[COMPLETE] The Unbroken Thread (Open World, Full Length)

Fantastic, thank you for the assistance. My weekly question is kinda a weird one: What is Global Leadership supposed to do? Mitzi has given it to me twice now, and it looks like it does… nothing?

Urgh, that’s a big. It crops up every time I think I’ve thoroughly crushed it. Thanks for reporting, we will look into it!

Hey KD, long-time feuniverse lurker, finally posting to share praise first, at such a great game! And secondly ask, as a developer myself, how I could go about hosting my LT Maker game on web? I’m making a small project for friends, and for accessibility’s sake, I’d like to be able to send a link for them to play, instead of a .exe.

A lot of my game dev in the past has been using engines like Unity, so choosing export options has rarely been an issue. But for making an SRPG, I’ve really liked the experience of LTMaker. I see out-of-the-box LTMaker doesn’t have a web export option, and I was considering implementing one myself, or like a Godot-runtime, but I saw on the LTMaker showcase that you have a browser-playable version of The Unbroken Thread!! I was wondering if you have a repo or any notes I could reference for making my game web-playable. Thanks a bunch!

Hello! Thank you for the kind words!

I would first recommend joining the LT discord. A couple of people have hosted games online (sigmaraven beng the other that comes to mind). I published this using a webdev branch you can find here: Files · openworldgamebranch_webdev · KD / lt-maker · GitLab

Because I do a lot of engine hacks, both for this project and my upcoming project I’ve had a (projectname) and (projectname)_webdev branch, and just merged (projectname) into the webdev branch as needed.

Thanks! Looking through this is a huge help, also just as a Python deep-dive. I’ve also joined the Discord, hoping to share progress soon

I’ve been really enjoying the game but I’ve gotten completely stuck at Lachesis’ shrine. I just always get completely overwhelmed by the enemies rushing me, and by the time I deal with the center boss, I get overwhelmed by the mage knight reinforcements. How did other people beat this map.

how do i recruit Lady Jane?

You have to talk to her twice with Simon, She’ll refuse the first time but will join the second.

Sorry for the late response! When SP and I have played it we’ve noticed the best strat is to focus on one of the sides. From there we’ll full send with Simon + dance to end the map ASAP.

Push to one side and play fast, got it. do you also have any advice for Clotho’s the first boss just being right there at the entrance makes it pretty hard to maneuver and I haven’t seemed to figure out the weakness for their invincibility

thank you so much

is there other unit you can support instead of Euclid?

Yep! Melodie is also an option. You need to bring her to a set number of missions first

Man i loved this game, so as a first for me i have written a review

Fair warnings, you are now threading on spoiler infested waters:

The unbroken threadview

The poise system was really good, it genuinelly conributed to a completelly unique experience amongst the over a hundred romhacks and fangames i’ve played,
i appreciate slower games with longer times to kill and it provided this in spades throughout the game, altough once i adquired a few effective weapons and
started forging others it did get overshadow by one round kills even so it remained relevant all throughout the game.

The limited inventory and lack of convoy access during a map led to some unique decisions throughout the game, altough not all of them good, most staves having so few uses meant you couldn’t really afford to carry the stronger and more limited ones to most battles, 95% of my staff usage was heal staves, the remaining 5% divided amonst freeze, cripple, enfeeble and a single use of silence.

The Difficulty started feeling just right, specially when you wanted to get all the side objectives and loot within a map, however it was quickly outpaced by the amount of power available to the player, going from a game where you struggle to kill some enemies so you have to keep leaving poise broken enemies alive to deal with the others in the group, to one where you race with yourself to see how fast you can destroy an entire group without thinking much about it beyond doing enough damage and having good hitrates, Furthermore the final stretch of the game, the shrines, morryssey’s rise and the very last level felt way too
easy compared to what came before, with the exception of Athropos’ shrine which was just perfect in terms of difficulty.

Accessories were pretty good, specially once you obtained the the more interesting ones like the old talisman, limiting them based on your magic stat was interesting, however having a requirement of 7 magic for the growth boosting ones felt a bit bad since you’d want them much earlier on than that for most characters.

Overall the open world was okay, not my favorite as it functioned mainly as a level select screen and kept important mechanics such as shops and the blacksmith behind loading screens, but i can see something like it being done much, much better in future projects, specially should your progress across the map lead to more interesting decisions, time limits such as “save x town within x battles” could be fun little challenges, where you’d either arrive in time to save a town and get a reward, or too late only to find ruins.

The loyalty system was really fun and the player would have a clear insentive to use it once they realize that not only do the relevant characters get stronger, either through skills or items, but that these can unlock entire chapters worth of gameplay for the player, my only pet peeve would be a lack of a progress bar for those which require the unit being deployed in a number of chapters, there are a limited number of maps in the game so without a rotation of the entire cast throughout different deployments one could easily run out chances to grow their loyalty.
As an aside on the prior point Boudeca’s loyalty requirement is extremely unclear “Talk to her on morrisey castle” does not include the fact you need to recruit certain characters first as well as go in and out of the castle until the event is done and you unlock her map.

Mitzi is divisive for me, her personal skill once unlocked is absurdly powerful, however at first glance she is several times Kajal’s inferior unit, her loyalty not requiring deployment meant i did not use her until i unlocked said skill, furthermore her unique mechanic, that of finding skill manuals for the party, while incredibly powerful does need a few bug fixes as i’ve mentioned before.

The forge system, i adored the forge system, altough i do have some pointers for it:

  • I would have loved to see a few more unique materials (triangle reversals, increased range at a penalty, weight reduction, etc)
  • Utilizing the exact same material for an upgrade no matter how many times you do it means it is optimal to interact with the system as little as possible
early on, maybe upgrading some prfs and effective weapons but otherwise leaving it be until stronger weapons show up, by the same token if you use it too early as i did you’ll eventually get cool weapons such as braves that would otherwise be amazing finds but through this system you could have invested so much in
earlier weapons that these are not really wanted, a good fix for this issue could be tiering your upgrade materials (i.e: Damage material I, Damage material II, etc) so that after an upgrade or two the weapon requires the next in line, that way players get the chance and the benefit of investing in a much wider
variety of weapons than they otherwise could or should.

As for a few more thoughts on specific units:

Charrioteers: they are fun, their gimmick is nice, their movement is way too low for most maps despite it being on the double digits, 80% of the time if not more they move less tiles than a unit with half as much MOV, giving them a point or two in this would be helpful and give them more of a niche.

Monsters: The lack of tradeable weapons for them, while making sense, leaves them a little too underpowered compared to the average unit, their niche for destroying enemy mages lets them stay relevant but they could use a little more spice.

Luther: great unit, very helpful early on, the game does not support his gimmick past the mid game so he and the bench will be very well aquainted, give his axe a lower con requirement if you are going to keep him at 5 con, that way he can atleast get a forge or two, there are many, many, MANY better replacements for it throughout the game, overall jeigan/jeigan.

Simon: While a weak unit if you do not interact with the poise system he can become your designated kill stealer thanks to his prf, meaning he needs to depend on others throughout the game which fits nicely with some of the themes, however, the combination of his sheer availability and the afforementioned gimmick
means he’ll quickly outlevel everything and everyone at an absurd speed, my Simon was level capped more than 10 chapters before the end of the game, and he never slowed down after that, i had to give him a dance book so he’d share some of the glory with the rest of the cast, the lord is always hard to balance,
specially when forced deployed to such an absolute degree, but i think he’s fine.

Overall a great game that leaves lots of room for improvement, i am super looking forward to your future projects,

Love, your local gay weirdo.

Tl;Dr i can’t recommend this game enough for anyone who’d like to see a different approach to a fire emblem game, alongside it’s own unique systems and ideas, 10/10 would commit heresy again.

Hey KD, really enjoying the game so far. Quick questions for you

How exactly does Steal work? I can’t seem to use it even when SPD>enemySPD & CON>WT, does it only work on “Items” as in the bottom two slots, or does it simply not work on equipped weapons?
A: Does not work on equipped weapons.

Simon using his PRF with +1 Damage Forge (Total 6 MT) was only dealing 8 damage to Axe Pirates. Shouldn’t this be 9? Does the +50% damage only apply to base damage (5/2 rounded down = 2, 6+2=8)? Maybe I’m misinterpreting the calcs, not used to them yet.
A: Damage from weapon triangle is a flat +2, only Stagger is 1.5x

EDIT: Figured it out. added answers

Hey KD, another question

Is it intended to be able to Steal the Cyclone Tome in Arena 3? If you grind/booster up to CON 20 on Lupus, equip the Constitution Ring for +1, and then have Lyon use up the tome, he’ll equip the Fimbulvetr and the Cyclone will become stealable, right?
I haven’t tried it yet, and before I go around using it and risking trivializing the game I want to see if this is within developer intentions. I could see it being okay because the tome is only 5-use but I wanted to double check.
