I’ve def raved about Cerulean Crescent more directly to you Rivian about some specific elements.
But in order to “celebrate” your insane dedication to polish or honoring your implementation of ideas that sound like they’re from the clinically insane here’s uh… this.
Oriana: As solid as a combination of a dancer and a magic sword flier can get, there’s little that I can say about her that hasn’t been said before. She sometimes struggle to fight with Light Brands due to her poor con though.
Reiker: Fast mount no.3, brave flavor. Along with Ellerie, he became a champion in harpoon/trident tossing contests, though he needed a bit of Strength food to make it work. Later on, he also became fond of golden spears.
Tower: Gets benched early on because he’s a 7 move unit with no mobility or extra turn ability, which is very slow by CC standards. After the team split however, he experienced a resurgence and became the team’s primary staffer, with the Xonsussy doubling his magic stat, Waste having perfect accuracy at 1 range, and Wave being able to heal everyone in 1 action for ~30HP.
Tasel: A Swiss army knife that can do EVERYTHING imaginable: tanking, moving fast, rescue dropping, staffing, disabling enemies, boosting himself with +dmg or +spd, accessing convoy, 1-rounding things both physically (chukonu, breaking point, Chuanyang) or magically (arcane bow + Monster Energy). I’m surprised you managed to pack such an amount of functions into a humble Merlinus sprite.
Overall, the chickens are pretty good high skill requirement unit, with high move, low maintenance cost and kits that scale well into lategame, while maintaining the “1 mistake and they are dead” identity that can be expected from their unassuming profile. I ended up saving a bunch of money by deploying them, so I can buy high end weapons for everyone else.
Vermillion: Chicken no.1, specializes in chewing through soft-skinned enemies. I ended up giving him the Autogrip for that +10% crit chance, which really helps in defeating medium armor enemies that cannot be defeated with 5 normal attacks.
Jolly Jo: Chicken no.2, a Monster Energy drinking, defense ignoring tank that can speedrun through the map with his 10 move and 1 round most things on enemy phase. He enjoyed a rivalry with Mince for one of the tank jobs (the other already filled by Tasel), and ultimately won as I learned to better utilize his kit while Mince is stuck with 6+2 moves and weaker affinity with Monster Energy.
As a side note, canto+ when switching from dragon to chicken works if he equips a chicken weapon afterwards then Wait, but not when he switches then immediately press Wait.
Empress: Chicken no.3, a fragile supporter that can set up kills for others, then dive in herself with Piercing/Crushing Bite monster weapons (stolen from John XVI). Overall I quite enjoyed the afterimage mechanic.
Murky: The only mounted staffer in the game, she became Ellerie’s trusted chapter pre split, and continued to perform well post split with healing and buffing staves. Dissect crit is a decent mechanic early on, but eventually she ditched it in favor of Shine tomes, Skinslice and finally the 55mt Guichen staff.
Helicent: A Gotoh refresher, how interesting. I ended up purchasing her for both Oriana and Ellerie teams, because everyone in this forum knows how good refresher is by now. Definitely worth the 8000g.
Team Ellerie
Ellerie: A harpoon/trident tossing champion who synegizes with Canto+ units, who can gather around a spot after doing their thing for her to refresh them. As her staff level is more or less insignificant compared to her refreshing ability, I gave her the 30STR/0MAG surgery so she could reach ultimate harpooning potential. Also yea, Fenyang ends up being kinda a mediocre weapon, as using that means refreshing 1 fewer unit.
John: The Bigle team mascot build, also used by the legendary warrior KrashBoomBang, is a good flier with 8 move (most of the time) that can use 1-3 range light magic and buff ally atk/def with an aura. Overall a great follower to Ellerie, though it needs Monster Energy to reach doubling threshold against faster enemies from time to time.
Ivadne: Took over Mince’s job as tank for Ellerie, after Mince left for team Oriana. A powerful tank with a lot of spells that suit her kit: On enemy phase, she can 1-shot incoming infantry with Big Boom or bulk up and 1-round 2-range enemies with Dicer/Slicer. On player phase, she can nuke with Slicer, Hailstrike, Meteor or Bolting, then immediately canto+ to be refreshed by Ellerie or to set up the next round of enemy phasing.
Calogoo: A pretty good pre promote with high mobility and high physical damage. His preferred bows are Chu-ko-nu, Brave Bow, Titan Bow, Shoota and Breaking Point. His magic proficiency is pretty pointless in comparison.
Thyme: A formerly benched that I dug up after the team split hits, because for some reason all of my pre split units went to team Oriana. I chose her because she was the only unit that can 4x enemies 4lvl higher than her with Dicer. She ended up being a decent filler unit that does fine but not spectacular, because again 7 move with no mobility skill is pretty weak by CC standard.
Nerysa: Thanks to the tome M.Bathwater and buffing staves, Nerysa does very well at powerstaffing in spite of her extremely low magic. She also got to use Guichen to kill things after Murky finished her chapters, which is funny.
Lindros: Survived the benching that claimed Mince and Pomelo, and also Tower for a while. Abducting an enemy in the back formation is a great ability, and Lindros can also follow that up by KOing a thing with his powerful fire/wind magics, or using Rescue on Gecko to have her KO 2 things.
Basil: Yes, I used both Basil and Thyme, and Basil won the post-game fight. The legendary black knight is a master of dark magic empowered wrestling, with tomes like Fortress, Waste, Rupture and the S rank Edict. I would say he’s the 2nd best tank in the game, mostly because he can’t snipe things protected by terrain like Ivadne can.
Zububai: Ends up being a glorified staffer that can sorta protect herself with Gaozhao, because say it with me, 7 move with no mobility skill is weak by CC standard. Still pretty cool in that M.Bathwater and Xonsussy can boost her staffing prowess; it’s amazing how Xonsussy can give +14mag while Chalice’s Harm only gives +10.
Wisp: Has a pretty interesting kit that seemingly nobody figured out how to use, which involves relocating to unusual places using the wisp form’s 15 move, then pop out in human form to enemy phase a bunch of things. Her A support with Ellerie is of rather little utility, as she often operates far away from the team. She ended up favoring the Umbral Sword, Lancereaver and Badou as they give her further dodge in the right conditions.
Guard: The second Gotoh of the Ellerie team, with Helicent being the first. There is nothing I can say about her that doesn’t involve her being a powerful Gotoh, other than the concept of a Soldier going super saiyan to rise above the romhack soldier condition being pretty amazing.
I am Speechless. This not only show how great a writer @Rivian is but also show how great a player and person you are to be able to analyze the stories, characters, world with such detail and depth.
If only there was a way to pin a comment in FEU I think your comment should be the first review anybody looking to play the hack should read to fall in love with the game if they still have any doubt after watching the FEE3 2024 Trailer.
It was a long analysis but every word used so eloquently that I didn’t mind spending an hour or so of my time to fully understand your Analysis of the Story.Reading your Analysis make me Remember why I fell in love with Fire Emblem Romhacking community. Because there are talented and lovely people like @Rivian that have their own vision of what a Fire Emblem Game should be Plus there are people like you @Vulgard who fully understand and appreciate that vision and it’s creator and express your admiration for that vision in such a refined manner. Bravo Sir!
Short summary: Amazing ROM hack.Would drive home from work eagerly. Look forward to playing more of it.It held my thoughts that well. Spoilers
Long Summary: Game has so many.Great things about that make it a must play that it’s hard to list them all.But I’ll try anyway.1st.The auto repair system for special weapons I genuinely hope is in the next Fire Emblem game.A smart idea that I love, and it appeals to me in particular because I’m a dragon hoarder when it comes to video games.Who greedily hold on to my strongest weapons and items and only use them when absolutely necessary.Second, I feel the need to praise how balanced the game is. I mean, for as OP as so many of these perks are, the fact that it still felt like a genuine challenge. While also making me feel strong when I was doing well is a great testament. To how airtight the gameplay is.Every character felt unique, both in gameplay and story.
On the note of story: As the game was coming to a close.I felt genuine fear because I knew conflict was inevitable. I had grown so close to these characters that I knew that there was no way everyone got away unscathed. And I still hope that I would be wrong.Ultimately.My heart was very split. On what was the right choice? Honestly, I thought everyone made correct statements Regarding her. Ellerie, our protagonist, is a dictator. A Pragmatic, Machiavellian. But in a sense, how could she be not?Everyone’s trying to take advantage of her. The people who are genuinely good people are few and far between. She expects the worst from people, and people are often the worst. And especially her back story with the Princess and. Destroyed ideals that she cared so much about. All culminating with a betrayal from a friend Yeah, I wanted revenge too, honestly.I hated the house Heron.I hated the mainland.I hated Rosette for betraying. Ellerie. It’s funny because. In a sense, my reasoning was the same as Orina.Yes, shes all those negative things that I said, but she’s also a friend. How can we can we turn on a dear friend and ally?
I’ve rambled enough. In summary This was an S tier ROM hack. Easily the funniest I’ve ever played. While having stellar gameplay and writing to back it up, the dedication that you and everyone else put into this game is incredible, and it shows. Glory to you and glory to the mainlands new chief!
Also gonna repost a funny thing I did while planning chapter 24, one of the hardest chapters in the game to 100%. This will be familiar to those of you who went to r/fe discord.
Yea I definitely spent hours drawing a plan, to optimize war crimes per turn. From what I heard, most ppl don’t aim to get everything this chapter, so it was totally worth it.
This story is incredibly hard to follow. Characters constantly bring up events, places, names, and terms it seems like I should know, but don’t. And it doesn’t feel like a non-linear, “trust the narrative, it’ll tell you what you need to know when you need to know it” kind of thing, more like it’s just skipped some cutscenes.
I’m biased because all the factions, places and relationships are in my head, but I recognise some of it can get convoluted. Early game probably has it worst.
I would say the little excerpts that pop up when you move locations between chapters often appear cryptic at first, but they give texture to the game. You’ll eventually make sense of it all, either by eventually meeting the character being quoted or by exploring whatever is being described.
Everything else comes together more naturally, I find.
Is this game Ironman friendly? Like even if things would go very poorly could I still win/have a decent time winning?
Just so I know whether to “use saves each turn” or “turn on casual mode” or I am alright playing through my mistakes, even if that means suffering huge casualties.
Losing occasional casualties is probably fine, but huge casualties might be an issue due to a party split later in the game. Could cause one side to be seriously stuffed.
