[FE8] [COMPLETE] FE: Dream of Five - Definitive Edition

Well i finish the hack now, i must say i was a wonderfull story, veri originally narrated from the lord perspective in firs person, the cast have always changing characters they are so cool, and the epilogue was the best i have experienced soo far of the 15 full story rom hack I’ve completed. So 10/10 super recommended

Just finished playing this hack after I saw it recommended on the FE reddit around a week ago. A fantastic experience! I’ll give a review split up into a few categories.

Story: 4.5/5
The bandit chapters at the beginning didn’t interest me too much and I felt like characters were joining your squad randomly for no good reason, but I started getting really invested in the story by the time of the route split (I picked Onduris). I especially enjoyed the moral greyness of both your protagonist and your opponents. I thought Farrell was going to be the stereotypical big bad evil guy that you had to kill, but it turned out to be much more nuanced than that. At some point I wondered whether Rena was doing the right thing, which became even more pronounced after Varkade left and his ideals (which you, the player, fought to support up to that point) became more apparent. Speaking of which…

Characters: 5/5
I don’t know if this is weird, but Varkade is my favorite character. Not because he’s a good person or I agree with his ideals, but because he plays such an integral role in the story without being clearly good or evil. He’s a guy with a lot of ambition who hates the “rot” that infested the world, and for a majority of the game, you support his cause while killing some people that legitimately deserve their demise and others who maybe didn’t. His connection to Rena from her childhood also made for a compelling relationship between them in the present day. But his ambitions were too grand, and after Rena refuses to conquer the world for him, he betrays you. I thought for sure that he would be the final boss, having consumed the Greatmother’s power and turned into some kind of beast, but I’m actually really happy that the epilogue chapter turned out the way it did. After all the bloodshed, it was a somber and quiet way for Rena and the player to get closure for everything that’s happened. (I chose to spare him.)

Rena was a good and complex protagonist. I enjoyed how she became more confident as the story progressed, growing into the role she had to play, even though she still had doubts and insecurity under the surface. I particularly liked her convos when initiating fights with bosses - she knows she has the superior hand, and will throw any bluster they send her way back in their faces.

Gameplay: 4/5
The gameplay was generally pretty vanilla, which isn’t a bad thing. The difficulty level felt appropriate, but offense was too strong, especially in later chapters where every enemy had a powerful weapon. You could kill most enemies in one round and most bosses in 1-2 rounds… but most enemies could kill your characters in 1-2 rounds too. I think it would be an improved experience if weapon mights were toned down across the board, particularly the endgame weapons with 15-20+ might (which were a dime a dozen).

Writing: 4.5/5
The writing was a strong point overall and I really enjoyed the way the story was told through Rena’s journals. The reason I dock half a point is that characters had a tendency of speaking in fragments (i.e., not full sentences). For example, instead of saying “This made me the person I am today”, they would say “Made me the person I am today”. As a result, very different characters tended to sound the same due to sharing this particular speech quirk.

Thanks for making this hack! It was a very fun game and clearly the authors put a lot of passion and effort into making it a polished experience.

By the way, is Varkade recruitable on the Musain route or was that an old design choice that was changed? I saw a picture of him as a playable character on the final map in one of the posts above.

He can’t be recruit at all in either route. Not that I know, at least.

OR CAN HE

(he can’t, gold was spreading Disinformation over the internet)

Open it in FEBuilder and reduce class growths. The named enemies are kind of pathetic so no need to touch their stats lol

Like, you shouldn’t expect a dev to compromise their vision when you can just do it yourself.

I do feel railroaded into using certain units rn though it kinda feels weird :pensive: Can’t meet doubling threshold with most of the units because of enemy scaling. Skill issue on my part probably, and also my impression of this being a problem is likely 90% because of the stall map where I charged directly into the target boss instead of doing as I was told :joy: The Sentinels and Paladins at the end were beefier than enemy units even in chapter 18 lol

I’m currently taking a break because I lost my save to chapter 19 and got winded back to chapter 17x with an unpromoted Annelise and very few resources left due to not paying attention and force closing RetroArch Android

Oh yeah, the exp formula is VERY punishing if you promote early, which I didn’t see coming…

nah you can definitely low turn chapter 17, i play it pretty fast

but yeah the exp formula is a more lenient version of fatesexp in theory (in that I coded a scaling bossexp thing into it) but there’s no internal level tracking so every promoted unit counts as 18/x (promoted enemies count as 20/x so there’s a little bit of breathing room)

it’s basically the thing that balances garath but still lets him be endgame viable if the player wants him to be lol

Yeah I cleared chapter 17 the turn the guy charged and I could have cleared it earlier if I didn’t forget to grab the chest up there earlier and didn’t run out of chest keys etc :sob:

wait there’s no chest in 17

which chapter you thinking of actually now im confused

The one where the guy charges on turn 7

i dont remember one that charges on turn 7 unless parr made it earlier and i forgot about it but are you thinking of chapter 11A where some guy does charge

it was towards the end of musain I think so probably

if anyone knows can any of u dm me about it:

not sure if it’s a bug but: i’m using vba for a filter to make it feel like i’m playing on a gba screen but should i just stick with mgba?

cause i’ve been trying to get a support rank and i’m pretty sure i’ve seen the b rank support convo twice now (arcus and lizaveta) for 2 chapters

I don’t know why that would be happening, but the Support Room is 100% unlocked from the start, so if you’ve missed a conversation, you can go back and see. Double-checking now confirms that the three supports are all inserted correctly.

VBA (as opposed to VBA-M) is very likely to cause errors just due to being archaic at this point.

yep no bugs just me being dumb sorry about all that, must’ve just been replaying a chapter or two and forgot to do the support convo when i finally finished the chapter

how do I lower the enemy strenght in FE builder? I mean in general like you said, not doing one by one

If you went to Chapter Editor, found the Difficulty setting on every map, and adjusted it from 10 (or whatever) to 400, every enemy would be 4 autolevels weaker.

More minor fixes. We may be past the point where a major fix is ever required! There’s nothing truly essential if patching is a pain in the ass for whatever reason.

1.74 Patchnotes
  • Sileth: +1 Speed, starts with Elfire on B route instead of Fire
  • Fixed issue in 10A where ‘oh no’ dialogue would play twice
  • C19 priests now turn green when Artemisia is recruited
  • Fixed more stray polytheism
  • se’Mori promoted animation no longer cuts out music on crit and correctly neighs; palettes improved; no longer weirdly indigo
