I just finished The Hag in White and I was absolutely blown away by this ROM hack for very many reasons and I would highly recommend it to veterans and people new to fan games alike! I wanted to share my thoughts on various aspects of the game that stood out to me:
Characters: The characters are all very nicely written and do not fall into standard troupes. There is actual and meaningful character development in the primary cast (Kyra, Apate, Agari, Begonya, Pericles) and the supporting cast, while being defined mostly by one major quirk each, still managed to be very interesting and keep my attention in support conversations. My favorite character was Alonso! Also, the character portraits have so much character; they looked and felt very genuine, meaningfully diverse and well thought out. My favorite character portraits were Soter, Alonso, Kairos, Begonya, Lopez, Teresa!
Story: The main plot is very well written and straightforward (which is a great thing!). The selling point in the story is the journey, characters and relationships. Still, the “plot twists” and surprises managed to catch me off guard and I was pleasantly surprised by them. The setting and world was quite unique and I very much enjoyed this medieval tale! I always felt like I wanted to see what happens next, which is a great way to keep people playing through to the end. Other hacks very commonly drag the story along too much and tedious late game parts make the problems worse. The length of the game and story is extremely spot on (~25 chapters is the perfect length in my opinion)!
Music: Okay, this one deserves a special mention. The music and track choice was absolutely phenomenal. The preparation theme from rondo of swords is up there with ones from shadow dragon, 3H and echoes. The positive effect that music has on the player is severely underrated and not well understood by hack developers. Rubenio clearly understands what good music is and how to pick the right music for each part of the game and it shows wonderfully.
Map design and gameplay: This is where the game is the weakest in terms of innovation. The maps are relatively simple and don’t have many gimmicks. However if you’re looking for more vanilla-adjacent GBA FE experience, this is perfect. Having said that, the main gimmick of the hack of limited healing more than makes up for the simple map design. On hard difficulty, the mental attention needed to carefully consider unit placement is more than enough to makes these maps enjoyable and interesting all the way through; the game is well designed around the limited healing (except for a minor thing discussed below). The new classes, the mixed magical/physical units, bows were a lot of fun to use!
The only minor negative about map design and the hack as a whole is the reinforcement spam on hard difficulty. It needs to be toned down just a notch to still be fair and challenging without feeling unfair. The problem in later chapters is that the enemy reinforcements are strong and have overlapping ranges and mixed weapon types so enemy phasing is very hard to do, even with defensive units. On the other hand, dealing with them on player phase is also hard since the reinforcements move closer and need to be dealt with in parallel to the enemies along the objective. This, along with needing to split the party often makes it especially tough. This was only an issue in a select few maps, the mid-late defense map stands out as being a huge random spike in difficulty.
To end on a very positive note, this hack is up there for me along with the most popular ones. However unlike them, this manages to feel different and enjoyable in a memorable way. It kept my full attention in both the story and gameplay, from start to finish, a feat that no other hack has managed to do this well!
9.5/10
P. S. this is my first post on FEU!
