Yeah so like Gaiden and Mystery but with some axes bundled in with swords then?
Mercenaries get blades while armored knights get polearms. Works out pretty well! WT would be ditched entirely but it wouldn’t matter with this class setup.
Axes already are the strongest weapon type in WT-centric games. Hence why I’ve been mixed on them recently. Bundling the Axe Fighter class into the Armored Knight kills two birds with one stone by turning two mixed-viability classes into one effective class with a clear purpose.
Manakete is the worst class. They have only one weapon type and there’s often very little variation within that weapon type. It also does not interact with the weapon or magic triangles in any way. Manaketes also have the effect that people feel the need to shoehorn them in their hacks while doing in my opinion too little to address the fundamental issues or to introduce variation.
I’m not sure if Taguel or such are much better, but it often tends to be either “transform to dragon” or nothing at all. What if for once we got a beast Taguel that, if deployed regularly, levels up like normal (and can use bites and claws with varying effects), but bench them for long enough and they become a starving Wendigo with its own stats spread and class-specific skill?
The actual worst class in the series has to be bow locked classes cuz they all need at least one or two units to be reliable unless they’ll be completely trapped by surrounding melee units and their only whole purpose is chipping damage and backup anti flier but if you play these classes on the enemy turn they literally cannot do anything.
This thought process largely comes from how much GBA/Tellius have been centered around in community discussion. And even then, swords are arguably the best or second best weapon type in fe6. By and large swords have been fine, and very rarely have been whollistically worse than other weapon types. ESPECIALLY in romhacks which usually seek to balance or tip the scales on weapon balance.
Lol, Marth is only really bad in 11, hes among the best in both 1 and 3 and decently capable in 12 too.
I know marth is good in the ye olde games, but he has no promo so he gives out no serotonin, also you may want to discard my fe6 opinion, there is a reason i like sophie hahahaha
Swords are kinda weird tbh. In fe1-fe4, they’re the only good weapon you can reasonably double with. But as time went on and lances and axes got a boost, they became less dominant. Honestly, another big part of their power loss is their lack of exclusive weapons. Killing edge’s were the only high crit weapons (except for killer bows) for a a few games, then other weapons got killer weapons, making the sword less powerful. Magic swords also fall into this category. They used to be the only way for your non mage units to deal magic damage. But bolt axes, flame lances, and others have again made the sword lose some of its power. Don’t get me wrong, swords are still plenty viable to use, it’s just they used to be even better simply because most other weapons were bad.
Now as an actual answer too your question, yes. Because sword masters.
I mean, yeah?
Swords aren’t bad by any means, they’re actually a pretty good catch-all weapon. Even swordlocked classes like mercs and myrms tend to be powerhouses. Cavs would actually be worse without swords (asuming nothing else would take their place). Being locked to only one type of weapon already limits your options pretty significantly, and the promoted classes that are still locked to one weapon type can usually do their thing really well.
That and basically grounding wyvern riders would cramp their style just a little.
Honestly, when it comes to custom campaigns, bows are usually better as a weapon type than any of the melee weapons. Hackrom archers mop the floor with hackrom myrms, fighters and soldiers on the whole.
