I don’t mind taking it to DMs lol
My apologies for this. I hoped it wouldn’t escalate to this extent.
I wasn’t planning to say anything official on this topic but since we were asked…
This project is, for the time being, strictly allowed under the rules. AI art is already banned from more or less every major community venture (of which, to be clear, the only one I have any direct say over is FEE3, so that’s a pretty clear statement on what the community wants to see). Banning the use of procedural generation in general is way too wide of a net (for example, this rules out roguelikes), and anything more precise simply invites witch hunts. While those will happen anyway, that is not something that we intend to write into moderation policy (see more below).
My personal feelings on the matter are very in line with Olivia’s, particularly this part:
which is, as usual, significantly more articulate and precise than I’m capable of being.
When it comes to projects receiving a negative reception, well, the staff cannot force people to like you or your work. While there are some cases where the reasons for said dislike are worthy of mod action (situations which are outlined clearly in the rules), “I am feeling bullied because people don’t like that I’m using generative AI” isn’t one of them. On the flip side, “lots of people vocally dislike this” is not a good basis on which to write moderation policy, as much as I would like to (see: PMEs). To some extent I do think the vitriol over the subject has gotten a little out of hand, but also half of this conversation happened at two in the morning for me.
Sorry.
I am just afraid of AI.
Afraid of a world where art that wasn’t made by humans exist.
like, it is something made out of human ideas, human words, human drawings, human music and yet the end result is an amalgamation of those things that isn’t human.
That scares me.
But, that doesn’t mean that everyone using it is evil and that every form of it is evil. Like, there are a lot of good uses for it.
I just feared the moment I saw art that I didn’t immediately recognized as AI art.
But, I guess I do see the genuine use of it. Like a fire emblem game that is made to adjust to my story, a fire emblem game that fully embraces the “every playthrough is your story” idea.
That is also personalization, like I can imagine a good AI game working. Like while I do love games that let you be the hero of a pre generated story, using an AI as a companion of sorts to be truly the hero of your own story, not confined by dialogue options, could be cool.
I will always love small hand crafted works of art, but I never tried the other extreme. Like a lot of games are already big generic blobs of filler, who knows, big generic blobs of filler I can manipulate with my own input may even be better than that.
Fire can be used both to cook meat to make it edible and harm others. That doesn’t mean I should be afraid of Fire.
I hope this can be like a peaceful note or something. I still fear AI, but I don’t want to be blinded by that fear.
Excellent points, you have good articulation.
What would ethically or realistically separate using something AI-Generated as a starting point for original creation from using a writing prompt or someone else’s work or work by multiple other people as a starting point for original creation?
I guess nothing.
Like for me creativity is the combinations of ideas.
I always try to do such things in my works, that for instance Harold’s Big Score isn’t just Beavis and Butthead but it is in a fantasy world. It is also a loose wizard of Oz pardoy, a nod to Konosuba, a subversion of a rebellion narrative etc.
So yeah, as long as you are taking inspiration and not copying I guess. I don’t mind you taking inspiration from AI. Like you can make something generic without using AI, so you can make something unique with the aid of AI.
Just, don’t take too much from one single source. It is part of the creative process to turn inspiration into originality.
reasonable source of consent
is there no openai version of this
i see you everywhere asking for versions and changes to things, never change, saysay.
This release is considered an early prototype, so I just used openai to prove it works.
I may add support for local ai models, or anyone can modify the open source code to do so.
i look forward to see it.
UPDATE: FE Infinity is now free to play! I have switched the project over to using Gemini, which has a very generous free tier that resets each day. You’ll be able to have the game generate many chapters per day completely for free, no payment method required.
First, make sure you have the latest version downloaded.
Create a Gemini API key then paste it in to the AI API key field in the FE Infinity settings.
