[FE8][Complete] Fire Emblem: The Four Kings (4/11/24 Update: Now With Weapon Reversal!)

Had to make a quick update to the Weapon Reversal patch, fixing the chapter 9 boss and Dorian’s caps. The patch link has been updated in the main post. Enjoy!

i believe i have the most updated one “fe four kings complete with chapter 8 bugfix” the one i downloaded and played on until i hit that chapter i used VBA and MBA and same result with both but with mba i get a error code and then it crashes on me

That doesn’t sound like it’s the final patch. Try redownloading the patch in the main post. It’s the first download link, dated November 4th 2021. You can patch that to a clean FE8 rom and try transferring your save file over to it.

Okay ill do that, transfering save data is juat rewriting the save data name to the new rom name right?

Yeah. I know emulators like mGBA also have a function to import a save file if you need to.

Recently got done with this one, and man those final few chapters were great. Usually I find these games tend to lose steam at the end, but the gimmicks really kept things fresh, I think the final map might be the best “last boss” map I’ve played in any fire emblem game.

I got frustrated a lot while playing this, due to the “lock and key” unit design, but it was well worth pushing through those momentary annoyances, this was overall great.

I played this hack off of a recommendation. I’ve heard a lot of things about it (good and bad), but I wanted to get my own impression of it.

Finished it within a week and a half. Overall, fun experience. Felt compelled to give a review here, giving general thoughts.

Thanks for making this.

Story/Supports

The plot…certainly exists.
Honestly, the story isn’t the strongest. It has its moments, but I wasn’t very impressed by how it handled the characters and certain plot beats. I honestly liked Walter a decent amount despite his childish nature, but I felt some of his plot beats were forced, like the fight and development from sparring with Ladon or even getting his ships stolen and remarking “this wouldn’t have happened if Lionel was here” (yes it f**king would have). I actually found his relationship with Ava quite wholesome, but it wasn’t very deep all things considered. Lionel, in contrast, had a slightly more compelling arc even if I thought he was insufferable in the beginning. It did feel a bit unnatural when it came to finally resolving the conflict with Walter though; part of me wanted a deeper dive into his insecure nature being forced up to the surface.

The side characters felt stronger to me on a personal narrative sense. Zoe’s mini-arc was an absolute favorite, Jack + Nicole’s support sequence made me laugh, and Shelby + Lydia’s A support resonated a lot with me. I just wish they were all a bit more fleshed out I guess? I felt really sad that the characterization of everyone was intentionally simplified, even when it came to their deeper support chains.

I will say one thing though: every one of these characters gives the feeling of being potentially likeable. That’s probably why I have all these grievances, because I WANT them to be more than just my first impressions. It wasn’t necessarily tapped into in this game, but the bones are there. And maybe it’s asking a lot out of what seems to be a mainly gameplay driven experience, but I would have been so happy if there was more.

6.5/10, I will note as a sibling myself the squabbles between them hit a bit close to home. :sob:

Gameplay

The intended difficulty is definitely “hard”, jeezus.
Early maps are probably the most frustrating, but as you grow your army the later ones become more engaging. Surprisingly, I think it’s the later chapters where this game shines, even if it remains just as difficult as before.

Your army feels horribly weak most of the time, and this doesn’t change until your lords reach promotion. Despite it all, there’s a charm in that, fitting the puzzle pieces to squeeze the weird pockets of strength each character has and create absolute powerhouses. Bradley may have been an objectively god-awful Great Knight rendition, but his 2-3 range lance made him one of the most fun characters I’ve ever used. Shaun has no Str, but man can he use magic blades like no one else. Locritus gets one-rounded by everything in existence, but at least he can nuke any flier and horse that comes within range. This design lends itself to creating a really engaging mid-to-late game experience, something that I really appreciated going into some of the best designed endgame chapters I’ve played.

9.5/10, Skill and Luck boosts are still a bit expensive for my liking. Also f**k siege staves, there are SO MANY GOD D-

Aesthetics/Music

No crazy custom animations, character PFPs were fairly well designed. Level aesthetics were normal, though Teril’s recruitment level had the longest stairway I’ve ever seen since the Last Promise :joy:.

Sonic Advance 3 is an underrated gem, please keep using their music. That promotion tune gave me the biggest blast of nostalgia when I first heard it.
8/10, Everybody’s Super Sonic Racing~ :notes:

Glorified Halberdier. Made sure hit rates were above 80%.

I really wish her animations were better. Sick stat spread, I wish she had more HP.

Hector-clone will do Hector things. My most competent Axe user.

My Thief turned into Sethos, help.
Also wdym I can’t use Restrainer anymore??? :upside_down_face:

If he can hit, he can crit. No wonder he’s going into the sequel.

10 Str is all I need (pls add magical lances :sob:)

…why is your Defense higher than your Res???
Disappointing, but Crits when he needs to.

Why is my staff bot one of my best units??

Peak character. No wonder’s she’s Dante’s sister.

Least skillful swordmaster. At least he can Brave Sword. :+1:

I barely raised her, and somehow she’s still one of my better units.

Who needs Darklight when you got aura? (i’m sorry)

The Wall. I’m surprised he even got this far.

You know, they should make a winged Knight class. Just saying.

You know why she’s here.

You know why he’s here.

Peak unit. Started from the bottom, rose to the top. (please make cav defense have a higher cap :sob:)

Krash, I think you got this guy’s class wrong. He’s clearly a mage.

Hello there! I started playing this game for the first time. I just finished ch 8 in what I assume to be unintentional.

Ch 8 is a prison break which is i find fun. I like FE5 prison break chapters as well. However, after I used an unlock staff on the center right door, the game decided to transition to the chapter end cutscene. I was ironmanning this game and was sorely disappointed when that bug occurred that I could not get to the chest or all of the exp in the chapter.

I’ve seen that happen sporadically before and I have no idea what causes it, so sorry about that. I think you’re totally valid to replay this chapter, assuming you didn’t already save over it. Or you can just cheat in the chest content (a guiding ring). Thankfully this map is pretty light on exp, since most of the enemies are the ones chasing you out which grant no exp, so you didn’t miss too much in that regard. Though I wouldn’t exactly recommend blind ironmanning this game… or any FE game, really.

I already hard committed in ironmanning and saved over the ch 8 save data. Besides, I find enjoyment in letting things play out, no matter who dies or what I missed. Makes the experience totally unique if certain people are missing or dead, and I had to compensate by training less than ideal units. Even if I were to reset to the beginning when I game over, the journey of training new units, losing them, and getting as far as I can with the cards I am dealt is a core reason I still play FE.

Hey hey!!! Your game/romhack looks dope, I was just wondering: how many of those paired endings are romantic? I’m a shipper, I had to ask lmao.

Only a few of these are actually romantic. Walter/Ava, Chase/Lydia, Zoe/Vin, Harriet/Candace, and Jeremy/Sarah (though these two are already married to begin with, more of a technicality).

Ah, gotcha! Awww, so Locritus/Jack ain’t romantic? Lol, ah well! I did read that his ending with Nicole is fun and involves something fun with the king, hahahaha! Thanks for letting me know! Looking forward to giving your romhack a go!

Just started the game, and idk what’s wrong, but the save menu doesn’t save the game? It goes No Data → No Data, I’m on MyBoy(Android), if that has to do anything with it.

This sounds like an emulator issue. Maybe try updating your emulator or using a different one? There’s also Retroarch on android.
