[FE8] [Complete] Fire Emblem: Afternoon Elibe

Good afternoon, everyone.

I am Nangar and I am releasing my FE8 ROM Hack 5 years in the making (2021-2026), Fire Emblem Afternoon Elibe.

Some background first:

Despite me never being on this forum before until recently, I have always been a silent fan of the Fire Emblem games to the point I made a few FEBuilder hacks here and there for fun as a hobby. Afternoon Elibe is the one I managed to fully complete with an on-and-off development during high school, it’s a big passion project of mine. Sorry, if this appears to just appear out of nowhere fully completed. My wish is to share my work with anyone in the community to know that the efforts were truly worth it. I hope anyone who kindly plays my silly little hack enjoys it as much as I did making it!

Gameplay Info:

Aims to be traditional-style Fire Emblem campaign most similar to the base FE8 with expanded upon features such as branch promotions and an emphasis on customizability with a decent amount of challenge map-by-map. Also inspired by the Fates trilogy for its map design that includes unique objectives and gimmicks. Overall, I hope that it is a laid-back experience with some moments that will get you fired up.

Features:

- 18 chapters + 4 gaiden chapters

- 43 playable units

- Skill System (with medium amount of use)

- Custom classes and weapons

- A very very long-written script of a colorful story semi-related to FE6 and FE7

- 14 completed support chains

- Exactly ONE route (originally going to have two routes just like FE8 did but scrapped with a bit of remnant left to it)

-Gameplay-Story integration

-Medium-level difficulty, player-phase focused (enemy quality is high but your unit’s quality is even higher)

Miscellaneous information:

- Intended difficulty is Difficult Classic. (with Casual Mode as an option)

- Estimated playtime is about ~25-35 hours.

Story info:

Set 1 year after the events of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and thus 21 years after the events of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Fire Emblem: Afternoon Elibe takes place in the continent of Elibe. Following our protagonist, Na-an Anne Thomas, a girl of unknown origin and most unconventional personality who goes on a trip all across Elibe from Etruria to Ilia to Lycia and more, encountering incredibly ridiculous scenarios of epic proportions and unique people, yet with little actual significance to the world as a whole. Many past characters and setting of Elibean canon will make appearances within this story.

However, there isn’t really a “main plot” because the story is built to be in an episodic format each chapter or split into arcs rather than focusing on a fully connected story.

Warning:

This game contains an extreme amount of dialogue and is generally very text-heavy (from me having too much fun writing the game) and uses an absurdist and nonsensical tone for storytelling for the sake of humor and comedy which may not appeal to everyone. Takes heavy inspirations and references from other game series such as Ace Attorney, Dragon Quest, Bravely Default, Yo-kai Watch, Disgaea, and many many others.

This is also hardly the most professional work out there in terms of writing and game design because I started making it when I was quite a bit younger. Bugs and mistakes are possible to encounter, and I will try to fix it if reported.

Congrats on the release! Traversible world map looks neat

I started playing your hack, but when you finish chapter 1 and the world map appears, you are sent back to the prologue.

Either i am high or in the screenshot second to last character palette is broken…

Hmm… I don’t think I’ve ever encountered that issue before in testing, could you give me the details? I can’t seem to recreate the issue either.

Did you get to the point where you could select the chapter 2 world map node or not?

Nope! That color scheme is intentional for the character in question!

No, I did not. When I ended ch1, the cutscene began, then it suddenly cut to black and the prologue began again.

I have a recording of it happening here:

Okay, after some testing I maybe figured out what caused it. It’s probably has to do with the game ending the movement before the unit reaches the destination node, so it just transfer you to the chapter of the other node being the prologue. The reason it happens for you and not me probably has to do with emulator difference or something that cause the timing difference.

I uploaded a patched .ups file in the release folder called “v1.1” that will hopefully fixes the issue by adding a lot more delay and removing the text. Also to carry over the save data, you can just name the new ROM the exact same as the original ROM.

Do you think it might be related to what you have your unit movement speed setting set to? Do you do your testing with it at its default value or set to Fast?

Isn’t there an febuilder command specifically for waiting until units have finished their movement? Or does it not work with world map movement?

Maybe?

To be honest, with the world map eventing, I almost left it completely the same as vanilla FE8 because I’m a bit scared that things will be ruined because all the commands seem very specific. Whatever solution works is enough, I suppose. (which I hope it DOES work without issue)

are all the supports/PE complete?

No for supports, only a select few (14 chains) are fully written to the end as of this build. Unlikely, that I’ll add anymore.

i played one chapter and its quite silly haha
I had no problem with the world map after chapter 1 though.
One thing i noticed but it feels like battle animations are faster than vanilla?

I find the unseriousness of this hack kind of refreshing. Don’t get me wrong i love my serious story rom hacks but after a long day just sitting down and having a few 4th-wall breaking lols is nice.

Thank you for the kind words! I hope you continue to enjoy the game more as it goes on, it is not that short after all.
