[FE8] Hetja's Quest (v0.8.01.01)

Really fun hack! As a series fan who has never dabbled beyond the official games, this is incredibly addiciting and I look forward to playing it more and more as the updates roll out. That said, I notice some people saying they beat the final boss already, how the heck do you deal with the fire dragon? I had a 20/20 swordmaster with 37 strength and an effective weapon (admittedly not the wyrmslayer, but I don’t think it would have mattered), and all I could see doing was praying for a double crit, as the dragon 2 shots no matter where you go, and using a healing item means you eat a free attack on enemy phase. It looks like maybe you need a legendary weapon?

There’s several final bosses, but the fire dragon is indeed pretty tough; have capped speed and luck and maybe you’ll dodge a hit.

I made an account just for this mod to say how much I’ve enjoyed it, as well as some ideas for it.(Only remembered afterwards you also had a discord, but this spot feels better for more longer-form comments anyways). I don’t actually play fire emblem games(I have trouble getting into mid-large scale tactics games in general), but I was introduced to this game by Mekkah’s first stream on it a few weeks ago.(I also enjoyed your MOBA emblem when I learned about it, and I can make a similar comment on that one if you’d like). Most of my complaints are going to come from my most recent runs trying to promote Dorothy for swords.

1:Is it possible to cater shops to the character of the specific run? I don’t mind the true randomness in Houses because you can at least always just sell the item, but having a variety of shop types for characters that only ever gets 1-2 weapon types can’t use feels pretty bad. Even giving every shop generally applicable items like consumables and passive items would be a nice QoL.

2:Can we have more than one final boss as a choice in a run? I know having more then one “final” boss in general feels kind of weird, but some of the bosses have different strengths and weaknesses, and I don’t think you learn which one you have until you reach the final chapter?

3:Is there a way to implement a form of meta-progression item limit on a run? I know this feels kind of fun-police-y, but the difference between having no items and over 100 fish and berries is massive, to the point I feel kind of bad using them in general because I can’t tell if the game is balanced around using them, and what the average amount you’re expected to use if it is.(I generally try to avoid using more then 5-10 meta-progression consumables myself)

4:Having a more convenient spot to check out the character’s starting weapons other than the respective major update would be nice.(even just throwing it onto your Hetja’s quest site would be fine for me) A lot of the items noticeably re-contextualize the character, including each of Hetja’s individual classes(which you have to pay gold just to see otherwise).

5:This is mostly a Dorothy thing, but Holy water feels pretty bad when compared to the general norm of starting items. To a much lesser extent this also applies to Marcia’s Nimbus boots. I’m pretty much fine with the other starting kits outside of those two, though there is a fairly large range of item quality depending on the character.

So I decided that I’d “challenge” myself by doing something I didn’t even really think possible, and honestly as I get farther and farther in, I’m starting to think its not. The challenge was to see if I could recruit all 18 characters, maximize stats, and get something like 50,000 Gold in a single Hard Mode run of the Labyrinth for shits and giggles. (For reference, I’m not new to the game, but this is a new save. I deleted my old save to start this challenge last night).

As you can see here, I maximized my stats, namely abusing Paragon, Blossom, and Aptitude in order to have 120% Growths in all of my stats, allowing me to easily hit the stat caps (I don’t know if the Luck thing is a graphical bug or if the cap is intended to be like 30 and it just went up to 40 for whatever reason). I used Angelic Robes & Body Rings purchased in shops to hit the max HP (120) and Con caps. Hawkeye, Dazzle, & Double Lion were obtained shortly before Chapter 20, and Nihil was just recently obtained.

Meanwhile, here I am with 15/18 characters in lockup, with 3 still unaccounted for. I don’t know if the Labyrinth generates fifteen that they’ll throw at you or if I’m just getting really unlucky (honestly this is the main reason I’m making the post. I just figured I’d throw in the stat screen & skills since people were doing that too). That’s all from me.

Is it possible? Yes. I’m unsure if this is something I would actually want to implement though.

It is difficult to make every shop possibility helpful in every scenario. With a shop inventory limit of 20, I would only be able to dedicate 2 slots to each type of item (Sword / Lance / Axe / Bow / Anima / Light / Dark / Monster / Consumable / Accessory). While making that change would make the shops more consistent in having something you /could/ use, it greatly reduces the amount of options.

This is something I have been considering. There are already limits on the amount of fish you can fish up per trip to the hub as well as time gating on the growable fruits. A cap on the amount of hub consumables you can use per run could work with some of the new Hard Mode changes being worked on right now. I’ll give it some thought.

Good idea, I’ll add starting equipment to the Class Info during Character Creation.

The last two spots at the end, next to Sophia, are unused. If a unit has already been recruited, whether that be in a previous run or by using a password, they will not appear in that enclosed section to lessen the load on VRAM. Since you said this was a new save, I’m assuming you either got Astrid in a previous run or unlocked them at the start of the game for Paragon.

On my latest run with Catherine, I noticed this Bonewalker has a steel lance it can’t use.

Folks, vote for characters from underrepresented games!

I did neither of those things. It was my first run of the Labyrinth with just a basic cookie cutter build. I got Aptitude, Blossom, and Paragon through the randomized Skill Scrolls with save state manipulation because I am a dirty dirty cheater. Everything after those three I ran with what the game gave me once my stats were maxed out. The only one I was missing was Astrid and I got her immediately in the run I’m currently doing, bumping myself down to Normal Mode so as to money grind a bit more.

Ah, I see, that makes sense. Astrid was just being shy. Very shy from the looks of it.

Made an account just to vote in the new character poll! Gonna take the chance to also spread Lorenz and Peri propaganda. I’m used to being the minority considering I really honestly like both of them, but please consider voting for either one of them! Even if you don’t like them as units or characters, think of the funny personal skills they could have! Or how fun it could be to see portraits like theirs done in the GBA style! For real though, I’ll be happy just to be getting new characters whoever they are but if you’re unsure of which Cav you want why not consider one of them? Looking forward to the results!

Finished a run with Gatrie today. With that, I’ve finished normal mode runs with all of the currently playable characters. I look forward to having more characters to do runs with in the future.

I made a tier list based on my impression of how easy it was to finish a clear with each character.

Tier List

These ratings are 100% real, objective, valid, and indisputable. :sunglasses:

If you’re wondering, I used bonewalker Hetja. I didn’t reclass him, but in other classes I’m sure he’s better/needs less support. I actually like Bonewalker Hetja being so weak, as it creates a nice emergent narrative about Hetja finishing the labyrinth with support from his friends.

for the polls… I want more modern representation, but i feel like offering lorenz for a cav is like… i mean he could be, but hes obviously a mage, and for lord… putting corrin here, i think we are all interested in corrin as some like dragon class, not lord. Id love more fates characters though.

Hopefully edelgard is “Axe Lord” not “Lord”. I’d love to see a dragon poll, corrin vs myrr vs some FE9 dragon vs …Tiki?

For the poll I voted for the non represented series (except for myrmidons, all the series there are already represented).
Currently the hack has Elibe, Magvel, Tellius and Fodlan representation (FE 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 15(3Hs)). So that leaves us with Archanea/Akania/Akanea (FE 1, 3, 11, 12) Valentia (FE 2 and Echoes), Jugdral (FE 4 and 5), Ylisse (FE 13), Fates (FE 14) and Elyos (FE 16 (Engage)) out of the mainline games (Non FEH, Cipher, Warriors, SMT) missing representation.
How Hetja wishes to implement each of the characters is up to them. I doubt they would of made Edelgard primarily a sword lord considering in their source game, the lord can use all 4 of the classical physical weapon types (Sword, Lance, Axe and Bow). I am curious about balancing around having a Manakete character though. I feel like dragonstones from the GBA era are pretty strong and are only balanced by their lack of availability.

Reminder that the new character poll ends in three weeks. if you haven’t voted yet, do it soon!

Starting next week, I’ll be taking a break from development until the beginning of December. I’ll still pop in when the poll is over to announce the results. I anticipate that I won’t be able to add the new characters in time for the holidays, so expect new characters and the hard mode rework to release some time in the new year.

Also, thanks for all the downloads! I missed celebrating 420 and 666 downloads, so here’s to everyone who has played the game so far. :tada:

So, when is a good time to stop and head back to the main hub? I have all the characters now.
