Okay, so because I’m a writer and someone expressed interest in actually seeing something I’ve written, I figured I might as well post some writing here from my book. The formatting is a little weird, because apparently FEU doesn’t believe in indentation XD
If people enjoy it and want more, I’ll post more, if not, then my apologies lol.
So here’s part one of the first chapter of The Doers.
Episode One: The Cheating Boyfriend Job
Thursday, Third Period, One Week Into the Second Semester of Junior Year
White Mountain High School, Room 231
Ms. Esenesdi’s English Literature Class
I always made sure to get to Ms. Esenesdi’s class early to claim my seat. That’s the one downside to having no assigned seats, you can’t exactly whine if someone sits where you usually do. Unless you want to embarrass yourself in front of the entire class by acting like an oversized baby.
There wasn’t really anything that special about my seat. It was in the corner of the room, second from the back, which was a good place to keep from being noticed. It was next to a power outlet in case I ever had to charge my phone or something, but I never did. It’s not like it was padded or anything though; it was the same as the rest of the uncomfortable chairs. I just liked it for some inconspicuous reason.
Okay, if I’m being honest with you, which I probably should be, the actual reason I made sure I sat in this seat had just happened to walk into the room. Anna. Anna was the most beautiful girl in our grade, at least as far as I was concerned. Her long brown hair, sparkling green eyes, and brilliant smile made her stand out amongst the rest of the rabble. Combine that with her modelesque body and her legs that seemed to go on for miles and she easily outshone all the other girls. She was smart, getting A’s in all her classes, even while taking the advanced ones; she was kind, nice to everyone, even a virtual no one like me; and everyone loved her. Plus, she had this way of rubbing her shirtsleeve between her fingers when she was nervous that I just found adorable. Alright, I know that last part sounds especially creepy, but I can’t help but notice things I see, and I kind of, sometimes, try and see her a lot. Shut up.
She made her way across the room and sat in the chair to the left of me. I did my best not to look directly at her, but still keep her in the corner of my eye. I leaned on my hand and waited for class to start. We never really talked or anything, even though we’d been classmates since elementary school. There was a borrowed pencil here, or an ‘excuse me’ there, but I could never work up the courage to say anything more.
“So you really think he’s cheating on you?” My ears perked up when Anna’s friend, Dalia, started to speak from the other side of her. “I mean, come on, Sam’s not that kinda guy.” I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Sam, her jerk boyfriend, was very much that kinda guy, but he was good at seeming all innocent when it mattered. He wasn’t your classic kind of bully, I mean he wasn’t giving kids wedgies or beating people up, but you could tell from the way he acted around his other jerk friends that he was kind of an ass. Plus, if you asked one of my friends, there’s one thing he did that makes him the devil incarnate.
“I know, you’re right,” Anna sighed. “I just get this feeling, you know? Like when he’s kissing me, he doesn’t really wanna be kissing me.” She buried her face into her palms and groaned. “What is wrong with me, Dalia? I thought he liked me.”
“Anna, honey, you’re overreacting. You don’t know he’s doing anything behind your back,” Dalia soothed. “Come on, I’m sure you’re gonna laugh about this in a week.”
Anna pulled down her shirtsleeve and started rubbing it between her thumb and forefinger. She was nervous. “You don’t get it, Dalia, you weren’t there. Yesterday, I thought I’d surprise him by going to his house, since his parents are gone until Saturday, thought we could have some alone time.”
Dalia ooooh’d conspiratorially, her eyebrows shooting up behind her bangs of varying colors. “You go girl.”
“Not like that,” Anna sighed with a roll of her eyes. “Doesn’t matter anyway. As soon as I got there, he was practically pushing me out the door.” She rested her head against the table and gripped her hair. “I’m like 99.9% certain he had some skank there.”
“But you’re not 100% certain, right?” Dalia argued.
“I wanna be!” Anna practically shouted, banging her hands against the table.
Now, I don’t know why, but something was urging me. Some supernatural force, some otherworldly being, some haunting spectre chose that moment to possess me. I opened my usually quiet mouth and spoke up “You know…” Despite having no idea what I would say next, I leaned toward the girls and barged into their conversation.
Anna picked her head up and looked at me with those gorgeous green eyes of hers, and past her, I could see Dalia glaring at me. They were both waiting for me to continue, but I was frozen. Anna narrowed her eyes, as if judging whether I was worth hearing out. “Yeah?” she asked, urging me to continue.
That single word filled me with an unfamiliar confidence. I mean, I’ve been confident before, but not confident enough to actually talk to Anna. I started to speak, the words naturally flowing from my mouth, almost without my consent. “You know, if you really want some answers, I could probably get them for you.” I leaned back in my chair and put my hands behind my head. “I’m pretty good at uncovering dirt.” My mom made me do most of the cleaning. “And I have an eye for uncovering mysteries.” I’ve never lost a game of clue. I wasn’t lying. Not technically.
“What are you, some kind of detective?” Dalia rolled her eyes, flipping her pink, blue, and brown hair back, clearly paying me no mind. However, Anna still seemed interested in what I had to say.
“Nah,” I chuckled, sitting back up. Somehow, I was able to keep my cool as my eyes met Anna’s. “I’m just a guy telling you I can help. Whatever you need, we can do.”
“We?” Dalia arched her eyebrows, laughing a little. “There are more of you?”
I crossed my arms, boldly meeting her gaze. “Of course, I’m not some shoddy, one man crew. I’ve got a team.” Okay… that might have been a lie.
For a long moment Anna and I just stared at each other, maybe she was sizing me up, but all I was doing was trying to keep this confident facade going as long as possible. I could already feel my stomach slowly beginning to fill with butterflies.
“Whatever, nerd,” Dalia scoffed, tugging Anna’s arm and pulling her attention back to her. “Like we’d even want your help.”
They went back to talking, more quietly this time, and I was left with this feeling that I was about to hurl. What on earth possessed me to do something like that? I wracked my brain for any explanation, the only logical one being that I was going insane. At least she knows I exist now. I thought to myself, trying to look on the bright side. But she thinks you’re a weird idiot person. My pessimism kicked in and knocked me into a pool of self pity.
I focused on a small speck in the top right corner of the whiteboard as I kicked myself internally for being such a doofus. I was so busy hating myself that I didn’t even notice when class started. A sheet of paper slid in front of me from my left and pulled me back to reality as Ms. Esenesdi started calling attendance.
I picked up the paper with a groan, expecting a worksheet or in-class reading. Instead, I saw a page ripped from a spiral notebook, not a frayed edge in sight. There was just one sentence written at the top in almost musical handwriting. “Can you really get me answers?” And just like that, my foolhardy confidence returned. I quickly wrote “Yes” in bold strokes under her writing and passed it back.
Anna looked down and saw my reply. She smiled up at me, causing my heart to skip a beat, or two, or seven. She started writing out a lengthy message to me, and the self pity I had been feeling a moment ago was replaced with excitement. I’m passing notes with the girl I’ve liked since middle school! Then I remembered the mountain of promises I had made without thinking, and that’s when I started getting scared.
How the hell was I supposed to find out if Sam was cheating or not? There was no way I could do it all on my own. Luckily, I had a few friends. And what’s friendship for if not to drag your buddies down with you when you’re in trouble?
