Honestly, if you have the change, get an Everdrive Mini if you can. It tends to be the most reliable cartridge when it comes to games not glitching and the cartridge dying for no valid reason.
It’s also the most expensive and the delivery might be an issue with the Canada Post strike
I imagine it works pretty well, but I’m a bit picky, and I’ve decided I kinda wanna have single-game carts and flash them myself, so my plan (which I’m currently doing more research on) is to buy a Joey Jr from BennVenn and flash a bunch of bootleg GBA carts with games
If I’m doing one game per cart then the Everdrive is absurdly overpriced. Mind you I don’t hold that against them since it’s obviously not meant to just hold one game, but it doesnt quite serve my purposes here
The Everdrive and most modern flashcarts holds a mini SD card it reads ROMs from. You can stack as many ROMs onto that SD card as it can hold, and play them all from that cart.
Personally, I recommend the GB Operator over the Joey Jr. if you can find one. It’s what I use. It’s also the same price iirc.
EDIT: So, I learned something new. Apparently, Joey Jr. is better at writing ROMs to fake cartridges, but the Operator has a built-in authenticator + easier save back-ups. If you’re planning to only do fake carts, go with the Joey Jr.!
yeah, im aware. and im sure thats great, but its not what i personally want. i want to own a bunch of carts that each have one game on them, to really emulate the feeling of the old days of having to switch carts to play different games
is it inconvenient as hell? absolutely. but is it cool to me for some inconceivable reason? yeah lol
I will say though, be careful which bootleg carts you buy. It’s fairly common in the game repro scene for the cheaper carts not to have save functionality – you’ll be looking at $30+ for a good fake cart to burn onto.
got it off facebook marketplace, and with the power of a Joey Jr and a bootleg Yugioh cart I’ve managed to get Sacred Stones running on it! gonna play it at work today im so excited
In other news of considering to buy a GBA… My brother. He recently bought a copy of Final Fantasy: The Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube… But if you want to do multiplayer for the original GCN version you need a GBA. My cousin has a GBA so that might work but he might buy his own.
Fortunately for my wallet, I don’t have much reason to want either of those consoles. I’ve got a 3DS if I ever get the itch to play a DS game, and a Wii if I ever wanna play Gamecube games
That, and the main reason I wanted a GBA was to play my favorite game ever made (FE7) on actual hardware. There aren’t really any games in the DS or GC library that I’m even remotely as passionate about (even if I did enjoy playing Mario Kart as a kid at my neighbor’s house)
Fair enough. I’ll always advocate for Path of Radiance and the original Wind Waker on Gamecube but there’s no cheap way to get them outside of modding your Wii.
Nice! always fun to see the old GBA stuff :3
Still have my own but I don’t often use them as much… really need to ^^;
and, also has the original GBA as well.
I’m still in the middle of an FE8 run but when I finish it/get bored I’m gonna start loading hacks onto this thing. Only downside is I can’t stream them (either to my friends on Discord or an actual streaming platform) but hey there are plenty of hacks out there, I don’t have to show all the ones I play
