[FE8] [Complete] Fire Emblem: Hope's Trail (1.32)

Yes they are, they were added in 1.21. They are just there to hint at the characters’ background and lore and provide small boosts; they don’t grow or have support conversations like traditional supports.

I’ve been playing this hack for several hours straight now (a rare feat, as I usually get bored and give up after one or two chapters), and so far I’m in love with it!

I’m strategically challenged so usually I have troubles with hard romhacks, but I think this one was very fun despite the hardship. That is until the slaughters that were the thunder temple and its preceding chapter, which left me with only 4 units to complete the desert chapter. Needless to say, I am not in the best position to continue this playthrough and am heavily considering restarting over, to my great frustration

The only specific feedback I can offer on level design is that Ch1’s enemy placement felt kind of uneven. While my three starting characters in the bottom left part of the map had zero enemies in range for several turns, the three units I gained in the top-right corner were pretty much surrounded from the start, leading to the death of a character just one turn after recruitment (so far the only instance of this happening).

With all that said, I can’t stress enough how good this hack is! I can’t wait for future updates!

Also, if you need help with portraits, I’d be glad to help! (I’ve already done Leth and Juno’s portraits)

Just finished the game on Normal for the first time. (v1.21)
I’d tried to clear the game 5 times before on previous versions, but the Thunder Temple kept owning me because I wasn’t sure what strategy I should take - the baels are lopsidedly strong with seal speed, which meant if I didn’t have a high-mov unit run straight to the right side dude, that’s a loss condition. lol

The stars aligned for me btw:

I'm so evil

(I also had Tactician Tragan rallybot for him lol)

Delemor was my non-Aspect MVP. I would have wiped on Nus if not for a certain spoiler unit that comes with a few others, by the way, and the dude probably can’t touch Nus on Lunatic. rip, probably should have planned better.

I love roguelike/ironman projects so this immediately caught my attention. Gave it a try on Normal non Chaos mode and got to the fire temple on my first try. Despite being a bit worried the game might be too easy at first, the difficulty ended up being alright.
I definitely reccomend everyone to give this hack a try and would count it among my top 3 favorite hacks so far. Phenomenal work EAALen!

Some highlights and bugs i stumbled across:

Where is the extra Res coming from?

The cavs on this map for some reason took 10 less damage from magic, despite having less Res than other enemies. No debuffs, skills, items or other shenanigans were in play as far as i could see, so i was quite confused as to why this was the case.

Gorgon eggs

Gorgons which spawn out of eggs on the fire temple map with the dragon boss get another one of whichever weapon they started with. Not quite sure if this is a bug, as you may wanted to show the player what weapon they would wield upon hatching, but i thought it was worth mentioning

I didn’t prioritise killing the summoner on this map, but was still able to get 3 chests and get wary fighter. Cost me my starter avery and my dancer though.

My main team afterwards. Tragan essentially became my lord, got the Supply skill, and carried me by just overall being pretty good on every front. Kira was an absolute unit killer but extremely squishy. Rogue anna was suprisingly tanky and probably by second best unit. Instapromoted Rufus was also pretty nice.

After some more deaths i got beaten at the fire temple due to Tragan being 35% stoned, and some unlucky crits.

Lastly: i personally disliked the water temple on my first try. The boss was by far the hardest to beat due to being relatively tanky, but also having a magical brave crit tome. I ended up pure watering the mage trainee turned priest because she was the only one who could reliably take the damage. Which went on up until the boss actually broke her weapon, which wasn’t even my intention. I probably did something wrong but if this aligns with other player’s experiences you may wanna consider nerfing her slightly.

Res: Have you checked the terrain that those enemies are on? I can see what I think are glimpses of the dark purple tiles under the Cav and General, so I would be willing to bet that’s what’s doing it, just going off of context clues.

Yeah, the res tiles are the reason the right side is annoying and I prefer to mangle the summoner in 2-3 turns rather than deal with it or make a mad dash to the center LOL

A few bugs I found
I don’t know if it’s intentional, but this character has Dozla’s death quote

Infinity Master Seal. Got with Densel critting the mage general at the top of the thunder temple. Never got this bug until the newest update.

Infinity chest key. Also on the thunder temple

She’s able to use light magic with this, but only up to shine??

I don’t have an image for this one, but after I beat Sergei on my current run (newest update), I didn’t get a new unit.

And some personal notes since I’m currently on my fourth attempt.

Up until this run, I’ve had a pretty hard time making use of Densel in the mid to late chapters. My current run has him at his best as a Warlock with a Luna tome.

The thunder temple continues to be the bane of my existence, but the best solution I’ve found so far is to rush your highest movement units to the summoners asap.

Orchid, at least from the one time I’ve used her, is just plain bad. Her skill is basically aptitude with a exp debuff, so the most utility I got out of her was making her a thief. Just didn’t have the opportunity to train her past the trainee promo because she’s too frail.

Overall this hack is probably one of my favorite ones to date. It’s the only one I’ve immediately gone to replay, and that’s mainly because of how varied it feels. New updates add some fun stuff too, like the support bonuses and the little lore. Not entirely sure how this will all load out on the forum, considering I’m typing it, but I’m not too great with formatting, since I browse this site on phone.

Thank you for the thorough feedback & bug spotting! Grr, I thought I’d fixed the Thunder Temple infinite item bug but I guess not :sob: Do you happen to still have a .sav file from the start of the map so that I can try reproducing it?

Pretty sure I still got one. You got an account I can send it to, or do you want me to dump it here?

I’m not sure if attaching .savs to FEUniverse posts is possible, but if not you can send it by email to leozein89@gmail.com

I can't stop doing it

I managed to get a speed level before fighting Nus so he didn’t get doubled
My man was instrumental in beating the fire temple, chokepointing the bottom left dude was a godsend. Although I almost lost my run because I used Orchid and Blossom ATE exp from my other dudes(Chaos mode meant I had no guaranteed thief and I rolled her on the prologue, so I had her as my starter)

Next time I get Kerzil AND Delemor you know what’s going down.
(You should probably put them in the same pool… Relics of the Fallen update is a bit much :flushed:)
Although if you don’t get Pavise on that chapter’s village it’s not as crazy. I guess getting lucky enough to roll all three should be a reward LOL

That is such a monster of a unit oh my lord

Unfortunately SkillSystems has a limit of five skills (+class skills if your class has them) which means if you’re planning to make him your Emblem Knight, there isn’t enough space for Great Shield, Aegis, Hero(Kerzil’s personal), Rightful Hero, Pavise and Canto.

I did foresee this issue and make Nihil the class skill for Emblem Knight instead of Canto, so you’ll always get that at least, which means (if I properly understand how it works) you wouldn’t get Canto if you promoted him after already having 5 skills. Though maybe you wouldn’t need it at that point lmao

Overwriting Canto is the goal, yeah. Since it’s not that useful in the final map unless you put Supply on and that’s not the purpose of this particular man.
He is a holy man and he will beat you senseless

Edit: I think he died to a Waste crit once and it got me so frazzled I broke my “no rewind unless you get crit by like a 2%” rule, which has me learning the lesson that I should put a Hoplon Guard on him :smiling_imp:

The game crashes if you try to promote Jules and go to warshipper

Whoops - seems I forgot to give warshippers an Anima animation, that’s why. I’ll fix this for the next patch, but for now you can promote him by just making sure he has a staff equipped when he uses a master seal.

Finally finished my first run. I got to say Tenyu was really helpful, Chit boost, Luna, and Nill are awesome

I completed the game a few times, so before moving on to Difficult mode, I decided to savescum some rolls to see how broken I could make things.

Edit: Wait why did RetroArch also screenshot the UI ARGH

My favorite builds

If I’d saved the Angelic Robe and remembered to steal the Talisman, Delemor would have freakin’ owned. As is, though, Hero didn’t become active for enough time to be relevant. The sheer amount of damage nullification was funny though.

Wary Fighter exists for Dana tbh.
Yes, the Shadowgift + Fury + Life and Death is exactly what you think it’s for. Adding Vantage would have been really strong but I felt bad killing Xela on purpose.
Resolve lol

Endgame got a lot easier when I started stocking up on Light Runes and giving everyone Supply. Pray for me for Difficult mode and then Maniac

You are a better tactician then me. I had to savescum to when

Glad to see you’re all having fun with the whacky skill builds possible with Relics of the Fallen. Those are some terrifying units :confounded:

I’m thrilled to announce that as of patch 1.23, all named characters now have palettes! Four talented people contributed to this monumental effort, those being @Shark3143 , @Genuine_Angus_B33F , @Selk , and especially @TheGoldenGold who came through with like half of the game’s palettes in less than a week somehow (wtf   )

Full 1.23 changelog

NEW CONTENT:

  • New Dana, Jaime, Belle, Travis, Marina, Skye, Curtis, Yuri, Dallas, Edgar, Zaid, Dayle, Mariam, Nuri, Mana, Iris, Rufina, Kai, Karissa, Lia, Barok, Brent, Nobu, Balthazar, Parces, Von Krell, Garriett, Blaise, Nus, Artemia, Juno, Diane, Trace, Travis, Orchid, Marius, and Jules palettes from Yoko
  • New Jericho, Kalti, and Nellie palettes from Selk
  • Five characters now have battle conversations with the final boss (spoilers: Rella, Densel, Avery, Rufus and Zor’tix)
  • Zor’Tix now joins with a third prf weapon, the “Gleaming Eye,” which unlocks at A-Rank dark. Unlike his other eyes, it has limited uses (20).

BUGFIXES/POLISH:

  • Fixed a crash which sometimes occurred when Jules would promote into a warshipper
  • Fixed a crash which occurred when tricksters would miss with a staff at melee range
  • Fixed a bug which was causing the Thunder Temple wildcard to not spawn in vanilla mode
  • Fencers’ level cap is now correctly 10 instead of 20
  • Von Krell’s constitution now correctly displays as 25 instead of 27(-2)
  • Supports no longer compete for space with weapon ranks on units with 5+ weapon ranks
  • Marius’ death quote is no longer Dozla’s

BALANCE CHANGES:

  • Falcoknights gain 1 additional speed on promotion (1 → 2)
  • Warshippers gain 1 additional resistance on promotion (3 → 4)
  • Marius gains 2 additional skill when promoting to a fighter (0 → 2)
  • Marius gains 1 additional hp when promoting to a brigand (4 → 5)
  • Marius defense growth: 25 → 20
  • Defiance: Avo bonus 30 → 25
  • Vigilance: Avo bonus 20 → 15
  • Teeth: Base luck +3
  • Ash: Base luck +2, Base con +1

I would also like to make a call-to-action regarding the now infamous Thunder Temple item bug. Sometimes, when killing an enemy and receiving a droppable item in this map, it will gain hundreds of uses. I believe this is related to the skill scroll chests, but frustratingly it’s been impossible to replicate on my end. If anyone can replicate this bug and help me troubleshoot it, I will be extremely grateful.
