My project is now in Beta, with all that’s left to do, besides play-testing, being to write and then enter in a massive number off support conversations. However, the Rom is currently sitting at 30.372 MB, and I’m not sure if I’ll have space for all of them. I tried doing a ROM rebuild, but it always fails to complete, getting stuck on a random text file for some reason. Is there something I may not be doing right, and is there any other way to get more free space, in a way that won’t create a huge number of problems?
Personally, I’d say do not rom rebuild if you can afford it. When my project hit the max I decided to just manually redo everything from scratch. Imports help a lot but it’s been long and tedious, but I’ll take tedium over the terror of stuff randomly breaking with no explanation tbh since that is always at risk to happen with rom rebuilds.
Text generally takes a fairly small amount of space. What you need to worry the most about in regards to romspace is sound, specifically WAV files and direct imported MIDIs from other GBA games. Battle animations are a distant second but generally nowhere close to WAVs/direct imports.
Even still it takes a lot of these to fill out a rom. Szechuan Sword is a 10-chapter project that replaces almost every sound effect with a WAV file imported in and gives every character voice lines, and is close to the romspace limit. Similarly, tossing in a few direct imports isn’t a big deal and they are only rom-threateningly huge if you brute force import a large quantity of them like in 4K/SP.
As a point of reference, my project originally used Four Kings (29 mb) as a base and I hit the 32 mb cap in the middle of making chapter 20. But that wasn’t adding text only, that was also huge swathes of eventing, patches, battle animations, songs, etc.
Thanks. Since text is all I really have left to add, I’ll see if I can fit it in before I worry about it any further.
