So, since Tezuka_Yamigami mentioned it, I decided to check how would your Kogasa look ingame. And, well, I’ve got bad news.
Before we even get to the part of whether it does fit or not (spoiler: it doesn’t), I have to point out that the image you’ve provided must have been a .jpeg at some point. Why do I say this?
In this image I replaced your background color with white. As you may notice, there are some remains of the previous background. The reason why these pixels remain is because, in truth, they are a different color from the previous background. And, by that, I mean that the previous background was rgb(119, 180, 169) and these pixels are things like rgb(118, 179, 168) or rgb(116, 175, 164).
And it is not an issue exclusive of the background:
Here I did the same for the umbrella, and you can see how it happens again.
By curiosity, I used an online tool to extract the palette and… it detected 219 colors. If you take into account that a portrait it’s supposed to have 15 colors + background at most, I assume you’ll see the issue. I included the list of said colors, in case you’re curious about it.

See the areas with the background in white? Those areas won’t be displayed ingame. So if you try to use it ingame…
Actually there is way to exceed said limit, but for your Kogasa you’d need double the amount of space that said workaround grants you.

huh. well first of all, thanks for all the in-depth feedback. i appreciate it a lot.
since these mugs are in the very preliminary stage, i didn’t really bother with actually paletting anything out properly - don’t worry, I understand the 16 color limit very well because i do have a lot of experience with pokemon romhacking. that will come later when i make the actual spritesheets. luna in particular was purely a screenshot from my spriting program, as opposed to the actual file, which probably explains the 883 colors lol
as for the areas that won’t display… well that’s something i didn’t know about. i am definitely happy that you informed me now rather than 40 characters in. looks like kogasa is going to have to go umbrella-less, and i think i’m going to have to rework some of the other mugs, daiyousei in particular it looks like.
a question about the status screen - I did not realize until now that it cuts off some of the bottom of each mug, which might throw yet another wrench in things lol. in your post there you have “normal” and “raised” versions, can you elaborate on how that works? is it like, an option in FEBuilder, or did you just manually reposition the whole sprite?
additionally if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sending me something similar to this image -

But seriously, you don’t need to go that far. You could make it work as long as you limit the part that exceeds enough for the workaround to work. Or you could portray her with the umbrella, you know, closed. That’s an option too.
Note that it’s not only the bottom, it also crops the sides. And if you choose to raise it in FEBuilder, instead of cropping the bottom, it will crop the top.
