Let's make a FE6 community patch ! (An FE6 PME)

Let’s do it gamers, Constitution differences are no more, and mounted aid is 25-CON across the board

You should put Roy in the game

Nah man, Roy is cool and all but there might be a better option…

I know, I think AliScrooge should add Marth instead.

Well, Marth is know to have an “unique” aproach to how to treat new recruit. This give me an idea… I’ll try to see what I can do

  1. Make Douglas stop moving and attacking after player’s units talked to him in chapter 16. Sometimes in my playthrough i already wasted sleep staff and well… All gameplay in this chapter becomes “Let’s run from Douglas all over the map”.

  2. I was wondering if we could make some kind of triangle attack for the Etrurian generals, but i don’t know if we could implement something like that.

This is probably possible but it is a complete nightmare animation wise and my understanding is that it would require to replace an existing one, and the armor one feel too inconic to FE6 to remove in my opinion

Douglas will be implemented

Done. Here my change (feel free to modify them) :

Fir: +1 Con. In addition, gain one additional Con on promotion, matching Rutger

Juno: +2 Con (She probably needs way more help in other area)

Thea: +1 Con

Echidna: +5 Con (matching Dieck). This is a significant buff, though less than what it seems due to the good axe (Silver and Killer) only weighting 12.

Sue: +2 Con on promotion (matching Sin)

Gwendolyn: +4 Con on promotion (matching her brother). Also a big buff, but it’s Gwendolyn.

Cecilia: +1 Con (matching Hugh)

Ellen : +2 Con (matching Saul)

Sophia: +1 Con (matching Raigh, for all the good this does her)

Melady is untouched because she is already the best unit in the game

Hmm not sure I like this approach actually. CON is a value based on mass and muscle isnt it? I think it should be taken in considiration.

I would rather you give all the girls a boost in speed by the same amount. Either by base stats or by growth. And their max-stat aswell maybe.

Just my point of view.

Con in the GBA game is a ambiguous stat that vaguelly represent both the physical mass but also the equiment and is generally just bit weird (why does your muscle have no impact on the strength stat and vice versa ? Why does having heavier armor make you better at handling heavy instead of the reverse happening ? This is why FE9 to 11 and 3H use strength for their weight calculation).

In general, while an argument for realism could be made, FE is so far removed from any real world concern, especially the weight system wich just completly work on vibe that I don’t think we should pay anymind, especially since the system isn’t present in most Fire Emblem and that some of the existing choice by IS are curious are best (Shoutout to Ewan ending up with 2 more Con that Isadora).

I did try to pay it in mind, wich is why Sue, Fir and Gwendolyn only gain Con on their promotion. Also note that a speed buff would be often much better, since speed work all the time, unlike con wich only work up to the weapon weight

Hit formula: Hit = 2*SKL+LCK (instead of LCK/2)

Grazing (missed hits deal half damage instead of none) was something I was planning to try with fe6 class swap and which could be suitable here. It was surprisingly easy to implement in fe8, although I dunno if the same would be true for fe6.

Grazing prevents those FeelsBad, “I attacked this guy with like 3 guys and they all whiffed, now someone is dead” moments while still preserving the improvisation that fe6’s shaky hit rates promote. It also makes Rutger significantly more mortal (although still very good), steel weapon enemies less of a joke, and nomad troopers less agonizing to fight against, all of which are good things, I think.

Grazing does have some knock-on effects that might need to be addressed, though: It pushes hand axes and javs quite a fair way ahead of your other axes and lance options, so you might want to nerf them (but not necessarily spears, tomahawks, etc.) to being unable to double, even though they’re not oppressive in vanilla fe6. The version of nosferatu in shops (but not necessarily the version of nosferatu used by enemies and found in chests) might also need to be replaced with a 0 hit version so that player!nos will usually graze, as low wt, consistent nos is kind of oppressive otherwise.

It also has a cool interaction with fe6’s take on Eclipse: with grazing, fe6!Eclipse reduces a target’s HP to 1 on a hit and approximately halves their HP on a miss, making it a cool utility siege tome that’s guaranteed to do something.

Remove the legendary weapons requirement for the true ending. If someone actually cares about that condition, they can just voluntarily stop playing the game after Zephiel’s map.

Replace the purchaseable killer weapons with [placeholder name] weapons. Instead of having a flat crit rate bonus, these double your crit rate (before enemy lck is applied). Swordmasters and Berserkers can still ball with them with around the same crit rates they get with killers, and these weapons will still crit noticeably more often than normal weapons, but they’re less of an obvious best in slot for non-crit boost classes. Wo Daos get this effect + a small (10-ish?) flat crit rate boost, as a treat.

Replacing the specialized promotion items with master seals is a common change.

Remove HMBs for player units. Add Thea’s vanilla HMBs to her normal statline.

Rework supports in… some way. Just anything other than the vanilla fe6 support system.

Make iron and steel weapons unbreakable.

Adthor made an fe6 bugfix edition redux patch that you might want to check out and/or use as a base (with permission). It fixes the staffer targeting priority exploit, removes player hmbs, and makes almost all ambush spawns non-ambush spawns, among other things.

Grazing is an interesting idea, but I feel it just introduce too much knock-off effect for my liking, and would make the early game in particular a complete nighmare. It also feel distinctly un-FE as a mechanic, and while it is probably not impossible to implement, I don’t feel super confident with anything needing to mess with the battle calculation. Same thing killer weapon.

Agreed on the support point. I will look into what is possible and make a poll.

Finally, for the Hard mode bonus, I don’t know. It’s certainly a bug, but it is a very iconic one, enought for it to be featured in Roy kit in Engage ! So I’m just gonna let people vote on it

  • Keep hard mode bonus as it is
  • Remove it
  • Add it to unit wich don’t have it (Douglas and Raigh)

Well, I have played with how the support work and I can now say that I now have the FE9 suport system working (no gain by adjency, but a set gain by chapter when deployed). I tend to find it the best solution, since it just remove the need for grinding entirely without making you blow out every support in 3 chapters

My suggestion and I don’t know if this is in the scope but a recruitable civilian who was just self-centered and thinks that they’re the main character you’d be able to tell the the civilian is recruitable by the change in hair color compared to the other civilians
Screenshot_20240901_014254
Also instead of being the civilian class she would be a thief could go over a character if need be
Also every other character hates them but only keeps them because they’re a thief

I don’t think we should ashun FE6’s unique identity. What others see as flaws I think of as part of its unique character and these things enhance the gameplay experience it provides.

For this reason I suggest we give Roy 1Hp with a 0%growth rate.

I feel this will enhance the strategic depth involved in escorting him to each of the game’s chairs.

Hum, I think the only instance of civilian npc actually showing up on the map is in 21 ilya, so I suppose she could show up here. In general, for new characters, I think the easiest way would be to check if you have lost a unit/not recruited one and only then allow for recruitment if you still have “place”, if that make sense. It shouldn’t be too hard to implement.

As for other thing :

I have replaced some of the redondant promo item given with master seal. This retain the utility of having specialised item that doesn’t compete with each other, while still allowing you to not bottleneck if you decide to go for the amor triangle attack or all in on archer for example.

The people are spoken and are clearly in favor of adding HM bonus to Douglas and Raigh.

Finally, there is the matter of the hit rate. A very simple solution would be to simply port FE7-8 value and call it a day, but it does run into the issue of making the already hard early chapter even more difficult. There is however a simple solution : removing the bug that double the hard mode bonus enemy receive in chapter 1-5. This, combined with the stronger weapon triangle, should be enought to solve the problem. I would be lying if I says I was a fan of touching FE6 hitrate, but that the beauty of a PME isn’t it ? I will allow myself one veto, wich is that hand axe and javelin will not be touched.

Indeed, vanilla FE6 is quite an interesting game balance-wise lol.

Btw @AliScrooge, are you gonna remove most ambush spawns and make them player phase?
And the hardcoded ones (like Chapter 21 and the erratic wyvern reinforcements), are you gonna leave them as is or try to work on their coding/events?
