[FE8] [COMPLETE] FE: Dream of Five - Definitive Edition

Hello! ^^

I heard that this hackrom doesn’t display growth rates for your units, but that there was a website displaying them. Does such website still exist? If so, please share link!

it’s in the first post

Ook, hadn’t noticed the menu on the topmost left corner within the website, so I even thought that the growths might have been removed. Thank you! ^^

Soo… Is Tricia a trainee? If so, I guess she’ll automatically promote at level 10? Like the trainees in Cerulean Crescent (I don’t remember how it was for Sacred Stones, it was a lot of years ago xP)

She’s a normal t1 unit in terms of promotion style

Am I the only one who finds all the description of characters pretentious and at some point I feel like there’s no much text about nothing, totally uninspiring and boring from the start to the point, there’s only gameplay part I want to focus on, skipping all the dialogues? Maybe fact that English is not my first language doesn’t help, it’s too convoluted for my taste, I have no idea what author was smoking, writing all that poetry.

Some of us like poetry, but yes the experience of most that have played is likely very distinct from yours as it is our familiar language. I can only imagine the difficulty in having to interpret back literature into my native tongue. That being said there are a lot of other works out there that have a gameplay focus, maybe one of those would better suit you?

I’m playing the rebalance of FE7 that was posted a few days ago. The original FE7 story is pretty basic, we all know it. But the author of the hack has made enough changes to make the gameplay feel distinct from vanilla. I think you may enjoy this one if prioritize gameplay.

I personally think how the descriptions are in not just this hack but also in the other hacks from nqr part of what makes their hacks be distinct from other hacks and vanilla in a good way. English is not my first language either but I guess it’s different for me since I’m quite fluent in terms of reading and writing.

It’s meant to be immersive. It feels like it is Rena, years later, looking back and describing her comrades-in-arms to the best of her memory. Also the description of Kolbane is hilarious. It’s literally “We had no one else to give the banner to, so… uh…”

Of course it might be to everyone’s tastes, but I liked it a lot, personally.

Yeah it’s a language skill issue. You can skip it or treat it as a learning experience, it’s not exactly content you’re forced to view.

Have you watched Western Fantasy epics like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones? The type of language used should be familiar then. If not, this can be practice.

Hi there. I finished Route A 10 days ago and have been thinking about how to write this post. Good thing I decided the theme as early as Ch 6.

Ive already beaten DoW and HC (so this post is full of spoilers), and I know that DoF is a project with a long history, with active community participation, while Do5: DE retains the original features as many as possible. Therefore, a question naturally arises: is Do5 more like DoF (Fig. A), or DoW and HC (Fig. B)? I’ve never played the original DoF, but I found a discussion thread from ten years ago. Although most of the content has been eaten, I can still get a glimpse of what it was like back then.

You may have realized that this isn’t a serious review .

(Something seems off; I can’t see the summaries. If you can’t either, they are: Art, Mainline, Gameplay/Map, Random Thoughts, Off topic, and On behalf of others <内含中文>. There are also some strange spaces; I hope they don’t affect readability.)

Art

After pressing Start, the familiar blue frames and scrolling green background appear the artistic style of FE7. But once the game begins, it becomes clear just how much work have been put in since the hack reviva l.

Most noticeable are the portraits. Though most retain their original designs, subtle adjustments are made. I know nothing about art, so all I can tell is that the eyes in some of the portraits have been altered to make them look more grown-up. There are also some styles that are very similar to those in HC, such as Driscoll’s and Ioan’s, which is clearly a redesign by Lumi. Colors for different countries are very effective, especially Musain’s purple helps me quickly identify the characters.

And the game interface. Just like Rena’s prf, gilded. It was inherited by HC, though with a fresher style.

Like DoW and HC, Do5 is packed with classic JRPG music. (A large portion of it comes from FFT, and just think about the princesss identity… ) Perhaps because the game is relatively long, and musical styles during the story scenes are similar, it’s a bit monoton ous.

Based on the thread I’ve read about DoF, it seems that the plot in the first half stays faithful to the original story. Except for endings of two r outes.

I could say that the first arc of Do5 is very similar to the Act I of DoW, there even an escape map with FoW in both Ch 5! And I could also say that the last two arcs are similar to HC, Ch 15 is even titled that! Not to mention the other similarities in the structure of plot.

Nevertheless, Do5 does have its unique features. And I think the lord, Rena, has contributed a lot to this.

In a way, Rena seems to be a transitional form between the other two lords. Roxelana was an experienced captain and an orphan, yet she was accepted by the royal sword. Bronwyn is a young and naive princess who won the throne through war. And Rena… meets both above descriptions, a captain with not much experience, an orphan, but also a princess…

It is easy to assume that she is also in a transitional state in terms of personality, but the fact is not so. Rena could be described as ruthless. She speaks firmly, especially when facing enemies. She felt guilty about the lie, but when arguing with Varkade, she would still use her royal status to counter him. Most importantly, she is quite willing to use force to resolve issues. This is partly due to her age, but more so because of her life experiences and sharp mind. That’s why I think it was a better ending to spare Varkade: she didn’t resort to violence.

The Guideis an important part of the story and another aspect of her growth. My view on Levelleris that Rena only truly earned that name after confronting Varkades manipulation. But by then she didn’t really need that name anymore, just as she no longer needed the guide in the final scene. (See Support InformationRandom Thoughts for more nonsense .)

HC taughtme three things. The importance of WTA. The effect of support. And, understanding designe rs’ purpose.

Sadly, things weren’t going smoothly at Do5, especially the Musain arc. Maybe my unit selection was at fault. As a result, on some maps, I find it difficult to advance on the east wing. This reaches the extreme in Ch 12. When Uther called for reinforcements, I had just finished fighting Severins soldiers. It was the end of the sixth turn. So I had to fight the reinforcements, and cleared this chapter in… 19 turns. I feel I can’t meet the designer’s expectation s, haha.

However, it would be too subjective to assume that Do5 gameplay differs from DoW and HC simply because of my FE skills. What I really find unique is the style of the map itself. Many indoor maps are asymmetrical, especially Musain Arc (lol), which has a lot of details that strike me as… intricate and elaborate? Moreover, the lapis lazuli-colored floor is breath taking .

Im also glad to see that Annas room is still there. That thread from ten years ago i s still usefu l!

So, the answer to the opening question? It depends on how important each of these aspects is to you. As for me, I vote for Fig. A.

I didn’t deploy Eilene in Ch6, so recruiting Ioan became very risky. But the conversation with Lizaveta made it worthwhile. The last time I played DoW, I used Felice to recruit Sander. It feels like Ioan and Lizaveta’s conversation is a response to that scene :joy:

Ioan hadn’t been paid, no wonder Hrolf was asking for payment per chapter

In the chapter where everyone showing up, the horse archer in the bottom-left corner wont move on his own. Thats great, because I gave Ioans lance to Cyrille and forgot to buy him a new one .

Rena was captured, but she can still use the convoy. Given that this story involves elements of cultivation, I believe the convoy is actually a storage space in a nother dimension .

Severin didn’t get a chance to perform, but somehow I really like his portra i t and personality .

The hands of the queen are the han ds of healer :face_without_mouth:

As we all know, the starlight we see today originated thousands of years ago. Therefore, what astrology reveals may be history.

Rena’s queen’s costume is nice, espe cially that dreamy blue.

I had no idea of Rophon’s recruitment condition, but I just happened to use the right unit to visit t he ruins. A lucky moment!

The support conversations between Lyndra and Adal heid are c ute. Now kiss!!!

Bunny.

(Some of the following might be better suited as a reply to this month’s NQR diary, but I don’t want to b e too noisy in that thread.)

It’s said that DoW and Do5 take place in the same world, so it’s start making wild guesses based on the world map. Imagine the story taking place in Australia, Southern Europe, New Zealand, and so on. (Yeah I choose to believe that HC also takes place in this world, since th er e are also divin e dragons. )

Roxelana isn’t used to drinking. Rena seems to be the same way. And Bronwyn doesn’t seem like the type to drink (while her grandmother did). Maybe Asbjorn just needed to serve her a high -alcohol drink, rather than

To be honest, I prefer HC’s fixed support ranks. Because I just can’t remember to g roup specific uni ts together.

People believe what they want to believe. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say: they deny what they do not want to believe. Out of arrogance, Rowland refused to believe in the strength of Roxelana’s team. Asbjorn refused to believe that Bronwyns actions were of her own free will, rather than the result of Anghara and the Black Queen’s influence. As for Do5… In my view, Rena’s identity is farless important than her actions. Since she governs her country so well, people are more inclined to believe she is indeed the princess. I‘ve decided to end this part with passages from K. J. Parker’s Born in the Purple.

“There are many things I don’t approve of. Lying is one. I believe that the truth is hard and incorruptible; it’s the stone in the peach, the rock in the bed of the river. The truth is usually quite plain and unambiguous. The problem, I’ve always found, lies in recognising it when you see it, learning to distinguish between the imposter and the real thing, [deleted to avoid spoilers]. The harder you try , of course, the more you fail.

Try it for yourself. I’ll give you just the one hint. You probably already know that most of the truths you rely on are lies. Just bear in min d that most of the lies are true.”

The first time I played Do5 was the day I beat DoW for the first time.

Certainly, I’d heard of Dream of Five before, but it wasn’t until I started browsing the DoW thread that I realized it’s now complete, and from t he one who made my favorite hack!

But I’m worried about my English skills, so I saved my progr e ss after fi nishing Ch 3 and waited.

And wait.

Wait.

Actually, I have a bit of an idea about the translation that hasn’t been released yet. DoF is a true classic. In the 2010s, some teenagers played with it enthusiastically, though their English may not be very good. I even saw a post where someone declared the project dead get reposted in the Chinese community, with the person who reposted it asking about the quality of the story. All of thi s puts a lot of pressure on translators.

As for my reading experience… If I were to open a translation tool every time I came across an unfamiliar word, my reading experience would be disjointed. So I just kept reading through it, hoping I haven’t misunderstood the plot too much.

By the way, I think the trickiest part is dealing with names. In Chinese version of DoW, Rowland’s Komnene was changed to 朗基努斯 (Langinus), and Luthor’s Nibelung was changed to 玛尔斯(Mars, or Marth because it can be robbed? ) These allusions are sometimes too hard.

Just like HC, I shared the story with my classmate, Lai. She really likes some portraits, and Chinese ele ments.

In short, she likes redheads.

As for the plot… Unfortunately, Lai has a gentle disposition and dislikes conflict, so the irreconcilable conflict between Rena and Varkade in the postscript made her deeply troubled. She chose to spare Varkade, feeling hurt by his harsh words. Considering that she didnt hear the wistful map music, whether this can be regarded as a su ccess of narrative depends on Parr himself .

How did this end up being so long again? Never mind. Thanks to everyone for their hard work. Looking forward to NQR’s next project. And play Route B someday.

I personally do enjoy the Shakesperian style, even if I, English not being my native language, sometimes have difficulty following -I need to check things more frequently than usual.

But given I’ve not read literature in a lot of years even though I enjoy artful language, playing this is a way to do it ^^ And it is quite fascinating to learn about ways the English language can be used I didn’t know about!

Buuut it really does feel as if I’m watching some kind of theatrical play, people do not go around talking like that as far as I know. Thus it feels a bit unrealistic in that sense.

Just finished this hack today. Here are my thoughts!

This is one of the strongest Fire Emblem hacks I’ve played. The characters, story, art style, and gameplay all feel just different enough from a mainline entry to feel like a hack but as someone who likes hacks that try to capture the original games’ feel, I loved it. The route split feels interesting, fun, and adds replayability without sacrificing quality and once again captures the classic route splitting they do in all of the GBA entries. Weirdly enough too I was kind of a fan of the shakesperian style of descriptions for characters, classes, stats, etc.

My one criticism is the dialogue feels very bloated. I really liked the story, so much that I was not dissuaded at all, but I will admit the dialogue sequences feel extremely long or verbose at times.

Overall this may be the most fun hack I’ve played! Thank you so much to anyone and everyone who worked on it!

Also one other thing but promotion portrait changes are such a cool idea!

Oh, I know it ପ( ˘ᵕ˘ ) ੭

In Xuanhe, they have a tale where the Dragon King’s daughter, once she turns 15, will travel freely, exploring sights, treasures, or a spouse she finds to her liking…
