[FE8][Complete]Fire Emblem: War on Two Fronts v1.3 (Final Release)

After 18 months of on-and-off work, War On Two Fronts finally has its first complete release. Pending balance changes and minor bugfixes, the game is, for all intents and purposes, done.

Features
  • 23 chapters and a 2-part Endgame
  • 33 playable characters, each with their own unique base class, promoted class personal skill and supports
  • Units get one class skill and one promoted skill, meaning no generic enemy ever has more than 2 skills and no boss has more than 3
  • Separate wind, fire and thunder mages, with their own unit effectiveness depending on weapon type
  • Reduced weapon triangle, increased weapon stats and stronger enemies
  • Balancing dedicated to making each unit able to contribute, but with no one unit able to do it all
  • A scaling preparations shop replaces most armories and vendors normally seen in chapters
Story Summary

Set on the backdrow of a civil war 20 years prior that fractured the unified country of Saristen into five separate nations, War On Two Fronts follows the knights of Varden in their war against the highly highly militaristic nation of Karadon. Bereft of their leader, outmatched by their enemy and with a larger threat than any of them can possibly imagine looming on the horizon, their personal conflict threatens to plunge the whole continent into war once more.

Additional Resources (Contains Spoilers)
Secrets
  • Chapter 9 has a hidden Speedwing. Get either Cassius or Anna to the bottom left section before the final turn if you want a chance of obtaining it.
  • Whilst Chapter 15 may not have any hidden items, it does contain the Boots. Deploy Zaion and Nanami in the map together and view their conversation to obtain them. Additional conversations are present in Chapter 20, netting you another copy of Zaion’s personal tome, and Endgame-1, which only offers some additional character interaction.
  • Chapter 17 contains a hidden character, Auspan. To recruit him, have Lasara visit one of the houses. Any other character who visits will receive a hint on what you’re supposed to do. Recruiting Auspan will also reward you with the only obtainable Brave Axe.

Known Bugs
  • The Halberdier critical animation with the Flame Lance has some minor graphical glitches. This doesn’t appear to have any effect on gameplay.
  • The Ninja lethality animation will display the melee critical animation even when attacking at range. This has no effect on gameplay.
  • Characters with capped magic will still appear to be leveling magic if they gain additional levels. I’d fix this if I knew how, but it has no effect on gameplay.
  • This might not be a bug at all, but some supports might have text cut off. They shouldn’t, but I haven’t had the chance to check them all. If you notice any that do, please let me know.

Feel free to play through it and tell me what you think. There’s only one difficulty setting, which should offer a moderate challenge. Don’t worry about any content warnings, it’s family friendly enough.

Well, it was entertaining enough that i finished the demo so that probably says something all by itself :v

But here's some more feedback.

WarOnTwoFronts_04 WarOnTwoFronts_15 WarOnTwoFronts_21

I do feel that your maps tend to be rather big and empty. There are large open areas without much in the ways of terrain. You also start the player off outside enemy reach so it feels a bit passive, you just park yourself and wait for them to come to you. I feel like making them more dense would be beneficial.

Most of them also don’t have a lot of reason to push forward, making it very easy to just set up and let the enemies break against your killingest units.

WarOnTwoFronts_02

Sally’s personal skill is extremely good. Along with the leadership stars, she’s frequently facing single-digit hit rates from enemies and… that means she’s always getting these benefits. That’s not really a complaint, but i do have one, which is the name. It doesn’t have any kind of indication of what it actually does!

WarOnTwoFronts_10

There is something wonky going on with the combat platforms during the boss fight, like they’re partly transparent.

Also, giving him an elixir to drop is a little odd this early, you’re not going to need it for a long while and it’s basically just several weapons’ worth of money.

WarOnTwoFronts_22

The knight with the exclamation mark has a horseslayer, which is apparently also effective on birds? You should probably go with another word if you want it to retain effectiveness (don’t some game call it Ridersbane?) or remove the effectiveness if it’s supposed to be anti-horse.

WarOnTwoFronts_27

A couple maps have a lot of mounted archers with a lot of range, and in some cases short bows so you kind of have to be very careful which isn’t much fun. Would suggest limiting the 1% crit restart potential.

(I mean Sally basically neuters them but…)

WarOnTwoFronts_33

Anna comes with Steal… on a map that doesn’t seem to have anything stealable on it. Maybe i missed checking the units in the houses but… it would be nice if she had something to do with it?

WarOnTwoFronts_36

Varis’ anti-cavalry sword doesn’t seem to anti this guy.

WarOnTwoFronts_38

All in all i did quite enjoy the characters, the lord who’s not really seeing reason and his increasingly frustrated retainer has a lot of potential going forward, and what little we see of the others is pretty good, they have charm. Story wise it’s obviously not going too deep with only a few chapters but it seems promising enough.

Difficulty wise it’s quite easy so far, partly because turtling is effective, but even the village/brigand map didn’t really make me push very hard to save the houses. And reinforcements were generally not very threatening from what i saw.

(And i’m bringing this up in every new thread but i’m really not fond of the colour coded growths, i think it looks awful, and it’s really not needed since you have the press select to see actual numbers function.)

Thanks for checking out the hack, I’m glad you got through it without incident.

The problems

You’re probably right on the maps not having enough terrain. I was trying to strike a balance between having enough to utilise without needing to drag mounted units across massive clumps of forest tiles. Enemy density and placement has also been hard to gauge on my own, so I appreciate the feedback.

I did intend to rename and rebalance some of the skills in the hack, so I should probably push that forward now.

The elixir is just supposed to be a sellable item, with the option of using it in an emergency or holding it for later. Also, I’m not sure if I’m just missing it, but I’m not seeing the problem with the battle screen. I’ll have to look into it.

The horseslayer and other cavalry-effective weapons are supposed to be effective against griffon riders and griffon knights specifically. The weakness to fire magic is called out in dialogue, but there’s no easy way to explain the cavalry weapon weakness in-game. I’ll probably need to change the tooltips on the weapons.

The short bows probably do need to go, so they’ll be gone by next update.

There was supposed to be an enemy with a Secret Book to steal, but I completely forgot to put it in. My bad.

The chapter 3 boss has Nullify, which prevents effective damage.

To be honest, I don’t like the colour coded growths either, but I had just flat-out missed the patch that lets you change the colour options. Again, my bad.

Other than those issues, I’m glad you enjoyed what you played.

Haha, i totally blanked on checking his skills. V. smrt. As for the platform,

platform

it seems to have holes in the “front” part. You can see part of it sticking down in front of the guy’s nose, but the green stuff is the background.

wall

Compare to this where you can see the full “front” bit of the platform in front of Batta.

Edit: went back and captured video. Turns out it does have the wall part, it just looks a lot like the background when it goes past quickly.

wall2

I was sure that platform was supposed to be stone all over but apparently it just has a grassy bit to it.

All else aside, good luck with the rest of the hack, hopefully i'll get around to trying the next version too.

The patch has been updated to 0.2, with 2 additional playable chapters.
Saves from the previous version are mostly compatible; changes to character base stats won’t be applied, but it’s compatible otherwise.

V0.2 Changelog

Changelog:
Now goes up to Chapter 6, for a total of seven playable chapters.
Nomads and Griffon Riders have had their Short Bows taken away.
Coloured growth rates are gone.
Some dialogue has been rewritten for better consistency.
The Griffon Rider description now mentions their weakness to anti-cavalry weapons.
Fixed an issue with the Griffon Rider and Griffon Knight map animations
The monk in Chapter 3 now has a stealable Secret Book.
Maple now has base D rank swords and +1 strength.
Godfrey has +2 speed.

Dialogue wrong: if they can barely scratch me (wtf i defeated him alr), Varden (its the lands name) (Varis shd be I think?) dont stand a chance against them
The mages have decent growths compared to non MC characters lol
And I think theres axe mercenery map sprite out there
Doesnt boromias appear too early? Or the goal is to defeat him with 2 effective hits?

I presume you’re referring to Salford’s dialogue at the start of Chapter 5. The dialogue is not wrong, he’s referring to the Varden army as a group.
You say that the mages have decent growths as if they’re not supposed to. Most characters range around a 240-270% growth total.
There’s a male axe mercenary sprite, but no female one. I don’t really have the talent with graphics necessary to make a convincing one myself.
Boromias shows up on turn 10, and you can be out by the time he appears if you focus on getting Varis to the escape point. He shows up quickly to apply some pressure, and to give the player the opportunity to see if they can kill him before getting out.

nvm it’s just their hp growth is pretty low (so their def have pretty high lol)
what can she promote to? if it’s warrior or hero u can just make her a female fighter
IKR but the cavaliers had to be dealt with or Varis might die so (although I can just ignore him and get Varis outta there anyways) then I heavy blade critted on that dude

V0.3 has been released, going up to Chapter 8.

Changelog

-Now goes up to Chapter 8, for a total of 9 playable chapters.
-Fixed a bug where Joan had accelerated EXP gain instead of Cassius.
-Fixed several palettes.
-Fixed a bug where the Axe Mercenary sprite displayed dead pixels in the corner of the screen.

Oops. I’ll change that now, thanks.

Its blackscreen after saved at the start of ch8

The patch is now fixed, not sure how I missed that.

u didnt play test it?
or maybe its my emulator problem?

I had made a last minute change to the scene and accidentally put part of the event one space down from where it was supposed to be.

I played through the demo recently, and I really enjoyed it overall. Unfortunately, I didn’t look at the Known Issues part til just now, so I played through Hard Mode and can’t really comment on NM difficulty specifically. Here’s some feedback on what I played:

Gameplay

The maps definitely felt large, and there were some sections that didn’t really feel necessary, I guess. One example that comes to mind is in Chapter 5, the opening corridor extends really far, but there’s no reason to go that way, so it ends up just kind of being there. This also made the enemy density feel sort of inconsistent, as there were areas with basically no combat. I enjoyed what I played though.

On class specific skills, I don’t think Knights/Soldiers will ever use their repositioning skills, so it’s kind of a waste for them, gameplay-wise. I’m not sure what would replace them, but for now, it’s basically just there so the playable Solders/Knights can use it.

Story

I like the overall story, and I thought the father being a traitor thing was interesting, but the character you have to follow (Varis) is very insufferable, in my opinion. I’m sure this is intended, as other characters comment on it, but it’s difficult to feel invested when he’s just so obnoxious. I can’t think of a single redeeming character trait that he has. I’m assuming future story updates may make this section worthwhile, but I was constantly wondering while playing, “Why is anyone following this guy?”

As far as the side characters, Ferrus is the main standout as the only sane person there, really. Lasara feels just kind of there as she mostly sits on the sidelines watching Varis be a moron. Everyone else hasn’t been a noticeable factor in the story yet, so not much to say there. Also, the “enemy bosses retreating after dying” thing is not something I personally like very much as it makes confrontations less climactic, imo. And in the case of Varis’s dad, he retreats in a chamber where he’s completely cornered, which makes the player characters seem kind of dumb (how did he escape?)

There was also a bug, I think, where promoting Gawain will display that he learned Pivot, but he already has that skill. Overall, I enjoyed the hack so far, and I’m curious to see where the story goes.

Hi, glad you enjoyed what you played. Not sure how I missed such a massive number of typos, even after getting someone else to comb through it, but these things happen.

I’m fairly satisfied with the enemy density in the context of normal mode, but when I start making hard mode (probably packaged in with whatever version contains the final chapter) I’ll be cranking up the amount of enemies going around.

Some class specific skills are only there for the playable characters that use them to take advantage of them (i.e canto+, reposition, pivot)

As for the story bits, Varis isn’t really supposed to be a likeable character at the beginning, and the build as it stands doesn’t really have any of the bits that start making him tolerable. Hopefully by the end it’ll feel like he’s gone through some proper development. It’s supposed to be implied at the end of Chapter 5 that there are more soldiers than those that are seen on screen and Rowan slips away amongst the chaos, but it’s not really made clear, which is on me.

The issue with Gawain learning pivot even though he already has it is caused by me putting the class and learned skill the wrong way round.

Other than those gripes, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I seriously appreciate the screenshots, they were a big help.

so… chapter 11 / 12 is the real one?
if u name the prologue as chap 1 it wont mess up
defiant avoid is already very hard to trigger or maintain without risking losing a unit, the nerf makes it even worse (if you ignore that the skill is already bad except on enemy bosses)
laughs in wind discipline, which gives 10 hit and avo
And some mini portraits (the one without pressing R) looks distorted
No thiefs and outlaws cant steal so had to put Anna in to steal bruh
Imagine speedrunning a chapter in turn 3 becuz some cavs might die easilywotf_1594781964419
Zaion’s desc say hes son of former queen
But then he says he and the current queen has the same father?
Btw wind sword has much higher durability than other 2 magic weapons
Welp at least hint us when Varis gotta promote

The new patch is finally out, containing 14 playable chapters, as well as sweeping changes to the rest of the game. If you had played before, I recommend starting again.

Many maps have been redesigned - map sizes have been reduced, some maps have been visually touched up.

Speed now contributes half as much to Avoid.
The initial Prologue event has been rewritten.
