[FE8] Sacred Stones Reforged v1.0.2

Im not sure which one I should choose. I know of the Light Brand, but three other weapons choices, we can’t get the other two once I choose one? And I know light Brand available later on in I think, last chapter?

So follow up when I clicked Alice in the Support Viewer none of hers worked. So I was just making sure. Trying to figure out my first run party lol

Bug report

Playing on john gba, which is basically vba-m on android

Vigarde is unkillable. He heals to full after combat. Not the nosferatu healing, I mean he literally heals to full.

lightbrand is good for eirika, is vanilla tho

Crest lance allows for follow ups to occur immediately (not brave, it only proccs if you’re fast enough to double)

Garish Axe gives you aptitude

stormbow has low might but galeforce

info from the disc is this

Ohh thanks for the info  so that means I can only choose just one and that’s it. They are all great too

Awesome thanks for fixing that!

I’m not sure on the L’Arachel heal staff bug, but it’s pretty minor even if people do run into it.

I agree with not being able to perfectly balance all promotion options and I will retract my statement a little because I promoted Ross into a captain and he had been an absolute beast even on lunatic.

I do have one more bug to report. On the new Valter map Seth was deployed even though I didn’t deploy him and if he was the last unit to move, the auto turn end activated before he was moved.

Hey all - my game is stuck when I enter a battle on chapter 14 on Ephraim’s route? I can see the map if I check map, but when I enter the battle the game freezes on a back screen. Is there a work around? I could try another fire emblem rom but I’m unsure how to move around my save files.

This was a bug in the first version, if you download again it will be working!

This is very strange, I think it must be something with JohnGBA since I haven’t gotten this report before and he works normally for me on MGBA and VBA.

Will I be able to use my same save file? I’m on an iPhone

Yes, you can. If you use Delta, you are able to import a rom of the same name over the existing one and it will rewrite it and use the old save. For other emulators, it should be possible as well though I am not familiar with the process

Awesome ! I got it. Thanks so much, I’m really enjoying the new mechanics on my favorite FE game :)))

Did… Did you mix up Kyle and Forde?

I’m kidding, but it’s so very weird to me to have Forde be the one with axes between the two of them. Kyle is the bigger of the two, having one more con than Forde in vanilla, and in fact every other hack has him being the axe cavalier. Did you just want to subvert expectations?

I figured as much. It’s good to know that others won’t run into that issue. I managed to kill him either with a critical or Azure Twinblade; I don’t remember exactly.

This is my full review of the game.
Played on Ephraim Lunatic Classic.

long post lol

The structure of this review will be more akin to my personal thoughts than actionable criticism. I don’t know if any of this will be useful for further development, polishing, or balance. This is simply just my thoughts. Full game spoilers.

General Comments:

The lack of weapon durability was a welcomed change for me. Trying to balance weapon uses while also giving the player an open map will inevitably turn into balancing the total amount of gold the player has, which would have been really messy. The current system reminds me of FE4 the most, where getting something like 1 sliver sword or a brave lance is a huge deal. You deserve major props for making the map aspect work.

The altered skill system is exactly how FEH’s special skills work. Whether this was intentional or not, I don’t know. But it fits well with FE gameplay; I just wish there was a way to display the build-up number at the corner of the unit. Though I understand it might be impossible with FE8.

I appreciate you following vanilla FE8 and not adding “rushing” reinforcements. What I mean by this is that many hacks often send out a huge batch of reinforcements at the map’s starting position around the same time that a player is about to kill the boss. The rationale is to incentivize players to complete everything in the map as soon as possible and prevent units from retracing to an earlier portion of the map. While this is fine for most hacks, I’m glad that you didn’t do this for FE8’s maps.

I don’t want to rush to every single chest on Father and Son, while also trying to recruit Rennac and kill Vigarde simultaneously. I’m glad that I can just kill Vigarde and then get the chests while not worrying about a huge batch of reinforcements killing my thief.

The stat buff items genuinely suck. I sold all of them away.

“Increases Defense but lowers Speed.” Really…? Why would I ever want that? Especially on Lunatic?

The districts are a good idea. Personally, I felt that they could have been bigger. (Show off your mapping skills !!) Also, the district’s shops and armouries sell the same items that are available by buying from the world map, right? That’s a bit redundant to me, but I can see why you did it.

Unit balance needs some polishing. All the pre-promotes have been nerfed to oblivion. Seth becomes FE6 Marcus. Saleh can’t double. Dozla can’t double. Alice can’t double. Dussel can’t double and gets doubled. It seems that the go-to nerf is just reducing speed till the unit becomes slow. Overall, I like some changes, but I dislike others. The biggest problem is Kyle. Kyle is a goddamn liability if you use him. Might be one of the worst units in the game. He has no niche and Forde is absurdly better than him. I’ve seen several others voice this opinion in the thread also. Please buff Kyle.

The new map touch-ups and palettes are wonderful. Especially the new custom damaged floor tiles for Bandits of Borgo.

My last point will be about player phase-orientated games vs. enemy phase-orientated games. I think that Reforged Lunatic really wasn’t balanced for either of these. The enemies are so strong that you would think it’s a player-phase-focused hack. But the enemy quantity is so high that you would think it’s an enemy-phase focused hack. The player doesn’t have any good midgame to endgame tanks. (Alice and Dussel fall off hard after a few chapters.) I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, but I thought that there was something fundamentally wrong with how Lunatic plays on chapters like Last Hope.

Chapter Specific Comments:

Chapter 3: Bandits of Borgo
My first character death was here. I had placed Neimi in range of an enemy archer that I knew wouldn’t kill her. I pressed end turn, and then the enemy proc-ed Sure Shot and one-rounded her. I stared at my screen for like 5 seconds, just being (-_-)

Generic archers don’t need these skills. Adds nothing to the experience. Make them player exclusive instead. My first thought when I experienced that was, “This would never have happened if I had been playing vanilla.”

Chapter 4: Ancient Horrors
Storm Bow is by far the best choice. Used it to endgame.

L’arachel’s RPG-ass dialogue explaining what each weapon does kinda broke my immersion.

Chapter 5: The Empire’s Reach

This chapter is so goddamn good. The triangle of lance, then sword, then axe on the left side of the map is so fun to play around with Vanessa rescue-dropping. And unlike vanilla, the enemies are actually strong. This map, on Lunatic, might be the best way for a new player to learn how good flier utility is. One of my favourite chapters.

Chapter 5xx: Unbent Will
Not much to say but thank you for the extra gaiden. A nice, well-made chapter.

Chapter 7: Waterside Renvall
The ballista on the right is a bit too strong. I think it one-rounded my Neimi. I know Neimi isn’t bulky, but dying to a long-range attack is crazy.

Chapter 10: Turning Traitor
High-intensity map, with lots to do and keep track of. An enjoyable and fair challenge. One of my favourite chapters.

Chapter 13: Fluorspar’s Oath
This is my favourite chapter. In vanilla, you can just blindly rush in and kill everything, but here? The added difficulty makes it way more interesting, and making sure that enemy ranges don’t overlap and kill your units requires a lot of careful planning.

Chapter 15 And 16:
Scorched Sand is my favourite vanilla FE8 map, partly because you get to fight both Caellach and Valter. I agree that Valter deserves his own chapter, but it does feel that Scorched Sand becomes a tad underwhelming.

Chapter 20: Last Hope
Rng hell. Rush forward and kill Riev as soon as possible, or else the reinforcements will quickly run your army over. The fun part is when you have to resort to dodge-tanking the bottom area and hoping the 40%/50% hits don’t land.

I don’t know how to balance this. If you reduce reinforcements, Riev becomes too exposed. But in my opinion, this map, on Lunatic, is too rng reliant.

Chapter 21: Darkling Woods
Deadlords are always cool. Memorable and fun chapter.

Chapter 22: Final
The two meme chests are still there yay!

The capped magic gorgon formation is actually not too hard to deal with. The two stationary bosses are unkillable; no unit survives combat with them. I know they’re actually meant for Valni and Lagdou, but it seems like a waste that Nuramon’s and L95’s animations are locked behind an enemy that is so strong I can’t even fight. Also, I’m surprised you didn’t take the void’s bizarre adventure route and combine the two final chapters together; the demon king fight is the same as vanilla.

Closing Thoughts:
If you have read all of this, thanks. I’m happy that I had the opportunity to play Reforged, and I would say that this is the definitive way of playing Sacred Stones. I would recommend polishing some of the rough edges that Lunatic has, and I’m excited to see the reworked postgame.

Thank you to everyone involved in this hack!

I plopped it on moulder and swap it once or twice to franz and those guys tank like there’s no tomorrow

well… technically, if you’re playing well, Moulder shouldn’t shouldn’t be in a position where he has to tank hits.

the problem is that the minus speed might result in the holder being doubled which will deal far more damage than if they weren’t holding it at all

I really appreciate the in-depth feedback here! I’m still actively working on improving the hack, and I’ll definitely be making changes to improve the overall balance and feel of things. Thanks for playing and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

In chapter 5, I bought a Heal staff. Now it’s out of stock but I can keep buying Vulnerary and Pure Water from Vendor. In Armory , the four weapons: Lancereaver, Axereaver, Swordreaver and Mageseeker (awesome weapon name for rending mages btw) they are already out of stock which I haven’t even buy any of them. I’m so confused.

You’re very welcome!

That was an early error, if you redownload the rom it should be ok and working properly! It may require restarting the chapter though, sorry.
