[FE8] The Princess's Lament - A Sacred Stones rebalance, rewrite, overhaul, expansion extravaganza!

Finally got around to finishing my playthrough of this - absolutely incredible hack. The story changes alone make this the definitive version of FE8 to me, and I love all the little details you put in to respond to different scenarios. The gameplay changes were very fun and generally matched the difficulty very well - Amelia being an obvious exception, but that’s okay. 10/10

Melville was happy

About halfway through, and I gotta say, portrait-jank and unusual prf weapons aside, I’m really liking it so far!

In regards to support-conversations, I kinda want to ask, you say they’re the “bane of every hacker’s existence.” Is that in the context of coding the supports, or actually writing them? It definitely is a bit disappointing that a lot of characters don’t have written supports at all (Especially D’Erica who barely has spoken dialogue at all. And it’s a shame, because it’s not every day you meet an FE character with an eternally-covered face.)
Though that said, a conversation for Melville / Afrira would be…well…unusual, to say the least.

Never got around to responding to this but thank you for your kind words!

Thank you as well. Hope you continue enjoying it.

Actually writing them. There’s a reason most hacks end up having incomplete supports, or not writing them at all - it’s a lot of conversations and the work adds up fast.

This hack was a very on-the-fly thing, I mostly just had fun coming up with silly ideas and seeing if I could implement them. When I reached the end and had nothing more to throw into the mix, the thought of stopping to write a hundred conversations just wasn’t so appealing.

(Also hey, if you liked D’Erica, I’ll have you know she’s a direct reference. Check out Berwick Saga!)

Alright! Just finished, and…

Spoilers

Why’d ya have to do Novala like that? It was cute to imagine him and his little spider-friend, but then the epilogue reveals Melville didn’t care about him at all? And D’Erica just had to rub salt in the wound…it’s really disappointing, and it kinda makes me wish I deployed D’Erica on the final map just to let her die and see if that changes it at all…It likely won’t! But Novala only has one support, and it’s with Melville, who clearly doesn’t want a paired ending with him. I mean, yeah, he’s a war-criminal, but I’ve warmed up to him a lot! He was one of the few good early-game units who wouldn’t go on to become a Gotoh-Wolf!
That ending just REALLY stung… 7-7

Hey, it hurt me to do him like that too! But at some point one has to stop and consider the war crimes. And I wouldn’t say Melville didn’t care at all, more like she realized he’s kind of a horrible person lol

Hey @SaintRubenio , this looks interesting. Almost as much as your profile picture (wtf man ). I guess the new units from Ephraim route don’t get supports because that’s too much work, but with vanilla supports is enough for me. As for the important part:
Is there a guide for the new characters recruitment and the secret chapters? Or at least hints to unlock them? If I am going to try out a remake of FE8, I believe it’s mandatory to enjoy the things that weren’t originally in it, thus my question.

EDIT: screw that, there is a guide with the download link. Excuse me

Bloody hell, you can’t just drop that Seth dies! I almost died myself when I read that part! But he revives, you say. Does he retain his supports? I normally pair him with Eirika because I love their ending together, I hope they still can after his revival.

Remember back when Alear was revealed and there was a small phase of memes where people edited fictional characters’ hair to look like Alear’s? That’s what it is, I just got creative with the beard.

Worth noting they can get gameplay supports. There are also a handful of new unit supports written, I just wrote very few before burning out lol

Since the cat's out of the bag...

It is a mistake to assume things are as straightforward as they may seem.

In any case, I see some supports for the new characters are written (like Novala’s) while others aren’t. I also see the thread’s title doesn’t have the word “complete”, so is it safe to believe you will eventually finish writting the unfinished supports? Unless you are so burnt out that you’d rather never finish them.

Summary

I can only hope “revival” in this context means “to revive”, and not any of its other meanings…

To be honest, I doubt I’ll go back to this much. It was a really fun time and a good learning experience, but I’m happy with where it is at the moment. Shame about the missing supports, but oh well, it is what it is.

Understandable… And a good way to sneak past the other part of the message, you sneaky colorful beardy . Welp, guess I’ll have to see (and suffer) through it myself.

I hate you beardy, but...

Alright, let’s be fair here. You did a GREAT job with this game. Seriously, you made Eirika’s character so much better than it originally was. You almost gave me a heart attack when Ephraim almost dies, but alright. The chapter in which you fight Riev possing as Eirika and Seth’s dead body is great too. And now, “”“”““Bastion””“”“”. It was kind of obvious, really. A perfect ending to a perfect story, for him. The new characters were great too, particularly Moulder’s part and his parents’.

Every character had something good about them that make them useful, and not just part of the mob… That is, if they had supports. Sadly, the lack of supports makes them less attractive than they should. Hell, just look at Elaine and Harriet! They were awesome, from beggining to end, with all those chats sprinkled through the game and their supports made me love them both (you outdid yourself with these 2, really).

Honestly, the only reason I am not giving this game a 10/10 is because of the support thing and that Seth is dead. No, seriously. You killed my favorite character in the game and one who looks so perfect next to Eirika. It’s a question of feelings, really. If you had killed any other character but Seth, I would have given this game full marks.
All that said, I understand it. It HAD TO be Seth, no other character would have worked this nicely. So, even if I can’t like it, I fully respect it.

Last but no least: do you mind telling me who is the secret character? I forgot to make Amelia a general (I was in autopilot and selected the best option, the soldier), so I couldn’t get him/her. And I really don’t want to play through this again, I don’t wanna see my dears suffering so much once more.

And now, if you will excuse me, I’ll go play The Sacred Trilogy to cleanse my soul and heart, I need it :mending_heart:

Gahahahaha

Nice.

Elaine and Harriett are some of my favorites as well. You can tell who I liked more and who was more of a filler based on the amount of talks, supports and dialogue they got lol. Poor, poor Harold…

The secret character is the soldier! If all the requirements are completed, he joins the team. He’s very generic and very not as good as Drau but he’s funnier.

Thank you for all the high praise! Glad you enjoyed the hack.

RAAAH! Replay complete!

And I enjoyed this game just as much as I did the first time I played it!

Summary

There was less shock value this time, as I was able to prepare myself for chapter 8, but I think I actually benefited from a second playthrough in that I didn’t pay enough attention to the subplot of Aristobulus and Na’amah. They were both long-term party members this time, and Na’amah was even one of my endgame team members.

Uh…

Instead of posting my entire endgame team, I’ll just share some of the MVPs.

Summary

The Princess's Lament-0

Valent was never the fastest, or the most powerful, but… damn. Bro was determined to just be good at everything. He was good when I got him and he remained solid all the way to the end.

The Princess's Lament-1

Novala… he was in my endgame team last time, and I used him again for good reason. BEHOLD! My Novala is in the top 1% of all Novalas! I gave a few talismans to him because his res sucked, but… holy cow, he capped defense all on his own. I don’t know how he managed that on a 20% def growth, but… way to go man. Funniest character in the game, and definitely one of my top 3.

The Princess's Lament-2

Harold was absolutely broken in my run, and I’d say after Eirika herself he was the strongest unit I had. Insane damage, fast as hell, and tankier than any other berserker I’ve ever used.

Just finished this hack and… I wanted to say, this is probably the most fun I’ve had with Sacred Stones’ story. You made a game that has a very interesting and tragic story that kind of falls flat into a more hopeful yet even more sorrowful story. I would talk further about it, but I’d be here for a lot. the TL;DR would be thank you for the Eirika story change and making Moulder and Syrene more relevant. On that note I do want to point out a specific issue I had, plus a suggestion, AND show off my MVPs.

Bug report

Why does Ewan gain so much exp as a promoted unit? I carefully leveled him up thinking he was going to slow down when he promoted, but he just kept getting massive amounts of exp, he even capped levels way before anyone even got close to level 10! Was there something wrong with the coding that considers the Malig Knight class as a promotion from Dark Rider to get unpromoted unit exp gains? I liked Ewan already, but I felt like this is a bit too much, even for what Amelia got or the unique class Ross can use.

Suggestion

Now, I know if you can’t do this bc it’s beyond your scope, however I find it’d be extremely charming if Syrene and Moulder got their own unique classes since they get such a massive role in this game yet no special treatment like prfs (which maybe they should have!). NOTHING TOO CRAZY! Just some small variations from their og classes.

I feel like Syrene could get the equivalent of Wyvern Knight but for Pegasus, in which she’s a swordlocked Pegasus flier, it’d be cool and a good way to differentiate her if you promote Tana or Vanessa to Falco Knights, maybe it could be named “Pegasus Commander” or something. Her prf could just be a better Light Brand so that it doesn’t overlap with the Wind Sword.

Moulder could get on his promotion branch an option between Bishop and a class named Light Druid or something, which replaces anima magic for light magic. This would be great story wise to reference the fact that his father is more light oriented, and his mother is dark oriented. He could also get a prf staff gifted to him by Hayden at the start of the army split. Not sure on what it could be, maybe a 15 use physic restore staff? Or just a healing restore staff in general.

Like, come on, these guys get tasked with handling these messes of lords and they don’t get some extra bonuses for it? Poor Moulder and Syrene.

MVPs

The Boulder Himself. He got a lot of speed level ups, and when I saw he could promote into druid to great benefit, I immediately went and capped him to 20 with some archers (thanks Gilliam). By far the most interesting staff utility unit I’ve ever had. This hack made me like him 10 times more because of combat and story.

Take a wild guess who got the omni stat booster. She was already really good, but I decided it’d be funnier if she was better, and here we are. Her prf was a joy to use and beat the Demon King with once and for all, I love fast lance infantries.

I gotta say, bold choice on making Artur not promote into Bishop AND make him a light mage cav. I think this is the second time I’ve seen someone do a base class light mage cav unit (the first time being Helen from Deity Device) and DAMN it’s fun. I love Artur in general so it was great to use him in a completely different way (even though I’ve already played with Artur Sage, Bishop, and Hermit in Sacred Redux).

Zero to Hero story for him. I don’t really like using Paladins in FE, I’ve NEVER used Franz. But after chapter 8, I thought it’d be a fantastic idea to start building him (even if he was just level 3) and it paid OFF, it’s like something switched in him and he finally started getting good levels that I’ve never gotten off of the times I’ve used Franz in earlygame. He truly became what his mentor would’ve liked him to become.

The only OC alongside Novala that I put in full investment for. It was rough training Franz, Amelia and D’Erica on Ephraim’s side meanwhile Eirika was just playing the game normally, but it paid off by having one of the best Great Knights I’ve ever had. The chapter she promoted she was facing triple 0s vs enemies lol. I got blessed with her luck and skill, and I just had to feed her an energy ring or two. Really REALLY fun unit with one of the most satisfying promotion payoffs.

Aaand yeah, that’s it! I really enjoyed this hack :), despite not using many of them, I also enjoyed the stories or personalities of some of the OCs or characters you repurposed into bigger/different roles. Hope eventually the support writing gets done (maybe you should try to find someone willing to write supports if you can) because I really love the writing and direction you had!

Glad you enjoyed this little experiment of mine! I don’t think I’ll work more on it, it was a fun learning experience but I’ve moved on to other things now. Still, I am grateful for the kind words.

As for the Ewan thing… Yeah, I remember hearing of it before. Still have no idea why it happens. The hack has a few weird quirks that I never really understood. Just first hack things, I suppose.

What a beautiful experience!
It was the third hack that I tried after Sacred Echoes and Project Ember. I have to say that I really liked it!
I’m on chapter 23 now, so I’m not done yet. However, the plot of the story is linear and wonderful, as are the playable characters. Like Novala and his spider friendFurthermore, I really enjoyed the in-depth analysis of the history of Orson, one of my “favorite antagonists”. I didn’t expect Seth’s death and Eirika’s subsequent trauma. If I have to tell the truth, I thought that the princess of Renais would become evil, but oh well.
However, I would like to report some bugs during the gameplay:
-until chapter 21 everything was smooth, but in chapter 21x I encountered slowdowns, but nothing serious. The sprites were quite buggy and it was difficult to see who the enemies were because some were replaced by gargoyles.
-The most insidious bug is that of supplies: after the chapter. 21x, opening the supply menu I see unusual weapons and also unusually high quantities. When I choose a corrupted weapon, the game freezes and it’s quite annoying. I haven’t applied any cheats or anything and I’m using Pizza Boy GBA as an emulator. For now, I have only encountered these bugs.
However, as I said before, it was a lot of fun and so I recommend you give it a try if you love an alternative history. I will definitely try the other mod which the character is not Roy, but Zephiel. Lastly, I would like to thank the creators of this mod!

You are fantastic!

Thank you very much for your kind words! The convoy bug is known, but… to tell you the truth, I could never figure out what caused it and just hoped that not too many people would be affected. Oh well.

Hope you enjoy Eckesachs as well! It uh, does not have those bugs. It does have other bugs, though, because FE6 is a fun game to hack.

Hello i just finished your hack !
I have to say to you i’ve had a real blast playing it !
I love the changes you made to the story it felt really nice to have them !

The added characters were interesting ( Melville is certainly my favorite) na’amah is clearly a strong addition aswell.

The changes made to the chapters were refreshing i kinda had a moment of doubt for the last one but as for her wedding L’Arachel carried the day.

Wich happens to bring me to maybe my most important point, YOU absolute genius made L’Arachel have acess to the sage class, making my favorite Ivaldi wielder even more powerfull ? AHAH well don’t mind if i do, she bullied the endgame only receiving a metis tome and an angelic robe.

On a less exciting matter the additional chapters were nice, the one i prefered was 6x i absolutely loved that you made it clear during the pre chapter talking that there was no time to loose and that they had to hurry and that you translated it well into gameplay that was really smart from you and even if it cost me a full reset i enjoyed it.

The points i didn’t like as much ( and they aren’t really that important clearly you made so much good work in this game that this is just points i feel like could be a bit ehanced)

  • the archers damage during the early game felt like they were on steroids even if i think that’s because i mainly rolled really poor def stats on all my units during my run
  • desert chapter and it’s 8 selectable unit felt a bit unfair.
I understand why you chose almost only pre promoted units for ephraim’s arrival but as i avoid playing with them i had a hard time to pass it.
    And that’s all for those.

To finish i just want to thank you and anyone who helped you for this romhack, you clearly made a glorious “remake” of the original game and i loved almost every bits of it.

I hope to be able to play any romhack you do in the future if you ever do another one.

Thanks again for you hard work !
