[FE8][Complete] Fire Emblem: Emulation Theory (SUPER DELUXE)

Hi, which emulator are you using? Since mine uses .sav, I need to donwload the one you’re using.

Yes, this was a problem before, but I thought I fixed it. Shinryu managed to get to Void 4, so either your problem has a solution or something wrong happened in your save state. Either way I will make sure that you can keep playing.

mGBA for me

Heya, I’ve noticed you’ve been having a lot of bug reports coming in, I recommend you playtest with MGBA or No$GBA, they much more accurately emulate GBA hardware while VBA will sometimes fix or change up any code that may cause a crash or bug.
Sorry if you’ve heard this already.

This hack looks very interesting, will definitely add it to the list of many hacks I still need to play.

I appreciate the recommendation! There are some errors that the VBA version do not have, but most of those glitches and softlocks are my fault. It’s my first full-on hack (and a complicated one), so don’t worry about those, it’s not the engine’s fault. Right now I’m on vacation, so I can fix the last problem.

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but if this hack is riddled with bugs and glitches that prevent it from being completed (which can only be done through an escamotage), why is it considered completed? Rather, it’s a WIP version: that other definition is clearly misleading.
As for me, the plot is certainly interesting and original and I will only play it when the product will be finished and finalized.

nah man, incomplete work can be a complete project, just look at sonic boom

Incomplete work/complete project…
Hmmm… What is this, a play on words?
And “sonic boom” what would that be?.. reminds me of a certain shot in Street Fighter 2…

Another way to look at it is, " it might be complete, but that doesn’t mean it’s done."

I was able to beat this one a while back and can’t attest to it now, but some of the mid map objective swapping is the only real reason some of this is so finicky.

I used “(Completed)” in the title because most posts have the number of chapters aviable during its current patch, so it’s there to show that the hack’s story is complete and you can (technically) play every single chapter. Of course it’s a broken mess and I need to fix it. Wether its a “complete project” or not depends on your definition of complete.
Right now I’m only fixing glitches that are being reported. I’m not playtesting anymore because I’ve played it enough times and I’m moving on.

Yes. The chapters with the most bugs are the ones where you change map or with multiple conditions. Also the hack as a whole has a broken/unfinished feeling (chapter titles not displaying correctly, camera errors, my english, slight visual errors), which is a shame but I struggle a lot to fix. Some of the events are now 3-4 years old and I’m still learning. That’s not an excuse, of course, and if you don’t want to play such a mess you don’t have to. Just a heads up: that broken feeling is not going away, and the game will (most likely) always be like that. Hopefully in a few days a new patch will come out fixing the chapter 7 thing.

That’s why I used the phrase i did.

Honestly though, Other then those seize snafus I do actually remember having quite a bit of fun with this hack. Granted its also responsible for forcing me to actually try to figure out the FEBuilder which was a process.

As per the “broken/unfinished” thing, you could actually say most of that can be explained within the story itself. Considering some of the plot points are basically meta humor.

I’m still not sure if athos’ animations were supposed to be broken or not.

“it’s not a bug, it’s a feature”

Uh oh

They play, he just glitches a little, considering you first see them after he goes mental i figured it worked just fine.

It’s patch day/night! This one involves various lategame bug fixes and some balances to the units.
Spoilers down below

Bug fixes!
  • Now (most) chapters will display their names instead of Magvel’s locations. This one might work or not some times, it’s a surprise.

  • Fixed some text issues and grammar errors in lategame dialogue
  • Chapter 21: Showdown.
You can now access Chapter 21x: The Underground if the conditions are met

Fado’s stats were higher than what was intended.
    Changed the Dragon’s spawn turn:
1 Dragon will spawn on turn 3

  • Chapter 25x: New World
Enemies’ stats were higher than what was intended.

Item and units balances!

Units

I heard and experienced that the units are too squishy. I won’t add them any more defense, so I gave them tiny boost to their HP growths (and even gave some of them a boost on their bases). This will not be a significant change, but I hope it changes something.

% means growth, no % means base stats

  • Eirika: -10% luck (60%-50%), +5% HP (50%-55%)
  • Nino: +15% HP (30%-45%) +3 HP (18-21)
  • Dorcas: +15% HP (50%-65%)
  • Heath: +5% HP (55%-60%)
  • Saul: +5% HP (45%-50%) -5% MGC (50%-45%)
  • Percival: +5% HP (65%-70%) +5% DEF (45%-50%)
  • Sue: +10% HP (45%-55%) +2 HP (24-26)
  • Ephraim: +10% HP (50%-60%) -5% STR (55%-50%) -5% RES (35%-30%) shifting his stats to make him more tanky in exchange for a bit of strenght and magical resistance.
  • Forde: +5% STR (40%-45%) +10% HP (50%-60%)
  • Kyle: +5% DEF (45%-50%)
  • Marisa: +3 HP (22-25) +10% HP (50%-60%)
  • Klein: -5% STR (35%-30%) -1 STR (14-13) he’s good. Maybe too much, but this change won’t do much to him
  • Tate: +10% HP (45%-55%)
  • Farina: +3 STR (10-13) +2 SPD (14-16) +6 LCK (10-16) +5% MGC (45%-50%) More luck means more chances to proc her ability
  • Dart: +10% STR (40%-50%) +15% HP (55%-70%)
  • Franz: +5% HP (45%-50%)
  • Lyon: +3 SKL (10-13) +3 SPD (9-12) +4 DEF (10-14) +3 RES (18-21) +5 MGC (18-23) +3 LVLS (14-17) -20% HP (60%-40%) +10% MGC (40%-50%) -40% DEF (50%-10%)
  • Brenya: +70% MGC (0%-70%) My mistake, she didn’t have any growth at all

Items

  • The Fire Emblem now works, but gives you +3 Strenght instead of +3 Magic
  • Luna now has FE7 stats (95 hit, 20 crit, 35 uses) (Athos always uses Luna in events because of the meme around him being able to oneshot the final boss with it, but it didn’t make sense if he wielded the weak version)
  • Reduced LightForged Blade and lance’s cost to 2000 and their uses from 50 to 40 (Eirika’s sword still has 45 uses)

Classic and Pain Mode were updated to the current patch

I finished it!(with a bit of help along the way from Syva…) Really enjoyed the hack though I don’t know when I’ll go back for a second round. Link to my team from the Void maps below.

A knight with 0 crit somehow crited my Nino to death with a javelin in Chapter 5, classic version. 10/10.

what. I don’t even know how is that possible or where to start looking to fix it

I am pretty sure the knight had 2 crit chance and Nino had 2 luck so I don’t know what happened. Who knows?
By the way, I’m having fun so far. Story is cool, dialogue is funny, Dorcas have a decent speed growth and multiple objectives within a chapter is really interesting.

@RecursiveBow
On chapter 15 1 of my units just disapeared, whats going on lol? (he didnt die)

Hes the priest u get at chapter 4 with light+staff, i got him to lv 20 then promoted him and now hes gone at chapter 15.

Also so far some bugs :

  • Chapter 4 when u kill 1 boss u get stuck so i used FEBuilder to pass it.
  • Chapter 7 after boss died crash so i picked the skip option at start.
  • Chapter 18 another bug when on turn 7 game hangs, had to skip event with FEBuilder

Usin mGBA 0.9.3.

after many tries (bugs) before i left this hack (hate leaving things unfinished) i came back since i saw many updates fixing this but its still very finicky ?

Edit: i give up, even with FEBuilder i cant complete this hack, ty anyways
The story was pretty unique!

This is the last patch for Emulation Theory! The link is updated.
0% Growths and Classic Mode are still not updated but they will, soon.

Bug Fixes / General changes
  • Fixed That error in chapter 7
  • Allegedly fixed the bug in chapter 13-15 that made Saul disappear.
  • Changed a small, but important event in the prologue. This change carries on to chapter 14.
  • Changed chapter 19’s name to “Scouring”, in a rather embarrassing gramar error
  • Changed Void 4’s starting event in a way that makes it clear what you can do.
  • Severely nerfed Epilogue’s enemy stats.
  • Sue now properly promotes to Female Ranger.

Balance changes

All numbers are in “%”, referring to growth rates.

  • Heath: +5% DEF.
  • Pedro: +10% DEF.
  • Gerik: +5% STR, +10% SKL, +5% DEF.

Will there be a Sequel?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: (Spoilers)

First of all, there’s just not that much to do to make a brand new game with this idea. Sure, there were some thing that I left out and would love to use, specially the Faceless Morphs, but there’s a thing about Meta humor, a resource that this hack uses a lot: either it gets boring after a while, or you scale it to a point where you just can’t make a story anymore. Meta elements can be used to generate “shock” to the player, but doing the same thing twice isn’t as impressive anymore, so in a game whose most important gimmick is its meta humor, you have to make it bigger each and every time.
By the end of the game, things got out of hand so quickly that I just painted myself into a corner. What can I do now? It’s really hard to make a follow up without it making negative sense, scaling the meta humor to the point where it’s just really cringeworthy, or both at the same time. That’s not to say that I don’t like the hack, I’m proud of it, even with all its (many) flaws.

There are more bugs / the game’s still unpolished. Why not continue to fix it?

Short answer: game’s gonna be like that unless I port it to another clean hack, and lmao good luck with that.

Long Answer:

I started making this hack in 2018. Back then I was 14 years old, so I was a stupid kid throwing random stuff at a rom. Back then I did things that kinda damaged the rom as a whole in a few areas, most importantly Camera and fading. I also don’t have all the time in the world, and trying to fix things can get really frustrating. I’m really sorry for everyone that had issues in regarding of this aspect of the game. If there’s another game breaking bug or softlock, I’ll gladly fix it. I’ll just not work on this hack anymore.

Will you do another hack?

Short answer: Most likely, yes and soon.

Long answer:

I’ve been working on another hack since the beggining of this year. I could’ve released a demo a while ago, but college is taking most of my time and I also want to actually write stories, those that don’t get softlocked for stupid reasons. That project will see the light of day soon, I hope.

Thank you all for everything! It’s been one full year since I completed this hack, and I love that some of you liked it. Hope I see you soon!

Ah, I love some good foreshadowing.

Hello! I am completely remaking Fire Emblem: Emulation Theory from the ground up. Making it super deluxe, like the album the title is inspired from.

I wanted to have the game ready for FEE3. I really wanted to. But I am at the most complicated semester of my career and have negative time each day.

Anyways, I’m announcing this today because FEE3’s schedule came out and I am going to participate in it! I had tons of fun making this year’s submission, and I hope you’ll like it once it comes out November 5th

Emulation Theory - SUPER DELUXE

This hack’s going to be a full rework, changing every single aspect of it. It’s turning out amazing, and I can’t wait to finish it! Here’s a few noteworthy things about the remake:

  • Every single dialogue is being rewritten. I know the grammar was a huge issue in the 2021 release, so I’m making sure to leave no horrors from that version by completely rewriting all the story. Most of it remains the same, perhaps with better wording or other jokes.
  • Every single cutscene will get reworked. Specially the first chapters have a lot of broken scenes; weird music choice, fades that don’t work, wrong camera angles… So again, I’m working on it.
  • Unit and class rebalance. The original hack diverged in its class system when compared to vanilla. It made some arguably good decisions (wyvern knights should NOT wield only lances), but some horrible ones for the sake of balance. I aim to give every single unit a feeling akin to vanilla, but improved.

Paladin Seth… finally…

  • Every chapter gets a touchup! This varies from chapter to chapter, of course. Some of them get just a few cosmetic changes, but there’s a lot of changed gimmicks and layouts, and even a few complete reworks. For example, two of the most broken maps in the 2021 original release, chapter 4 and 6, got their original gimmicks back and working properly!
Most importantly, the optional chapters are now proper chapters and not just filler maps. They’re also no longer optional since the objectives to get them were not interesting.
  • A better feel of the hack as a whole. I’m working to make you feel like you’re going through all three games while playing. A lot of small changes were made to help with this feel: the music choice for the cutscenes, the backgrounds… Even the soldiers!
At the same time, the contrast between Magvel’s portraits and Elibe’s wasn’t something nice for the eyes, so I’m normalising and making everyone have FE8’s (better) colour scheme!

You know this nothing like canon FE6. Not because of the Skill System or the stat screen being Sacred Stone’s, but because Dorothy is being used

I have a few things I want to add before leaving.

I need feedback! I made a forms for people to fill and help me with several aspects of the game (from writing to gameplay balance to other decisions…). There’s a lot of items in the form, but I made them all optional so you can just not answer anything you don’t feel confident about or don’t remember. All but the first question, of course, which is if you played the game or not. Please, if you want to give feedback or check some marks, give it a try!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe5S58oHAKDTlizpi2u3f0kRvjtLh-43SjOhVZJZPqHminPoA/viewform

If you want to help me make this hack, send me a DM over Discord (or PM here in FEU) and I can give you an early access version of the game for you to try! Currently, I’m working on chapter 11, and I want to have a demo up to chapter 15 for FEE3 to make public.

Thank you for reading! See you in the FEE3!

(Regarding my other hack: Crimson Eclipse entered a hiatus due to severe story block. I might change the campaign altogether. Work on The Tales of The Conquerors will resume after Emulation Theory (SUPER DELUXE) is completely done)
