequel to this with blackmailed TItus as the villain.

I’ll get around to sharing more around what was intended when I have some time. I have notes written up for what I wanted for the sequel plot that I need to clean up before sharing in public.

Man, this was a rush. A fun hack with innovative principles, unique perspectives, and enough cheese references to make me wish I had charcuterie. I was constantly challenged but enjoyed every chapter and honestly could not specify a time I wanted to stop playing. Thanks for this in a time when a fun game was needed.

Also, I’m a long time lurker on this place but I really appreciate how supportive you are with the others in the community. You always pop in with positive comments and support and that’s some great stuff.

My priorities: achieved

Jokes aside, this is the first time I manage to beat a FE hack. I got to chapter 25 of TLP but it was nowhere near as enjoyable as this- and mind you, I am an unabashed savescummer and turtler, the casual to end all casuals. The fact I enjoyed such a Thou Shalt Not Turtle Ever hack speaks volumes to how well it poses its challenges to the player; I never had to break my head replaying a chapter a million times perfecting every move, and was able to learn and improve at a comfortable pace.

With that out of the way, I am here for the characters and story first and foremost, and this is one hack that really shines in that department (HUGE points for making the support log fully available from the get-go, now I’ve beaten the game I will definitely be making my way through it). I’ve grown to care for the team and their world- something that helped a lot were the little spotlight moments given to the cast.
Obviously not everyone is going to be fundamental, but having scenes featuring Arckady and Vagelis waaay late in the game felt really nice (how soon do the earlygame axeman and archer stop existing in the story in real FEs?). You start with a ragtag team of nobodies that’s ultimately a found family, and you end with that same family still together- it’s very in line with Storch’s character, too. Speaking of everyone (rightfully) brings up Titus’ arc but I really enjoyed Storch’s personal journey, not only is it a fresh outlook for FE (Ike isn’t a noble, but he’s also not a peasant living a mundane farming life) but it’s also really well written. It felt realistic and grounded and was just a delight to read

Speaking of delight, keep up the food talk! Made me feel like I was reading Dungeon Meshi (read: hungry)

Anyway this got too long already so I’ll stop rambling, tldr hack v good thanks for making it

Thanks for making this. I actually stumbled across this by accident while trying to find a different hack but it was worth it!!

My favorite part was getting to take charge of Waluyo’s army. First, Waluyo is amazing and absolutely loved him as a unit. Helps that I’ve always been partial to bows. Second, the rushing to run away was done excellently that I’m going to replay this so I can keep a spare save to continuously replay it.

Outside of Waluyo, my favorites ended up being Vagelis, Anisa, Cashew, and Bosco. I told you I was partial to bows… Speaking of which, having horse/armor effective bows is a really nice touch and were fun to use. However, much more thanks to the Sky Piercers!! Bosco was my EP unit that took the brunt of so, so many enemy advances and proceeded to slay them all. Vagelis was my go-to-early-game unit that ended up getting a lot of speedwings and a few dracoshields to help EP later on. Anisa was my first to promote in Waluyo’s campaign and was too cute to not add her to the main army. Cashew was a fun res tank.

Natsuko was my runner up unit. Kinda a pain to work around her personal skill but amusing challenge as well. I think mine may have been stat blessed a little but worth it. Storch was most pivotal in applying shine barriers as walls…

Everyone else kinda just depended on chapter/needs/whatever was going on. Lera & Tien turned into staff bots. Cassius replaced Titus as my dark mage and provided summoning meat shields. Sarka is a goddess for midgame but later was replaced by Stina (I liked Stina).

Really loved Esfir and Titus from a story perspective. Kinda wished there was some arms scrolls as some of my faves struggled with getting to S ranks. Tien couldn’t get out of having to heal… I might also need multiple Borjchats…

Once again, it was quite enjoyable and thank to you and all those who helped you out!

Just got to 3-1 on my 2nd ironman HM run, thought dump

This time, knowing what’s coming, I couldn’t help but want act 2 to last longer  It’s so good!

Sort of thinking out loud about how shrinking the party back down to a small set of new characters half or further through the game works out (here & in general). Its a useful plot device and I figure for a game this long, it may be necessary to draw it out. I like how when it was done here, the units you get are mostly classes you haven’t used up to this point, keeps it fresh. I’m sure this was intentional since FE and honestly most games in general run out of new mechanics & just “stuff” to keep it interesting into the mid-late game (see: me never finishing 80% of final fantasy games).

Though I think this presents a difficult situation for replay value. I don’t feel particularly excited about replaying these first few chapters in act 3, thinking about why. Not because of the maps/design or anything, but because I know I’ll probably have to play them the exact same way as the first time. Having limited options in load-out while keeping the difficulty curve consistent with being this far in the game, it doesn’t feel like there is much room for error or having it go any differently than it did the first time. Chapters turn into a sort of prescribed set of steps to complete. The only way I could think of avoiding this would be like, providing more than a full party to begin with, so theres at least some decision making.

Anyways, not meant as a criticism, more observation

Random unit thoughts thus far on playthru 2:

Onisim: So solid once again. Best staff user IMO, possibly one of the best characters in the game.
Vagelis: His stats both times have been pretty average, but still ends up an MVP
Lera: died early 1st run, insane this run
Larisa: died early 1st run, insane this run, parked on terrain is basically invincible
Duck: was MVP first run, kinda average this time
Honeydew: She was poppin’ off crazy high speed & STR but it felt inevitable she’d get squashed, she did
Naia: can’t tell if really good or I’m just babying the myrmidon as always, turning out avg this time even w/ Kaya from recruitment + boosters
Bosco: This guy turned out really good, but tbf the female solider you get soon after Bosco seems better, especially considering the 25 str cap.
Hokulani: Can’t hit anything!! Is this what I get for losing all the other fliers?
Arckady/Marlen/Ruslan/pirate: Can’t keep these guys alive can I

I think Sarka & Rakkous are maybe the best prepromotes?

I just restarted your hack for the 4th time sir… I broke my old phone and started again twice so far to part 3 and broke my new phone midway through part 2 and I e Yet to beat your game and I love it and hate it… Nazar could use some TLC on map 1-7 the graveyard shift as the island could be assaulted by an amphibian force but sadly he cannot climb cliffs. It sounded tactical and I was disappointed to be unable to. Also why does it show him with two axes in map but one in battle? Idk maybe I’m just flipping out over nothing.

Whenever I head home for the holidays I like to download a couple different romhacks to knock out before I head back to work in the new year, and this year I decided to replay VQ on hard, since my last run was on normal, and was also on a pretty old patch (a cursory glance at my old folders tell me it was 1.18).

In addition, I’d noticed that you were starting up a sequel (which I’ve only now seen has been cancelled unfortunately) which also made me want to replay VQ so I could properly appreciate all the references when I did eventually get around to playing Lengths of Time. (which I still do intend to play despite the fact it’s been cancelled!).

I’m a bit of a sucker for sequels because I tend to get very attached to characters, (which I think is a big reason I enjoyed Sun God’s Wrath so much despite blademaster’s constant disdain for his own original hack!) and I remembered from my original VQ run that I deliberately tried very hard to not lose anybody despite knowing it was a hack intended to be ironmanned simply because I liked so much of the cast, so I was excited for my replay, and it did not disappoint.

While I do remember the big plot points and certain gameplay hooks, a lot of the general design of the maps, smaller scale dialogue quips, and later joining characters were quite fuzzy in my mind. (I also didn’t read the official V2 patch notes, so I was pleasantly surprised upon seeing the new 2-5X as well as being offered a side quest after 3-3!)

Despite hard mode seeming to be a pretty notable step-up in difficulty from my original playthrough, I honestly had a ton of fun replaying the game. It gave me vibes of when I was a kid and playing through FE7/8 on my SP for the umpteenth time after having put the game down for a couple months. Rediscovering old characters and maps I previously enjoyed as well as discovering new quirks that I missed my first time around while also getting to try a new set of characters kept the experience very fresh.

I think one of the biggest things I appreciate about VQ compared to other hacks (and honestly even some mainline games) is the wide berth of experiences I’m offered in both gameplay and story. While some maps do push you to play fast out of necessity, I feel like there are enough chapters that you’re allowed to go at your own pace so that it doesn’t really feel overwhelming, (with maybe the exception of part 3) and the wide array of both solid growth units and powerful pre-promotes really helps to keep things fresh. It’s nice to play a game where I have too many good units to choose from, rather than the opposite.

As far as the story goes, it was honestly better than I remembered as well, though my memory of the story was definitely foggier than my memory of the gameplay. I made a serious effort to read a lot more of the supports and story dialogue much more deliberately, and even sought out specific paired endings to really immerse myself, (largely in preparation for playing Lengths of Time) and was really glad I did. 4-EX was a super cool cherry on top that I really appreciated as well.

The use of side quests to flesh out members of the cast that would otherwise be forgotten remains one of the coolest implementations of gaidens I’ve seen in any game, official or not. The use of these in both VQ and Deity Device really make the cast of characters memorable, and I hope to see more romhacks utilize gaidens in this manner in the future.

Part 3 was definitely the part that I was the most interested in replaying when I first set out. On my initial playthrough, I remember being frustrated at the unavailability of the armory, the shaky hitrates that you were often forced into, and the fact that you don’t really get much of a chance to catch your breath throughout all of part 3, but upon replaying it, (especially after having played a decent amount of hacks in the time between my VQ runs) I find that I really enjoy the experience overall (with the exception of the times that I miss 70-85% attacks I’m forced into taking and have to reset!)

I think my enjoyment with part 3 much more this time around largely has to do with where it’s placed. By the end of part 2 in m replay, I found I was starting to feel overly comfortable with the Storch/TItus army, and part 3 is a huge slap in the face both in terms of gameplay pacing and story narrative that I think is super well done. (the addition of 3-3x really hits hard too for driving home some of the story points).

I’ve got some smaller points that I could go on and on about, (my part 4 army is so cool why must we be together for such a short time!) but I think I’ve exhausted the big talking points I wanted to cover. I do selfishly hope that one day you’ll find the time and motivation to come back and finish Lengths of Time since I’ve grown quite attached to the world you’ve created, but I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to make sacrifices to hobbies and personal interests, and I know how tough it can be, so above all else, I hope you’re able to sort out everything going on in your personal life. While I’ve never been super active about posting in the FEU community, I’ve been a pretty big lurker, and I’ve seen all of the effort you’ve put not into just VQ and LoT, but the community as a whole, so thank you Pandan!

I really loved Vision Quest! The story, the cast, the game itself. It became a very good inspiration to my book, i would like to have a Titus-like in my story. I would love too to have the soundtrack in some way. I find out that you send the source codes, but i would like to listen to the tracks in their glory, so could you share them in MP3 format, Pandan? I’m really sorry that Lengths of Time get canceled, but if you someday restart the project and need help with the story, i would be glad to help in any way i can. At last, thanks for all, Pandan!

Dissing everything else is fine, but dissing the recipes? That’s too much man.

Edit: Glad the recipes are no longer under fire.
