[FE8] [Complete] The Dark Amulet v1.6 (08/08/2024)

I think the amount of reinforcements was just too much and allowed certain units to snowball too much, while making the early game harder than the mid game as a result (Weathering a ton of reinforcements can be challenging, but also makes your units stronger long term). So to me the changes sound alright, should probably result in a more constant difficulty curve.

Since version v1.5 changes the feeling of the game’s balance somewhat considerably in a few chapters, I’ve actually left the download link to v1.4 live. So you can always use that link to download v1.4 again if v1.5 is not to your liking. I’m happy with the changes, but they might not be for everyone.

Reductions to reinforcements were generally minor. Usually one turn less (or even just one or two units less) of reinforcements to make it less likely to feel bogged down in early chapters.

Ya know…that’s exactly what happened. Early chapters I struggled here and there but by the middle I was like I am army of one man armies be crushed beneath my blade lol. Even Miley was a one man army, I never had an archer MVP and she was mine for lots of chapters. Not even Innes did that.

I’d be worried if Miley was useless at the point. She IS the best archer in the game, and the only one for a long time. You are going to need her no matter what.

Yeah, I wish I knew that on my first playthrough. I ended up benching her and Shorn in favor of other units, and I ended up having a monster of a Donnel instead. Definitely made for some tough maps later on when they were force-deployed, but oh well :person_shrugging:

People tend to choose Miley as ‘the archer’ of their team for pretty solid reasons - great availability, pretty good growths, force deployed in Chapter 18. As a result, a lot of people ignore Donnal. The man has huge strength growth and the best mobility in the game. He can literally cross rivers, snipe enemies, and then cross the river again to return to safety. He’s amazing.

Don’t sleep on the Donnal.

Yeah, he’s alright… But that Galen x Miley convo is insane, too good to leave them out. There is no way I’m ever benching her… Also, her C support with Galen was very funny (nice rump)

Thank you, please keep that up. Far, far too many hacks don’t.

Both Miley and Donnal are very good. Miley’s prf is great and Light Weight is right at home on an archer, Donnal’s got a similarly amazing prf and absolutely insane maneuverability, and the map design and enemy strength of the hack means archers are far from a liability. The only reason I can see not to use both is not wanting two bow units, and that’s more of a you problem than anything to do with the game.

So would you say 1.5 is easier than 1.4?

I would say the early game of v1.5 is maybe slightly easier than v1.4, as there are a few less enemy reinforcements in the early maps. v1.5 is definitely much harder than v1.4 in chapter 12 to chapter 20 (basically the mid game) due to increased enemy stats and weapon loadouts. v1.5 is very similar to v1.4 in the late game maps (chapter 21 onwards).

Overall, v1.5 is harder than v1.4 as it is more difficult to snowball into invincibility by creating units so strong that enemies never hit them or do zero damage to them. This is probably still possible, but tougher to pull off. v1.5 is meant to be consistently challenging through all chapters.

Funnily enough I decided to bench her on this second playthrough of mine and use Donnal instead lol

I think this is a great version. There are many things worth experiencing, I like the way the author built the game. Thank you for the game, hope there will be more good versions.

I created an account just to congrats this awesome project. I really loved the story, the characters and the fact that I used every unit through the game is something that you can’t see very often.

Hey, first of all I wanted to thank you for making a FE hack that gives me the best and most accurate feelings of being a kid discovering FE8 again. You managed recreating that experience for me like no other hack has managed, and in more adult and critic eyes - your hack surprassed the originals (in terms of story, stage design, features and more), without taking away the unique charm they had. That’s my experience and opinion.

Right now I’m on ch16 and bless every moment (even though that paladins soft-defeat was clever and nasty as heck  ). I just want to report a game freezing bug I thumbled into (twice. I reproduced it to check out and it consistant). It happened when the handaxe fighter in the corner fight Sophia and miss her. just as she dodge the game freezes and I have to start over the stage (first time he initiated battle, and second time he countered. in both the game froze the moment Sophia dodged).

I tried to google and I found one topic that may be a reference, but without any solution:
https:// feuniverse. us/t/handaxe-issue/21436
[and I guess Sophia using the Mage Knight original class, so I’m not sure about the ‘custom class’ part, but that was my only lead].

Good luck and thank you for letting me experience the beauty of the old FE again

This is up there as maybe my favorite hack. Some non spoiler thoughts:

Well written genuinely likable cast, there were plenty of characters I wish I could have used but just ran out of deployment slots. The lack of duplicate classes and the amount of personal weapons means that you feel rewarded for who you’ve picked.

Story writing is solid even if I didn’t love the main lord. And the ending made me really excited to see what you make next!

The hack is polished! Which isn’t a huge deal to some but for me that can be make or break, good mugs, good sprites, solid writing it just all comes together.

Game play is bette then solid although by end game I did feel super strong and most enemies were less then a threatening. Also the amount of game over units made me prefer to play with every few turn save states—I know some people hate that but IDK it dosnt feel like it wants to be ironmaned.

Definitely taking some inspiration for my hack that will never see the light of day!

About the support system, I thought we were limited like in GBA games so I kind of waited to see more characters before deciding what support I would go for.

Now I realise that I may have shoot myself in the foot, do the characters continue to gain support point even if you don’t see their C support right away…or does the support point gained are wasted until you saw the C support…may I have lock myself of several potentiel A support because I waited several chapter to see the C support?

Support points are frozen until the C support is activated.

So if I want paired ending I may as well restart now…Kind of suck I was already at chapter 16.

That’s unfortunate, but look at it this way - now you get to enjoy the first half of the game twice! :stuck_out_tongue:
