Finished part 1 on Normal. I’m liking the hack so far.
Here’s my opinion of the units gameplaywise (I’d rather talk about them at the end of each part to avoid an even longer post when I complete part 4):
Summary
Storch: He kinda started only leveling HP and Res at the beginning but, thankfully, he ended picking the pace later, becoming a rather reliable unit. And Charm is really useful for support.
Esfir: Thieves are vital in this game thanks to their utility. And Pass is a good skill for a thief. Combatwise, her strenght leaves a bit to be desired, sadly.
Vagelis: He’s a Bow Fighter. Which means that he’s an archer but with the stats of a Fighter. In other words, he hits hard (when he hits), and has a high Con that allows him to use good bows to hit even harder without spd penalty (the hit rate, on the other hand…). He’s definitely an interesting unit. You might want to keep him in Charm’s range, though.
Arckady: He’s fast. And he can reduce the damage taken by nearby female units, which is nice. That’s about it, though, since he’s kinda lacking in every other department.
Lera: One of the MVP. I’m thankfull for Miracle, since it allowed me to use her in ways I’d not use a squishy mage normally, and the enemy’s lower Res certainly helped her.
Natsuko: Having a pegasus with swords is nice. It was always annoying to use the normal ones when there’s so many axe users in the early game. Her skill also helps in getting doubles, even if the condition can be annoying at times. She’s a bit lacking in both Strength and Con, which is not exactly unusual for her class. Ended benching her due to how many swords you get in this part, though.
Larisa: The other MVP. She’s tanky, she’s surprisingly fast and she has a really good prf. Strong Riposte is also an useful skill for an armor.
Marlen: He looks solid, and with a good prf, but he was underleveled after sitting out of chapter 1-6 and the ones after that, so he ended sitting in the bench with Natsuko.
Onisim: A healer with actual defense? That’s something you dont see everyday. And with Live to Serve, you dont have to worry about healing him. Also, the Spur Res is nice, especially when combined with Barrier.
Nazar: He has all the strenght Arckady is missing and, while his speed isn’t as high as Arckady’s, he has far better Con. Could’ve used him, but I had units that interested me more.
Dewi: A healer with high mobility. …I’ll say more once I promote her. Hopefully.
Sri: Has good hit rate and a horse. That’s all.
Gunnar: He’s like a pegasus, but he traded the horse for some Con, which allows him to hit harder than most pegasus could hope to. It’s also great to have a melee unit that can trade blows with a mage without ending half dead. Though, as Nazar, he ended being benched in favor of other units.
Osane: Poor Osane. I like her, but… I feel she lacks something to make her shine. You can use her, and she definitely can get her job done, but she has to compete with Onisim and Dewi in the healer department and Lera in the mage department… and she doesn’t have anything that makes her particulary stand out compared to them. Also, while the excuse of dark magic being expensive would work in the main fe games, here Flux is cheaper than a fricking Heal, so…
Bosco: A lance infantry with good Strength and decent Defense. Sadly, he’s making company to Nazar and Gunnar.
Ruslan: Reposition is neat. … That’s all I used him for in the two chapters I deployed him.
Lajos: Prepromote with some amazing bases that allow him to work without any kind of effort. It’s a godsend if you aren’t using the other two archers, they didn’t get particulary good levels or they died, and even if not, he still does a pretty good job. You might need to replace him eventually, though, since his growths are kinda lackuster.
Titus: I like the concept, but I wish he had either a bit more speed or a bit more bulk. And I hate when Dire Thunder misses.
Helga: She’s exactly how I want my wyverns to be. The hit rate buffs and avoid debuffs are also quite useful.
Otilie: Like Esfir, but with Acrobat instead of Pass… and lower Con.
Zoya: Didn’t use her.
Hollace: Didn’t use him.
Honeydew: An all-round improvement from Arckady. Doubling Myrmidons with your axwielder sure is fun.
Sarka: Another prepromote with some nice bases. A decent filler, especially if you didn’t use Marlen.
Good catches - I’ll fix the text. One-sided text is caused by the Sri side of the event not linking anywhere. This will be fixed in an upcoming update. Got a lot of small text fixes to make in a doc recently, and will be making those and a few other fixes soon.
There is a bug in 4-E’s preparation screen when you check the map and go back to the preparation screen and go back again to check the map but instead takes you back to the title screen. I didn’t get the bug when i just went back and forth the prep screen and the map but when I switched out some characters and go back to the map that’s when it takes me back to the title screen. I’m on the latest patch.(8-jul-20)
Another issue here, I believe. Most enemy units at the start of 3-2 have danger points over them, even though most just have standard weapons. It disappears when selecting an enemy though.
Another thing: I know you’ve received some complaints regarding the lack of cusses and even words like ‘damn’ and ‘hell’ being pretty uncommon. I generally haven’t had any problems with this, but this line by Tompkins is jarring; while he is an ex-noble, this seems far too polite for a bandit chief:
P.S. I love your use of Mario Tennis music for battles in part 3! I didn’t play the N64 version but the GBC version is one of my fav games and the same tune is used for the Island Open semi-final match. Same goes for Ape Escape
The DKC2 Forest Interlude in the log map was cool too, but slightly too loud. I found myself often switching between two levels of volume.
If you’re fast enough you can collect all the chests and escape. I was able to do this on hard mode(with some cheese) and decided to stay a while and rip off some free xp
Just wrapped up 4-3 and I have to say I love these save NPC chapters - they’re prolly my favorite out of the game because of the side objectives. This is probably my favorite chapter with a few left to go because of all the stealables that you might miss if you’re not paying attention (FYI my Esfir has 16 con now so you can pretty much steal anything in the game haha).
Only criticism is I kinda wish the bosses were a bit more memorable, especially in these chapters where you have other objectives going on, the boss kinda seems lost in the background. Not sure if there’s a way through the text to make them more interesting. For example with Darien I felt no connection to him and was more interested in the horses.
So, I’m about 10 chapters into the game and I am absolutely loving it. My question is, is there a sort of character guide at all? Like to see all who’s in it, their stats, what their promotions are, what skills they learn, etc? If not, is there a way I can check the game’s sources or anything to see what they are?
