Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it. Overall that map is something that usually takes people an attempt or two to get a grasp on so it’s definitely something I want to mess around with. I personally dislike the idea of it being a survive map due to the water just completely trivializing the map if you don’t care about the rewards or I suppose Starlight.
I believe I’ll remove healing ai from all of the cavalry to keep the player from getting completely screwed by the enemies choosing to go back to the forts, even if most of the reinforcements can be reasonably blocked.

I hope you’ve been enjoying the hack overall though and I hope this chapter didn’t sour your impression too much!

I have been enjoying it so far, if anything that’s why I get verbose about my frustrations.

Ultimately I think there are a few of what I call “volatile maps” those being maps where it either goes really well or astonishingly bad. I honestly have more I want to say, but I’m holding off until I finish it.

Hey there just finished the hack,it was a very fun experince especially with the arenas,you rarely to never see those in hacks,the general using magic always welcome aswell…all in all very enjoyable,which brings me to the question,is there gonna be a sequel?

There’s something else I want to ask: are the support conversations going to be finished anytime soon?
I’m not asking to put pressure, I’m asking so I know if I should play the game or wait. If the supports are going to be finished soon then I’ll wait. If not, I’ll start playing it already.

You should definitely start playing, there are already some supports in the game and it’ll be quite a while before they’re all completed as HotD has a fairly large roster

Is it possible to change Tamaki’s icon since someone so op having such a generic face is a shame and annoying to watch to all this time…also Sal kinda looks like a girl working in an office in a church not very fitting for a warrior savior etc…unless ofc there is a specific reason he looks like that…also Intra as a recruit can go to lvl 20 dont know if its intentional…another thing that occured to me is that i have only Tobias as an S dark magic user since i left Atom out and Tmuran as sage has light primary so i never got dark more than D it would be a nice addition to have Conall promotion as a Wyvern Lord or Malig Knight (using dark magic) instead of Wyvern Knight which honestly doesnt offer much…

Tamaki looking like a generic soldier is the point, if you want to change the portrait you. Can do so in FEbuilder.

The fact that he looks like an ordinary person after the timeskip is intentional, he simply chose to grow his hair out and wears clothing more befitting of someone of Noble status.

It was not but she should automatically promote at the beginning of the next map so eh

I am for the most part done with adding classes and giving dark magic to Conall would break the lore of the game since humans can not use dark magic

Anywho, I finally finished this and am going to try to organise my thoughts into a few sections here, since some spoiler stuff will likely be brought up I will hide them as such.

The Good

The story was actually pretty good over all, Sal going full genocide only to have reality slap back at him was somewhat refreshing and the conclusion being that ultimately humanity still had to “win” so the future could change was Unique enough to me at least.

Enemy variety was good and supplies were plentiful enough that I didn’t really run short of weapons.

Arenas being on a ton of maps was a nice change of pace, though I was unsure if that one on Viskam’s join map was supposed to be there since that map doesn’t have a turn limit like all the other maps with arenas on them.

I also liked the extra blurb of detail at the beginning of each map, since such things are usually glossed over in other hacks.

I put it this way due to not exactly having a concrete understanding of your thoughts on unit balance but holy crap are some of these unit growths awful. With some units being outright unusable in their niches. So many of these units seem like they are more ment to be Memes then actual usable units.

Atom for example is the only natural Dark user you get until either you recruit Elias or Promote Alder to a Sage, and he can’t use any dark tome due to him being FE6 Hugh untill he promotes. It gets more insulting considering either on the same map or next (can’t remember exactly) an enemy drops a " flux" tome that no one in your army can even use. Then on top of that being the only other necromancer you can plausibly obtain you get gut punched and he loses 10hp.

This man has 25 hp at base, and a 10% growth, losing 10hp is a death sentence making using him after that require every Angelic Robe you get, he also has a 10% res and 2‰ defense growth. I get he may be the intended user of “Call of The Night” but at that point he at least should have good HP otherwise that tome basically has 1 durabilty since anything will kill him if they can.

Other units that have growths that render them almost, if not outright, unusable are.

  1. Mary, 10% strength and speed with bad defences on a Lance Cav.

  2. Miles, I did his secret event and even with effectively being a trainee his growths are so bad that even Dire Thunder isn’t enough to really salvage him without boosters.

  3. Subaru, 15% Strength on an axe cav isn’t particularly helpful.

  4. Wolgar. This one is the other way around, with stupidly high growths but atrocious bases that will actually get him killed on his join map, if the idea was to use the arena on that map to build him up, it failed because he can’t survive any opponents due to being promoted.

Most other units are decent enough but just enough of them have these weird meme growths that it bothers me.

Some of the status staff spam in later maps can also be a pain, but thats neither here nor there.

Beyond what I’ve put into the above everything worked as it should, I will keep an eye out for any further support updates you do since a lot of the cast effectively don’t have personalities until they have at least one support chain.

On a side note since I don’t know if this was intentional but I was able to get both of Fidem’s supports to S rank.

Hello, firstly thank you very much for the review, it’s much appreciated to hear other’s thoughts on the hack, although a few of the things mentioned feels odd to me

Atom is largely meant to be the epitome of a glass cannon, with necromancer only further increasing that min maxing, although while in shaman he can make use of thorn surprisingly well.
Necromancer’s primary uses are staff utility and summons, it’s not necessarily supposed to be an ultra good combat class due primarily to the lore implications of necromancer as a class.
If you wanted a combat atom I would have recommended druid as it gives him a pretty substantial increase to his bulk while still boosting his dark rank to S.

Miles’s promotion was primarily just a meme to be quite honest.

Subaru is actually one of the best units in part 2, the 15% strength growth is deceptive. He has really good bulk and speed along with using axes which circumvents a lot of his damage problems, I actually considered nerfing him for a bit.

I will admit that Wolgar as a unit is probably the worst unit in Host of the Dark although he can get levels quickly if he’s taken off the bench when promoted units start showing up.

Yeah supports right now are a little bugged, making the support icon not disappear after A.

Honestly, most units were fine. As far as subaru goes, his bulk wasn’t the over all issue it was his damage and accuracy. With the considerable amount of maps that either are strict routs or have a bunch of reinforcements the need for either fast and accurate characters started to become more and more apparent.

After a certain point many units just can’t survive due to some really lopsided aspect to their growths.

Funny enough Necro Atom was one of my finale units just due to the fact he nearly capped his magic speed and skill while also getting enough luck that he never really got hit, but I know that is because I got lucky with his stats.

Another character I had gotten lucky with was actually Mary, she just kept getting speed and strength ending up with 20 strength and around 23 speed by finale.

I did try to use wolgar but he just had bases that were too low for when enough promoted foes show up, usually getting one-rounded if he got jumped by a 2 range unit since otherwise he couldn’t really hit much.

Beyond that its mostly stuff like, Generals with 4 speed are pretty useless due to how much damage they’ll take during enemy phase, the Swift Edge Users list is super janky due to how you assigned the myrm flag to character rather then class (ie anna can use it as a hero but only her, (name escapes me) and tatiana have the ability to use it.), Figem as a vanguard still being able to use lockpicks actually saved me a reset on the map he promotes on. But none of that really detracted from my enjoyment so I didn’t really bring it up.

Edit: realised I never actually answered properly.

I can’t really say any were stellar, but they got the job done. Didn’t have anyone die thankfully but quite a few units certainly try too.

No, as it is stated in the OP supports are currently being worked on with only some as of now being implemented. I consider it complete since it is playable from start to finish.

Hey, I’m getting a black screen with just the outlines of the game options, right after the title splash on both mgba and visual boy. Is there a different emu you recommend or is something else happening?

Hi! I haven’t encountered this bug before, I have playtested this patch and even downloaded from the same link numerous times to ensure that it played right.

I would recommend redownloading the 1.2 patch and ensuring that you have patched the rom correctly, this was tested with mGBA so compatibility with both it and most other emulators should be as good as can be.

Redownloaded 1.2 patch, patched with NUPS and a clean FE8 rom, loaded with a fresh DL of mGBA, this is what I’m getting

Thank you for the quick follow up, I’m unsure of what exactly is causing this bug, I just patched a fresh rom with the newest patch and it is playing as normal.

Make sure you are patching to a US FE8 rom and that you are using the patch labeled HotD1.2.ups

Besides that I can only recommend you try a different patching software I’m sorry to say
